"Your goal is to make your opponent yield. Whether they lose their weapon or you force them into submission in other means."
It was not the first spar between the sisters. Surrounded by sibling fist-fights in her childhood, they both managed to get the gist of the game. Still, the twins had no proper training or practice.
"Now, do what you must to take down your opponent. Begin."
Once the wooden swords and shields were thrown to the ground, Peggy picked it up, almost like it was totally foreign to her. She carefully traced the sword with her finger, flipping it over to observe its shape. She glanced to Eliza with uncertainty. With the encouragement from young Lizzy Black, she lifted the shield over her chest and stood in a ready position.
Both unsure who would begin, Peggy glanced to the Commanders, she knew she wouldn't be able to leave until they finished the spar. Peggy whisked her sword in the sky before bringing it down on Eliza's shield. Eliza would only lose her stance, she stood tall again. Eliza went to immediately hit Peggy with her shield this causing Peggy to only stumble. The back and forth of shield hitting continued until Peggy bounced off of Eliza's shield, causing her to fall right into the snow. Without a steady handle on her shield, it fell onto her shin.
"Oops- ah- sorry!"
Peggy, now with filled with embarrassment, she attempted to redeem herself.
"Don't apologise."
"Does that mean you yield?"
Peggy stood tall again, not even going to answer her sister. She would go to jab Eliza in the arm that held the shield, her left. Though this didn't do much good. Eliza frowned, returning the poke, slightly harder than the one she received.
The two tried to throw each other off, but it was difficult to fight someone with the same exact measurements and skills. No one had the upper hand.
After a continuous amount of jabbing and hitting, successfully, Peggy went to jab Eliza in her right knee, making her lose her balance and fall to one knee. While Eliza attempted to stand up, Peggy used this as an opportunity to knock the sword from her hand. The sword fell from Eliza's hand. Peggy put one foot on the sword so she could no longer reach it.
"Do you yield?"
The falling snow had started to gather on Eliza's brown hair. She fluffed out her dress and she went to sit up from the ground.
"I can't exactly not yield..."
Peggy looked to the Commanders for some sort of appreciation. She couldn't believe it herself, the thought of beating her sister at something was unimaginable to her. She would want it spread across her family, a new feeling of pride to her. It may have only been a simple spar, but the opponents made the match important.
"Good job, sister."
"And you, Pegs. I don't know what happened in those last couple minutes, the tables turned or something."
"Didn't expect me to be so tough, did you?"
"Psh, don't say it like that."
They shot each other a little grin before going to place their training swords and shields back on the rack.
