LIFE STORY Milena is born to Florence du Brierüst nee Lavigne, third daughter of Elaine Lavigne, and Francis du Brierüst, Baron of Marais, in Bijoux-vert-plusse-rême, the crown jewel of the Ithanian Sovereignty. Elaine takes over Milena’s raising as per Ithanian tradition. Milena spends her teenage years in the Ithanian courts, flitting from ball to orchestra to classes at the Collegiate d’Évraux campus before attending the Regalian Statesman Academy in Vixhall. She hones her skills in languages, dance, and finer arts here, and nurtures her relationship with Constanze. Constanze pens her a letter to ask her to Regalia - she comes, with her bags packed. Wide eyed and bushy-tailed, the City takes her by surprise. The years harden her and make her anew, causing her to grow and change into someone unrecognizable from before. Spoiler: Extended Backstory ❧ Born in 285 AC to Florence Lavigne, third daughter of Elaine Lavigne, and Francis du Brierüst, Baron of Marais, in Bijoux-vert-plusse-rême, the city that would come to enchant Milena. Per Ithanian tradition, Milena was whisked into the care of her grandmother, who took a few years’ break from her work as a lady-in-waiting for the Sovereign of Ithania, High Princess Germaine Josselle Requinvol Tomaise Terrois Dujajoux. Her father was doting and sweet, her mother distant and cold, and her sister warm and loving enough for the pair of them. Her childhood was happy, if a bit stilted from the unseen stresses of the Barony’s financial situation. ❧ Upon reaching the age of twelve, Elaine brought Milena to Bijoux-vert-plusse-rême again to raise her mostly there, amongst the courtiers and the flair. Milena enrolled at the Collegiate d’Évraux campus in the City, and spent her days between lessons with her grandmother, lessons at school, and enjoying the bright parks and sights of what was, in her eyes, the grandest City in the world. At the school breaks, she would go back to Marais to spend time with her family but sorely missed the excess and beauty of Bijoux-vert-plusse-rême. ❧ She was sad to leave her grandmother and the city of her birth, but went dutifully to the next step of her education in Couronne, Vixhall; the Regalian Statesman Academy in 300 AC. Here, she met Haeddi Harhold, who she was embroiled in a competitive rivalry with that lasted until late 307, and - surprising even herself - she fell in love with the wide, rolling fields and the arrayed wineries of Vixhall. ❧ After leaving Vixhall, Milena returned to Ithania to study at the Groupe d’Intervention Pratique campus, again in Bijoux-vert-plusse-rême. She reconnected with her grandmother and tightened their relationship, with letters sent back-and-forth even after she completed her schooling. During this time, the Bone Horror Crisis strikes - an anxious fear, the first of many, settling over Milena even as she diligently worked to study and push the knowledge of what was going on out of her head. ❧ Milena then receives a letter from her sister, Constanze, in the summer of 307 AC. Constanze held the Chancellory, and had given their family name great prestige and influence. She came, bushy-tailed and bright-eyed, but quickly adapted to the culture of the Holy City - something that turned her for the worse. She worked for the Imperial Times until its editor-in-chief stripped her power over a recant; then, she formed her own paper, the Rose Record. She was named Secretary of the Whip prior to the onset of the Clicker Crisis, and spent those chaotic months until December aiming to manage the government in her own way, despite her failures. ❧ The family is turbulent under her elder brother Leufred, who inherited the Dukedom once Constanze stepped down. Courtships come and go, plots are thought of but never put into action. Life settles, albeit uneasily, until the news rolls in that Leufred had died. The world comes crashing down. Milena succeeds her brother after a brief moment of tension where the Darkwalds suspended her ascension. Months later, she cannot keep up with the County as it was and signed it into House Typhonus’s care. ❧ Lowered in entirety from the noble status that she’d been born into, Milena sank into a deep depression. A hand extended from an unlikely friend blossomed into a will to go on, and after a summer’s hard work, Milena discarded her maiden name of du Brierüst, laying down the mantle of the elk and the rose, and instead became Milena, Matriarch of the Peacock House Cadieux du Lierre. ❧ She rose from titleless aristocracy to a Countess and then finally to a Grand Duchess; ruling from the seat of Castendall at first, and then the Vixhall she’d fallen so firmly in love with during the days of her schooling. But there is no time to rest on one’s laurels when there is so much work to be done - and oh, this is only the beginning, when there is a legacy to build. PROGRESSION INFORMATION Diplomacy 3. INVENTORY INFORMATION [OPTIONAL] Spoiler: Inventory Information Three Clockwork pens, engineered to click the tips in and out. One blue-inked, one black-inked, and one magenta-inked for her personal use in penning notes and scraps and signing odds and ends. A thin notebook with disc-bound pages that can be torn out and given or added and kept for her reference. The cover is a foiling of a golden rose over a black leather background. A brass flask, coated in waterproof paint and faithfully sealed. A sunset sky yawns over a green forest’s clearing, upon which an elk stands. Its wide, grand antlers are entwined with roses as it stands, carefully poised over a bramble bush. A polished pocket watch borne of a marbled white-and-crimson, etched with a personal sigil of a rose, bearing three horns and a gently drooping leaf to the left side. When the mechanism on the side is pressed, the watch opens to reveal quotes in penned handwriting. One comes from Constanze, saying, “There’s always time for another drink,” and the other, from Leufred, states, “We are the shining light of Providence, and progress sits upon our strong shoulders. Victory is not a possibility; it is a necessity.” The numbers on the face are looped handwriting from her grandmother, and the hands are elk antlers made of moonstone. A golden ring, encrusted with rubies and emeralds, bearing the sigil of the fallen House du Brierüst: a proud elk, the sun rising behind it with flowers and brambles curling along its bottom half. On the inside of the ring, a wolf and an elk tangle together, and “R+M” is inscribed. Worn on the pinky finger of her left hand. A white-gold signet ring, embedded over a cobalt face. Worn on the pinky finger of her right hand. The crest of House Cadieux stands prominent, ready to embed into ink for the official stamp of documents. Simple, as far as rings go, and especially Ithanian rings. A golden ring bearing emeralds, sapphires, moonstone, and pearls. The sigil of House Cadieux is emblazoned on its surface, assembled with such tiny stones, and has an ivy wreath fashioned around in a decorative and fashionable border. Worn on the index finger of her right hand. A golden band decorated with small diamonds set like roses. An amber stone is set as the focus, with the gold wound around it in the shape of elk’s antlers. Constanze's wedding ring from her failed marriage with Eleonore Ravenstad, given just after Amelina Peirgarten’s pre-Chancellory dinner to pursue a new flame. Milena rarely takes it off and considers it priceless. Worn on the index finger of her left hand. Siggs, held in a sigg box carved of two pieces of wood perhaps the size of her palm. When a thumb is set in a groove, the whole casing slips down to open the box and expose the siggs inside. Often stuffed with color-coded fine tabacca blends and small single-use parcels of opium. A smoking pipe; an ivory-and-gold thing carved as if it were clouds, roiling and rolling, with cutouts that illuminate every time something is lit or smoldering inside. The chamber is a bit wider, allowing more smoke to gather for harder puffs.
