Preface: I know the 'Lore Submission' area was shut down, but I have had this idea sitting in my head for a week or so, and I figured if I make this well enough it may have a chance.

Race: Leleer
Pronunciation: 'Le-El-Here'
Common Nicknames: Birds, Winged Ones.

Classification: Avian
Max Age: 80
Naming Customs: >> Link <<
Languages: Valhearti ( <Val> )
Subraces: Karan, Telum, Vendict, Cheein.

Physical Characteristics
  • Physical overview: Leleer are in general rather short, barely growing to be over 4 1/2 feet tall and 90 pounds, and bear many resemblances to Birds. Their bones are hollow and they tend to be rather thin, almost appearing sickly when compared to other races. The outer side of their arms are feathered, how exactly depends on the subrace- as well as the tops of their heads. On the end of these 'wings' are their hands, which also resemble the claws of a bird more than anything. They have three long, thin fingers each tipped with sharp claw-like nails, as well as a thicker thumb, where the longest of these claws is located. It should be noted that while Leleer are incapable of flight, they can use these 'wings' to glide for a short time. Their faces tend to be very gaunt, with prominent cheekbones and pointed chins. They lack a nose, instead smelling through their nare on their beak. The beak shape also varies greatly depending on which subrace of Leleer they are. Some have hooked beaks, others long pointed beaks. Their eyes tend towards lighter and brighter shades of Green and Blue, however the Vendict have been noted to occasionally have darker variations, as well as steely gray colorations. The Leleer are often noted at having much greater eyesight than most races, though this does vary. Like the rest of their body, a Leleer's legs are thin and long, but the legs deceptively strong. Their feet, similar to their hands, more resemble those of a bird, with varying toe number, each of which ends in a long, slightly curved, claw used for gripping on to tree branches and other perches. Due to their hollow bones, Leleer are very physically weak, with the exception of their legs, and are often easily overpowered by the other stronger races.
  • Notable physical traits: The most notable medical oddity about the Leleer is their reaction to the Sanguine Curse. While Leleer are incapable to turning fully, the disease has a notable and dramatic effect on them, both physically and mentally. When bitten, a Leleer's feathers will frequently dull, losing much of their coloration and shine. Their skin will pale, and bags will develop under their eyes. On top of this, though many would say it seems impossible, they will dramatically lose weight, dropping roughly ten to fifteen pounds. Their mental health will also deteriorate rapidly, their mood worsening as they begin to suffer from depression, isolating themselves from others. The mental effects of this only last for a little under two weeks, however they may take more time to regain their lost weight and health, especially if they are incapable of reliably feeding. It is also noted that the effects seem lessened and rectify themselves quicker if there are other Leleer accompanying the affected. Leleer who suffer these effects more than twice within a four month span have been known to be driven to suicide by the mental effects, and should be kept under close watch for the duration of their ailment.
  • Gender and population diversity: Leleer do not hold any prejudices regarding male or female roles, and are in general a very Liberal people. The ratio of male to female is roughly 1:1. Roughly 13% of the population is Karan, 21% Telum, and 30% Vendict, with the remaining 36% being Cheein.
  • Life span, development, and common health issues: Leleer are not born live, instead they lay eggs- anywhere from three to five, which are fertilized and then hatch after roughly 5 months. From the time of birth up until the age of two the children are referred to as 'Hatchlings' and must be taken care of at all times by it's parents. During this time, the Hatchling will begin to learn and play, as normal children would. From three until seven they are called 'Nestlings' as they are still mostly confined to their nests. In their home land, Nestlings are often taken on visits to interact with more of their kind. During this time, being bitten by a Sanguine will always result in death. Because of this, Leleer living in Regalia often forgo these visits, insteed confining them completely to the nest, which can lead to some issues with the Nestling in terms of developed social skills.
Mental Characteristics
  • Mental overview: Leleer are a very social and happy people for the most part. They are very keen for conversation and social events. Leleer tend to be very cheery and perky, seeking to acquaint themselves with anyone and everyone. While a majority of Leleer do not take leading very well, the Vendict are the most open to taking on a leadership role, and they are all more than happy to be followers of something, as long as they agree with it.
  • Creativity and intelligence: They enjoy learning anything they can manage, through reading or talking. They are capable to keeping track of complex trains of thought, and are able to reason through normally difficult problems with ease. As such, they also make very skilled Magic users, being able to push through the Trainee and Novice levels with speed and ease. They also have extremely long attention spans, being able to sit and focus on something for hours at a time of necessary. However, they do lack somewhat in the creativity department, not coming up with many original ideas or new ways of doing things, instead simply learning how others do them.
  • Mental health, population diversity, or any notable age-related differences: When isolated from others, Leleers mental health will begin to slowly deteriorate, though not to nearly the same level as the Sanguine Curse causes them. Leleer, being a fairly Liberal people, are also very accepting of diversity, and are open to any gender identities and sexual orientations. Before contact with Humans, they did not even have a name for Homosexuality, it was just a thing, it held no significance and they felt no need to distinguish. As Leleer age, they slowly begin to settle down. Around the age of thirty they will begin to start their own families. Those who reach the age of seventy are considered 'Eldest', and are considered blessed. Eldest hold great sway over their fellows, though they very rarely actively exercise this.
History
Leleer did not keep records for a long time, instead relying on the more social tradition of oral storytelling. According to these stories, the Eleer were created by the 'Great One', who saved them from the Cataclysm and brought them to the forests of Fendarfell. There they lived for a long time until a strange power stirred the earth, and with it came the Orcs- who were fleeing the toxins of Guldar and settled there. After learning writing from the Human colonists they began to write out their stories in the hopes of spreading them further.

Other Leleer have taken this further, seeking to spread their tales in the traditional way, venturing forth from the forests to tell their tales to any who will listen. This travel lead many to Ellador, where they were often met with general hostility from the Dwarves. And so they spread further, eventually making their way to Regalia. Many chose to settle, making nests in the forests outside the city walls, however some have adapted, living in homes within the city.

Society
Leleer are a very social group, living in large groups of anywhere from one hundred to six hundred on large nest-groups in the treetops. They are a rather simple, unassuming people, and are always willing to help another in need.

Politics
  • Government Structure: Leleer have little to no form of government. The closest thing to 'leaders' in their society is the Eldest, and they rarely exercise their influence over others.
  • Social Classes: The Leleer are a very fluid society, not really having any classes to speak of.
  • Centralization: As said, almost no government.

Culture
  • Social Norms: Leleer often greet one another by touching foreheads- their equivalent of a kiss. They have also adapted, using hugs to greet others of different races.
  • Gender Roles: There are no set gender roles.
  • Cuisine: Most Leleer dine exclusively on berries, nuts, and fruits found in the forests, however the Karan also eat meats, usually fish- though they are not opposed to eating venison or any other meats.
  • Education and Technology: Leleer are primarily taught by their parents up until the age of nine, after which they begin spending more time with the Gatherers and listening to the stories the adults tell. The Leleer have an understanding of basic physics, being able to construct levers and pulleys and such, but had not expanded beyond that until visiting the outside world. They are fully capable of operating something as complex as even an airship if taught how, and could even replicate one if they had the materials and time.
  • Art and Recreation: Leleer would often draw on cleaned portions of wood or stone using charcoal. After encountering others however, they quickly learned how to use paint and ink, and their artistic abilities have only expanded from their. The one form they seem to be incapable of is sculpting, as their claws make this a very difficult task. Often times you may find several Leleer gathered around telling stories or reading aloud together.
  • Fashion: Leleer dress very simply by many races standards, preferring thin, brightly colored cloth that covers the necessaries, but is rather loose. They tend to leave their arms bare, and men and women alike are often seen wearing short dresses or skirts, as these leave their legs unhindered. They do not wear any sort of shoes.
  • Subcultures: The Karan are the only ones with any notable cultural difference- that being that they have developed crude, but functional, weaponry, attaching sharpened stone to thick rods of wood to create spears, which they use to spear fish. They also double as a cooking tool, as they simply impale several fish on one and prop it up over a fire for them to cook.

Religion
  • Most popular religion: Though not many Leleer worry about religious matters, some have adopted a form of the Elvish faith of Estel.
  • Lesser popular religions: Other Leleer follow numerous other deities, the most common of these being the Old Gods.

Economy
  • Mercantilism versus Bartering: Leleer do not have much in the way of an economy- if one needs something they need only ask and another will likely offer it to them without any need for repayment. They have been known to exchange goods for other goods on occasion as well.
  • Primary production line versus crafts: Most of what the Leleer make are done in-home, such as weaving or painting. They do not have any form of industrialization, or production lines.
  • Efficiency and unique factors: Many Leleer have become skilled at tailoring, and use their skill to produce their extremely colorful clothing. With a little training, they can easily adapt these skills to account for the thicker, larger clothing of the other races, and can produce complex and vividly colored pieces of clothing.

Combat and Warfare

The Leleer have never been to war, and are a very docile race in general, rarely seeking out conflict. However, if necessary, they can use their claws and beaks to devastating effect against an adversary. The exception to this being the Karan, who have developed makeshift spears and have easily adapted their usage to account for the heavier, higher quality iron and steel spears and polearms.

Subraces (Where applicable)

While they can not be quite classified as full subraces, as all of these types are capable of interbreeding and such, there are a few archetypes that distinguish themselves among the Leleer.

Karan: The Karans share many characteristics- both physical and mental- with Ravens. They tend to be more creative, and aggressive to those who have wronged them. They are also the only type of Leleer that eats meat- predominantly Fish, which they catch from streams using spears. Their beaks curve down slightly, coming to a point. Their skin and feathers tend to be darker as well, their feathers taking on a shiny black coloration. The feathers on their head tend to lay back and are longer than those on their arms. Those considered to be better hunters often wear a red band around their foreheads. Karan almost exclusively have black eyes. They have two toes with one in the back for gripping, and the claws on their feet tend to be longer than the others.

Telum: The Telums resemble Blue Jays in their appearance, having lighter blue and white feathers, with black feathers sporadically mixed in on their head feathers. Their beaks are thicker and duller, capable of cracking open nuts to eat. Their skin tends to be lighter than the others, and they get sunburned if out in the sun for too long. In general, it seems the Telums are also better story tellers, at least in the opinion of most listeners. They have three toes.

Vendict: The Vendicts tend to have shorter feathers, with more warm brown colors, with white speckles. The feathers on their head often flair up slightly, adding another level to their already generally sharp looking heads. Vendicts tend to speak quickers, and are more apt to fall into an accent similar to that of ones they spend time with. Thier skin is also tanner by nature, and their eyes have darker shades, sometimes even being seen in steely gray colors. Their beaks tend to be longer and straighter, and pointier as well. They have three toes with one on the back for gripping.

Cheein: The Cheeins are often slightly rounder than the others, though not by much, weighing around 90 to 105 pounds. Their feathers are shorter, however they extend further, going down the Leleer's neck and onto their shoulder blades. They tend to be very bright colors, being yellow, red, orange, darker blue, and even on a rare occasion pink. Their beaks tend to be very short and rounded. They have four toes, with slightly shorter claws than the others.

Trivia
  • The Orcish refugees originally attempted to eat the Leleer, however an unlikely alliance formed, as the Karans showed the orcs the best spots to hunt and the Orcs told them of the rest of the world- which lead to very strange and twisted expectations from the Leleer who eventually did venture out.
  • Some scholars speculated that the Leleers reaction to the Sanguine Curse was due to some resistance to demonic possession, however this theory was quickly disproven.

I know there used to be a bird species that was eventually removed, mainly I think due to them being no fun as they were kill on sight ans super aggressive, so I tried to make the Leleer something very different. There are not a lot of overly liberal societies in the Lore, and I figured a group as diverse as birds are deserved a chance to shine as their own thing. I hope you all enjoyed!

I dont roleplay much so this wont directly effect me but this is a great idea and hope to see it implemented

This is pretty well made, and pretty cool. But I'm pretty sure lore staff aren't accepting new race ideas at the moment.
I know- they closed the Lore Submission thing, but I had this spinning in my head for a while so I figured why not. At the worst its just sitting here for me to drag back if needed, at best a Staff might see it and decide to implement it in some way.
