Backstory/Plothooks

• Firstborn to the noble house von Holst, Nikla had a difficult upbringing, his early years challenged by long periods of sickness and a lameness in his right leg. Though precluded from traditional practices like riding and swordplay, Nikla proved a quick study when it came to matters of history, war and rule. To prove his worthiness of his father's title, the young heir enrolled in the Lutherstadt Kriegsakademie to become an officer in the Regalian Army.
• Soon after graduating, Nikla returned to Tirgunn to wed Linn Ménard and begin his stewardship of his family's company, Holst Armaments. The newlyweds immediately dismissed the board, opting to manage the business directly, taking it through a tumultuous period of changes that restructured its focus from monolithic bombards, to the mass production of smaller artillery fit for land and sea warfare.
• In 286, Nikla was called to serve and embarked to the lush shores of the Essa Empire, commanding a unit of artillery like his forebears had a century prior. Nikla does not talk fondly of his service in the Chrysant War, except for that it taught him a great deal. He would eventually be recalled to Tirgunn in 289 following the death of his father, his men carrying on without him.
• Since inheriting the Barony of Marais, Nikla has reorganized its people to better serve Holst Arms, often recruiting entire villages to newly constructed foundries. As of late, the Baron is somewhat single-minded in the prototyping of new armaments to stay ahead of the competition, leaving much of his responsibility to Linn and their eldest daughter, Isolde.
