Hello, Snowshadow here. I'm not new to minecraft, but I am new to PvP and servers. This is actually the first server I've looked into joining. I somehow found this server while looking into terraforming and worldediting. It looks pretty cool, but there is so much that I have no idea where to begin! I've done a little bit of research, but I'd still like some clarification on some of the rules.

So let me get this straight, stealing is allowed, mining holes in people's houses as entry is allowed, stealing blocks of ore is allowed, but griefing such as with TNT and flint and steel is not allowed?

Another thing I was confused about is Factions and Teams and stuff. So anyone can create a faction? Or are there set factions that you can join? Also, how can I find an uninhabited area to build? When I looked at the world map, I didn't see a whole lot of empty space.

What are the rules on speaking? Is there a lot of swearing and insulting, or is swearing not allowed? If I said something, would everyone in the world hear it like in normal minecraft, or are the plugins so that only people in a certain radius can hear me? Or is it like most MMOs, where there is a party chat, world chat, area chat, etc.

Not that I'd really want to annoy, grief, steal, or do stuff like that, I'd like to know what will get me banned and what I should look out for. I don't want to accidentally do something wrong and get kicked or something like that.

Sorry for my endless questions, but thank you for your time if you answer then!

Tnt and fire spread are disabled. If you try to blow someone up with Tnt, it will damage, but won't destroy any blocks.

Anyone can create a faction with 200s in hand. Also, there is alot of space in some of the other worlds. There is a little arrow on the right side of the screen that lets you see different worlds, if you didn't already know.

On Massive we have different types of chat, if you wanna sell something, you do to the trade chat. All of the Chats are here:
(Type out the starting letter of the list with a colon after it to enter that chat)
l: - Local (Put a ! after your sentence to make it a yell, but * after your sentence to make it a whisper.)
g: - General (Anyone can hear this and has a cooldown to when you can speak.)
t: - Trade (Used for buying, selling, and auctions. Also has a cool down.)
h: - Help (Wanna ask questions about the server? Do it here. Also has a short cooldown.)
f: - Faction (When you're in a faction only your fellow faction members will hear this.)
a: - Alliance (Speak to the allies of your faction.)
d: - Direct (You can also do /msg <player> to get into this chat. Only the person you're messaging can hear it.)

The Rules of the server are here: http://massivecraft.com/rules

Correct.

Anyone with 200 Silver can make a faction. No donation or anything is needed. This also means that you can freely join any player made factions. This opens a vast amount of ways for you.
uninhabited places are rare, go to Daendroc or Ellador (if you want to be lonely) but I would rather advise you to look for a factio to join.

Swearing is not completely forbidden, but we want people to keep it to a minimum. We have a chat plugin (like above mentioned) and you can get your help with typing the comment /c.
Yes, there is area-chat and world (general) chat. There is also a help chat for asking questions.

No problem sir. I rather enjoy someone asking a lot of question, over a person that makes things wrong because he/she didn't.

Enjoy your stay on Massivecraft.

@cookedporkchop:
Thanks for the offer, I'll think about it.

@Dworvin:
I was thinking about becoming a dwarf, I know for sure I will use axes. If I do be a dwarf I will definitely check out your faction.

@ulumulu1510
Thanks for the help!

I have more questions now that I looked through the website more.
Can you join multiple factions at once? I don't think you would be able to, but just checking.

What are the rules on buying houses in cities? From what I've learned, you can only have one market area, and one house, correct? And when buying houses, you pay monthly or weekly. This brings up questions about money and time.
Is time based on real life time? Or is there an in-game time system? What if I want to sell my house/market area, but don't want to wait a month? I didn't see any command for selling houses.
I know that there is silver and copper (or bronze?) and when using commands involving money, silver is always an integer, while the copper is a decimal. What is considered a decent amount of money? And how do you get money?

Now I have questions about factions. What are the benefits of being in a factions, and what are the obligations toward your faction? Does each faction create it's own rule set (not breaking standard rules, or course) and does each faction have it's own city/living area?

And what about owning land? Are there rules about building land near other player's structures - I know I would find it annoying if someone built a dirt hut near my house. And can you settle down anywhere uninhabited, or are there certain chunks, areas, etc. for that? Also, are there rules about placing and breaking blocks in certain areas?

Oh yeah, and while looking at the page about Regalia, I noticed there were districts for dwarves and elves. Do certain races have to live in their certain districts? Also, do I have to have a skin and building style to match my race? And if not, how do I know who is what race?

And when it comes to premium benefits, I found out that premium members can build portals and cannons. Can non-premium members still use cannons and portals?

The last is a small question - is the texture pack required? Not saying I don't want to use it, but I just want to know.

Again, another long list of questions. Big thanks to those who take the time to answer them though, it really helps me!

You can not join more than one faction at a time.

The only place you have to buy a house in is spawn, although factions could ask for money to give you a plot, not many do. Spawn plots are rented, the frequency of payments varies.

Time is not synchronised with real life time. Looking out the window might have answered that question for you.

You do not sell a house, you simply stop paying for it.

Factions prevent people outside your faction from griefing and stealing from you inside your faction's territory.

1 diamond is worth 0.3-0.6 silver. Convert your money into diamonds and you'll have a general idea of what money is worth.

For building near others, it'd be best to get their permission first, then you can't go wrong, however if they do not consent, you must claim 16 chunks away. Since you are going to be a member of a faction, though, you'll want to be building in your faction's own territory.

You do not have to be a certain race, you just have to roleplay as a certain race. You can use /race s playername to see their race.

Non premiums can USE portals, not create them. Non premiums can also fire cannons, but not load them.

The texture pack is completely optional.

@Dwarvin: Definatly worth considering, by the way, I haven't actually started playing on the server yet.

@IllogicalLeaf: Thanks for the info!

Do continents get removed/created often? I saw that Ceardia was being removed, along with everybody's structures.

My last questions are about resources. I'd imagine with so many players, resources and caves would be depleted quickly. Are resources ever renewed? In other words, would moderators/admins ever load more ores/caves/stone into the world?

It does really rarely happen that worlds get removed, but you can say a world has a lifespan of about a year and a half ( that depends on if people don't just grief it or keep it in a good shape). Ceardia as an example is a 1.0 world, so it is actually very old. New worlds get added when our story wants it or when we would be in need to spread people more.
New worlds will not appear until sharding (an imense project that melts multiple servers togheter to one, not a proxy based engine) done.

No, the Massivecraft team does never refill ores. We occasionally fix landscape or regenerate surface, but the stone layer is almost never affected.

This will probably be my last question:
How do I start?
I've never played multi-player with more then 2 people on a LAN server. I assume I might have to change my playstyle a little to deal with thieves and robbers (are they common?) Should I start by joining a faction, or cutting down trees and building a house?

First time I joined, I went into wilderness to get materials, and I was tracked down (with dynmap I assume now) and killed. I didn't have much, but I honestly had no idea what was going on.

I was still very much a noob when I joined 9thLegion. I didn't even know which world that the base was in. So I suggest joining a faction, and getting to know the Dynmap well. It will be your best friend.

The Dynamic Map will either be your best friend, or worst enemy. Use it for raiding, success. Forget to hide yourself on it....:|

My suggestion for you? Join the 9th Legion. In my opinion they are one of the most "noob friendly" factions on the server.

Thanks for the tips, I still haven't started yet, I'm still familiarizing myself with the rules a little more. What's this McMMO thing? Is this just what adds the skills and stats? Are stats per-race, and can you reset stats if you want to start new/new character in the RP?

McMMO is a plugin the server has. McMMO adds in a more 'role-play feel' with its abilities. The stats get higher as you train them more and more. For example, If you train excavation or digging to a certain point. You can find treasure from digging, like at -level- you might get diamonds, gunpowder glowstone and such. Each type of skill has its own unique abilities

stats are not per race, your stats wont re-set once you switch, however, each race has its own bonuses. For example, tigran have more powerful unarmed and elves do more bow damage.
