Backstory
The Bergmenin are distinct, and feared culture (within Ellador at least). They are the descendants of a group of dwarfs who upon the collapse of their Empire, instead of fleeing to the remaining holds, fled to the cold wilds. Surviving amidst the valleys and mountains by hiding onto caves and ruined settlements, the Bergmenin survived those cruel first years of Isldar dominance. They soon had to adapt to the circumstances, old customs and cultures long gone, replaced now by pragmatism, and the needs of the many. Taboos, before thought unspeakable, became necessary for basic survival, mainly magic- There crafts soon lost their focus in detail, but rather soon became focused on efficency and practicality. But above all, and what is most important, is that it was the Vola who came in to their protection, and in specific, Nyxil, who heard the cries and despair of the dwarves chased by the Isldar, who sought to end them. Their proud warriors stood and gave their lives for the rest of their people, which would be a matter sadly lost to time. Thanks to their sacrifice, however, Nyxil unleashed a powerful storm upon the lands of Ellador, which allowed all Bergmenin to be to completley disappear upon the wilds, losing their pursuers.
The following centuries forged these specific people anew- Away from all that was known, the Bergmenin were forged by the frozen wasteland of the surface- They developed speed, teamwork, and comraderie, as well as fun sense of competivity with each other. In many senses, they are as capable as the Urlan and the Isldar, but while the Urlan hunt by ferocity, and the Isldar by silence, the Bergmenin hunt with ingenuity, setting up traps that leave a target unable to escape, only for a dozen of dwarves to emerge from seemingly nowehere, butchering the target in a matter of seconds. Nothing is wasted then, as the prey consumable aspects are taken for consumption, and the rest is used for practically everything else, their crafts, armors, robes, often being made with material gathered by hunting.
Bergmenin also have fully implemented a magical aspect to their martial arts, often using trickery and deceptory illusion to guide prey or enemies to specific locations, or infiltrating and sabotaging Isldar outposts through shapeshifting. Their weapons are more oft than not enchanted, for their sudden raids and attacks. Nothing is more terrifying for an Isldar party to suddenly realize that the trees are speaking Barrudh. By that point, it is often too late, and their life expectancy is cut short by a blade to the heart. Bergmenin also often made deals with Fae, some often being conscripted for life to fight in the Anima's wars, in exchange of bountiful food to last the season, for example. Many of the magics learned are often by demonic teachers with whom the Bergmenin already have long established a seller-buyer relationship through generations of deals.
Though, albeit incredibly violent towards anything that showcases hostility, or that has showcased hostility in the past, Bergmenin are actually an incredibly social group of folk, and not truly warrior-folk, just territorial. They joke inside their cave houses, dance, entretain themselves, and each other, and fully evoke Aedan's spirit on their friends and family. Any opportunity given is an excellent one for fun, after all!
Bergmenin are referred as 'Gnoms' by Isldar, and 'Kobols' by Ailor- For it is true that many Bergmenin use Body Magic to make themselves smaller, as it gives many more spots to hide for ambushes. But the most common name is 'Red Cap', for their practice of soaking their caps with what they deem unworthy blood, so none of it may be spilled onto the ground.
Finally, there's the matter of Nyxil, who essentially, stole these dwarves from dauw. As such, the Bergmenin are often used as a proxy for the Vola's schemes- These dwarves have been made many promises and high tails, such as the fact that the other dwarves, and the Eili abandoned them to their fate, and that they only survived due to the Vola, of which only the latter is really truthful, for the Vola merely took opportunity before the others did, with Kael not allowing their prayers to reach the other gods in time. It is them, they belief, who will reclaim the holds from the monstrous dakkar, and who will expulse the Isldar from their land.
A Bergmenin King rules over a confederation of chieftan clans, often spread and hidden throughout the land, with the chieftans often being selected by vote, with the most well-liked individual being the one who leads, a position they will mantain for life... Or as long there doesn't appear a more popular individual who causes a reelection. Bergmenin King are chosen through a rather different process, for it is not hereditary. For the entirety of their ruler's life, Bergmenin chieftans concoct the most unique scheme or plot they can conceive (though any plot that causes the death of another, or more, Bergmenin is cause of immediate disqualification).
Upon the Bergmenin King's death, after the mourning is complete, all chieftans sneak onto the coasts, and present their schemes onto Nyxil, who judges them all- The chieftan who she deems the best schemer, is deemed as King, and granted a night with Nyxil- The Godborn child from this union is to serve as a Holdr of herself, and travel the land bringing change to the life of others. The Bergmenin often name these individuals as 'Princes of the Gnoms'. These Princes often lead their own 'Wild Hunts' onto the lands beyond, to alter the courses of many lives.
