I for one love MassiveCraft and its costume lore. But it hurts me to see the magic side of the Massive community is shot down due to miss uses and similar reason to have it changed. I am a die hard magic lover nerd fan and all that. I dislike the way the entire Mage part of the wiki was worded and I reworded parts of it to MY OPINION of how it should look like to calm my nerves. I would rewrite the entire thing if I could but for now I'm just going to stick with this. Again this is MY OPINION and I did this for my own satisfaction.
Becoming a Mage
Cayd De'Itos casting magic, drawn by Jayniex.
Magic, much like writing or swordsmanship, is something that needs to be learnt. It can be learnt from reading books alone, but the most effective method of learning Magic, is through a mentor. A mentor can take more than one student, and they basically teach their students "their" form of Magic. Magic has different kinds of forms, otherwise known as flows or schools. Within each of these forms, there are several different ways to interpret the form, however these will be highlighted in another chapter. Learning to become a mage can start as early as the age of 8 years old. Due to the intricate way of how Magic seeps into Aloria however, students often only start learning Magic at the age of 14, and even if they start earlier, they will not be able to cast much at all. Every person is inherently born with the ability to use Magic, but they have not achieved the inner "understanding" required to unlock the Magical potential within. The very first thing a mentor does, is teach his student how to understand the Conduit. The Conduit is the non physical entity in Aloria that connects Aloria with the void. It allows Magic into Aloria and allows mages to tap into the Void Magics, as if it were a water well. The most obvious way to start studying as a Mage, is to find a mentor. Mentors are often older (though sometimes younger) mages who are willing to pass their form on to others. Outside of Regalia, they are often hermits, living by themselves. As stated before, Magic is not very prevalent in Aloria, and most Mages are scrutinized for their ability. The non magical population despises them for dabbling into the Void Magics, and rightly so. Practising Magic comes with great risk to the user and those around him/her. A mentor is not always willing to allow a person to study under them, they often require the student to prove themselves first and be of clear mind. There is nothing more dangerous than studying Magic with a troubled mind. Mentors can only convey the knowledge of one particular form to their student, and the forum the student picks will stay with the student for the rest of their lives. It is not possible for a mage to learn different forms, as one form requires full and absolute devotion to become anywhere near useful.
Experience Classifications
The following classify how experienced a person is at magic:
· Trainee:A beginner at magic. A trainee is literally somebody who has only barely dabbled in their form.
· Novice:Somebody who has a minimal experience in magic, but typically cannot cast anything.
· Student:Typically around age 20. Students are usually able to cast spells, albeit either weaker or for shorter periods of time.
· Caster:Typically around age 30. Casters can cast spells, and are rather average at it.
· Mage:Typically around age 40. Mages are above average spell casters.
· Expert:Typically around age 50 or older. Experts live and breathe magic, and are very skilled in their form.
· Archmage:The absolute best at their form. A person cannot be an Archmage withoutspecial permission.
Chapter Summary:
· Magic must be learnt from books and/or a mentor.
· Studying can start at the age of 8, but 14 is a generally more accepted number.
· Every person can use Magic, but not until they have reached an "Understanding" of the "Void Connection" as taught by a mentor.
· Mentors aren't always willing to teach everyone what they know.
Mentors can only teach a student one form of Magic, and the student then takes on that form forever.
Casting Magic & Mages in Regalia
Some are more attuned to casting magic, such as those born with white hair and golden eyes. Art by MonMarty.
Casting Magic is done with staffs or wands, or in other they can use there hands but tend to have less control over what they cast. A Mage must always have two hands free to cast magic. It is possible to cast magic with one hand, but magic from one hand alone is often imbalanced, and does not do what the caster intends it to. Magic cannot be cast forever. Every Mage has a peak of Magic Energy commonly referred to as "Soul". A Soul can grow or become smaller, depending on the amount of training performed. "Great wizards are not born, they are trained" is very important in our understanding of the limitations of magic. Souls, much like the stamina of a fighter, must be maintained by rigorous training. As such, a Mage would not have time to spend on other forms of combat. Magic is a single devotion to follow for one's whole life. Casting the actual Magic, means using both hands to make a gesture or draw a glyph, followed by a spell. The Spell can be said in whatever tongue pleases the caster, though is often spelled in Common Tongue (English). This makes Mages slightly predictable as they announce their spell before it is actually cast, for example an Frost-Mage can say "Frost Magic, Frozen Barrier!" signalling others that he/she is about to cast an Frozen Barrier to protect him/herself. It is possible for Mages to cast without speaking out the spell, however it requires them to Magically draw the Glyphs representing their spell on their target. This doesn't have to be complex, the symbol can be really simple, such as a representation of the caster in a single hand gesture. A Mage can only cast so many spells before growing tired. A tired mage will eventually lose consciousness. The difficulty of the spell also matters. A Mage casting an Frost Butterfly will be exhausted far less than a Mage casting an Frozen-Dragon.
Chapter Summary
· Casting is done with his/her hands or an object.
· A mage should always use both hands, and one hand causes magic to be unstable or uncontrollable/unpredictable. Casting will tire a mage and eventually cause them to collapse.
· Mages cannot train other forms of combat, Magic is a life long devotion.
· Casting Magic is done by: Hand Gesture, Vocal spell, Effect. In that order.
· Mages who do not speak out their spells must draw a symbol or Glyph on their target to be able to channel the spell.
Mages in Regalia
Regalia is the largest authority left standing on Aloria, and it controls the Majority of the Human colonized continents on Aloria. As such, its laws for Magic are widespread. Mages found practising magic without the permission of the Regalian College, are criminals in the eyes of the state. They are to be arrested and branded as Mages with a collar. This collar allows them to be identified by the people, but it also signifies that they pose no threat to the Regalian population for bestowing such a collar requires the wearer to pass the tests of the College. The College will usually enforce upon Mages that they may not cast magic in public unless safety of the people calls them to do so. It also makes sure that the Mages are stable enough mentally to handle magic, as unstable wizards are executed for public safety. Mages do exist as free Mages outside Regalia however, most notably among Elves.
The main weakness of Mages is Lapis Lazuli. The essence of this material interferes with the Void connection Mages have, which lowers or sometimes even completely disables their magic casting. In the Regalian College, many walls are coated in Lapis and tools used by the Azule Order (in charge of tracking down free mages and arresting them) are made of the material to help them fight Mages. Whenever a mage is near too much Lapis, their magic states weaken.
Mages can however also become stronger, particularly in Seraph Ruins. A yet unknown material or force causes the Magic cast by Mages to enhance in Seraph ruins. These areas are called Conduits, and Mages can usually sense whenever they are in, or near one. In very rare cases Mages can also carry conduits, smaller objects that enhance Magic. One such object is either a Demon Shard or a Seraph Codex. Only one Demon Shard and three Seraph Codexes are currently in known existence, all of them hidden to public knowledge.
Chapter Summary
· Regalia confines and imprisons mages to enforce to their anti Magic law, after which they are collared and released.
· Free Mages yet exist in small Elven enclaves
· Lapis Lazuli weakens Mages as it interferes with their connection to the Void.
· Mages power can be enhanced by certain locations or Artefacts.
Forms of Magic
Aloria knows several forms of publicly available forms of magic, as well as some hidden forms of magic that are more difficult to acquire.
Pyromancy (Fire Magic)
Pyromancy is one of the primal forces of magic where the caster may call forth fires from their body like the dragons in the days of old Pyromancy knows two specializations, the burning Dragon's Fire and the cold touched Cold Fire. Both forms can be learned by any race. Pyromancy is one of the most popular forms of magic in Aloria. Pyromancy is also one of the easiest forms of magic to us, for because the flames are unpredictable and there for Pyromancy is used for destruction due to the ease of use with one hand, many use Pyromancy for a quick "throw" type of attack/wepon. Pyromancers dont tend to use staffs or wands The form of magic is popular among Qadir mages and worshipers of sand cults. It is by far also the easiest to acquire form of magic. Charlatans and book salesmen often have at least one manual book on learning Pyromancy.
· Dragon's Fireis by far the most popular form of magic in existence. The form of magic is relatively easy to learn, and is really straightforward. Dragon's fire has the caster cast fire from their hands, expending magical power to ignite air at will. Dragon's Fire is mainly an offensively aimed form of magic, resulting from the idea that most mages use it to fire fireballs at their foes or burn what they wish to destroy. The magical form can however also be used defensively. A Dragon's Fire mage could cast a wall of fire in front of him to dissuade an enemy sword fighter from getting close enough to strike at them. Dragon's Fire has a very quick learning curve, meaning even the lowest mages of Dragon's mage can cast fireballs and fire walls. Higher mages of this form of magic distinguish themselves with being able to cast faster, larger and hotter fires. A novice can cast a simple fireball to set ablaze or cause burn wounds, yet an Expert Mage can cast a firestorm hot enough to melt iron.
· Cold Fireis a much rarer form of magic. The form is relatively difficult to learn for mages because it relies on out of body control of extensions of one's form. Cold fire allows the user to wield blue fire that does not burn to the touch, as if it were a whip or coil. Cold fire will never take on a physical form, so it cannot create, for example, a sword. It can however take hold of an object by wrapping around it. Cold Fire is popular among certain Qadir desert nomads and sand cults. This form of magic is relatively difficult to discover as the knowledge of this form is closely guarded by Qadir tribes. A novice is able to cast a relatively useful Cold Fire whip, while an Expert Mage could wrap themselves in Cold Fire to appear like a giant fire salamander.
Water Magic
One of the many forms of elemantal magic Water Casting is one of the primal forces of magic where the caster condenses the water in the air, or uses the water around them, and sometimes even in themselves for their purposes. Water Casting knows three forms of magic, the water spouting Aqueous Flow, the body form Water Essence, and the last form, Bodily Water. Water Casting is popular among Maiar, and often in fact the only magical form used by Maiar. Despite its heavy popularity among Maiar however, several Elven tribes use it as well, thus making it fairly accessible to any race.
· Aqueous Flowis the most seen form of water magic, allowing he caster to use water around them, from like a river, or condensed water from the air for different purposes. Aqueous Flow is an almost entirely defensive form of magic, utilizing water to push enemies away from the caster. It can however be used offensively by forcefully drowning an enemy by constantly spouting water into their face. Novice water mages will be able to cast simple water spouts, often from a bag of water they carry. Expert Mages however can summon large whirlpools of water and cause small local tsunami's.
· Water Essenceis a fairly rare form of Water magic that is usually reserved for Maiar mages. It allows the caster to form their body, or parts of their body, into a liquid. While in this liquid state, the caster is able to feel and hear but not see due to the lack of eyes. The body water form can also defy gravity and "flow" upstream, trough other liquids, trough holes and many other things. This form of magic is often used purely defensively as it allows the caster to become immune to physical damage, however it can also be used to drown enemies, or damage enemies from within by invading their body as the liquid. Novice mages can only turn part of their body into water, though Expert Mages can change their form into a liquid almost instantly, and remain in this form for extended periods of time before reforming.
· Bodily Wateris an extremely rare form of magic that is barely used anymore, save for a small coven of Vampires. Bodily water uses the water inside the body of creatures to control their movement. A Bodily Water mage will essentially halt or move the water inside the bodies of the creatures cast upon in directions it wants, instead of the host. The host may resist, and sometimes succeed to outdo the magical energy, but usually the Vampire coven uses it to paralyze their victims. A novice Bodily Water mage can affect the vision or mute a target by closing their mouth, while an Expert Mage can control a whole body like a puppet, even as far as lifting it off the ground several feet. Bodily Water is not an offensive or defensive form of magic, it is just used as a utility form of magic.
Frost Magic (Ice Magic)
Frost magic is one of the primal forces of magic where the caster super freezes anything they touch, controls Ice shards, and in some rare cases, even the air around them. Ice magic is not particularly popular on Aloria, and therefore may be difficult to learn. Contrary to popular beliefs, Ice Mages are more prevalent in the deserts of Farahdeen more than anywhere on Aloria. Ice magic knows two forms, the freezing Solid Frost and Ice controlled Frozen Shard.
· Solid Frostis a more prevalent form of Ice Magic used by Qadir shamans to create oases in the desert. Solid Frost allows the caster to super freeze anything they touch, often over larger areas, thus pushing down the temperature severely, and in extreme cases, even turn things solid like bodies of liquid. Solid Frost is difficult to learn due to its relative rareness. Novice mages may freeze simple things like a glass of water, while Expert Mages can hyper freeze the air around them, making it impossible to breathe for their foes as the air would freeze their lungs. Solid Frost is not an offensive or a defensive form of magic. It is just used as a utility form of magic.
· Frozen Shardis a rarer form of Ice Magic used by Tundra nomads and hermits in cold mountains. It allows the caster to influence Ice, often to shatter solid ice and then use the shards as projectiles to hurt enemies. The form of magic can also be used defensively by forming an ice shield in front of the caster, or encasing the very caster in ice while not killing them. Frozen Shard is a fairly impractical form of magic, as it fully relies on Ice already being present. Frozen Shard Mages cannot make Ice where none exists. Frozen Shard is difficult to learn due to the strange nature of affecting objects beyond the caster's body.
Lightning Magic
A very concentrated form of Pyromancy, Lightning magic is one of the primal forces of magic where the caster can redirect lightning, or in some cases, even cast forth lighting storms. Lightning Magic is relatively rare, isolated mostly to academics at the Regalian Academy. Lightning Magic knows two forms of Magic, Lightning Shock for directing lightning and Static Field to create Static charge. This form of magic requirs the caster to use a staff or in some cases a wand, if the caster were to attempt casting Lighting with his/her hands, the casting will in anycase back fire due to how unstable Lightning Magic is.
· Lightning Shockis a really straightforward form of magic. It allows the caster to cast weak jolts of lightning from their body at targets they intend. Intend, because lightning behaves oddly and will attempt to flow into whatever conducts it better. If a Lightning mage, for example, shoots a jolt at a farmer standing next to a knight in armor, the knight will get struck instead. Lighting Shock Mages may also redirect stronger bolts of lightning, like a thunder strike in a thunder storm. This is very taxing and dangerous to the mages however, as the lightning passes through them first before being redirected. Lightning Shock is a purely offensive form of magic; there is no defensive manner to use this form of magic. The Lightning Shock can only be learnt at the Regalian Academy in the closed section. Novices may direct small charges, while Expert Mages can redirect large lightning strikes.
· Static Fieldallows the caster to cast static fields around objects or themselves. The Static fields are visible and appear as a small blanket of lightning covering something. Anything touching a Static field will receive a shock, often enough to knock people unconscious. Novice Static Field mages can cause static power to give people a bad hair day, while an Expert Mage may cast static power into the clouds, thus summoning a violent lightning storm. Static field is an almost non existent form of magic, though rumors are some Orc shamans know this form of magic as they use it to keep ships away from their islands.
Earth Magic
Another form of Elemental Magic, Earth Casting allows the casters to make use of the very substance they stand on. It allows them to control solid stone, gravel and rocks for several purposes. Earth Casting is a fairly popular form of magic among Dwarf mages. It knows two forms, the Stone Body form and the Hurling Rock form.
· Stone Bodyis a simple form of magic that allows the caster to augment their body with a layer of rock, protecting them from physical harm. It is both an offensive as well as a defensive form of magic because it allows the caster to not only protect themselves, but it also enhances the damage they deal with their fists due to the rocks covering their hands. A novice in this form of magic will know how to encase their fists, while an Expert Mage can cover their entire body and even enlarge their form to the size of an Ogre. This form is almost common knowledge among Dwarves; many Dwarven families have at least one tome describing how to harness this power.
· Hurling Rockis also a simple form of magic that allows the caster to use loose rocks and stones on the floor as projectiles. It is a fairly offensive form of magic, as hurling stones can be used to harm people, but it can also be used defensively by holding a rock in front of the caster as a shield. Novices may control pebbles, though Expert Mages can hurl house sized rocks.
Holy Magic (Light Magic)
Holy Magic is a very popular form of magic just after Pyromancy. It allows the casters to use the positive affects of pure light and magical light. The most popular form of light healing, is healing light. It is popularly used in healing houses as well as on the battlefield for quick fix-ups. Other forms are Blinding Light, and Holy Barrier. Holy Magic is the easiest form of magic to learn. It is the only form of magic that is publicly available in normal public libraries.
· Healing Lightis a simple form of magic where Healing Mages use the Magical essence of light magic to heal wounds. This form of magic requires the mage to "get down and dirty," which often involves poking their fingers into wounds and twisting them around to secure the healing. Healing Light is not as practical as surgery, as it requires the mage to touch the wound to sear it shut. It is also not painless, as the subject can feel their flesh re-mending. Novices can patch up simple things like cuts and bruises, yet Expert Mages can heal up large wounds, broken bones and arrow wounds.
· Blinding Lightis a really simple form of magic. It has the caster super charge light in their hand to blind their enemies. Novices may cause a simple flash, while Expert Mages can cast a sustained flare and even throw it into the air to light up an entire area. This light form is easy to learn as much knowledge is available for it.
· Holy Barrieis also an easy form of magic, allowing the caster to harden pure light essence into a shape of a shield to protect themselves or others. The shield is slightly see through and will block objectives and physical attacks but no magical attacks, and it will break if too much damage is sustained. Novices may cast simple arm shields, while Expert Mages can cast a shield large enough to house multiple people.
Black Magic (Shadow Magic)
A form of Magic from the Dark Arts, Black Magic is a popular form of magic among rogues and thieves. It allows the caster to physically enter the void dimension. Novices may do simple things like hide themselves in the void, where as Expert Mages can suck entire rooms into the void Temporarily, Black Magic is the most dangerous form of magic. As soon as a Dark Mage first ventures into the Void, a void Apparition latches onto their soul and will continuously try to pull their soul into the void from their shadows for the rest of their lives, hence why the nick name Shadow Magic. Dark Mages will have interactions with these Apparitions in their dreams, in their dark shadows cast at night, and from the corner of their eyes. It will continue to try and drive them insane until they flee into the Void, after which the Apparition will try to trap them there and consume their soul. Black Magic only has one form.
· Shadow Meldis the form of Magic that allows the caster to meld into the Void temporarily to re-emerge from shadows elsewhere at their pleasing. Travelling in the void dimension does not cause them to travel any faster than swimming would, and most Shadow Mages cannot survive long in the Void.
Strings Magic
Strings Magic allows the user to animate inanimate objects. The objects have to be movable however, a Strings Mage cannot animate a rock or tree. Items favored by Strings Mages are sets of Armour, mannequins, puppets and such. Strings Magic only knows one specialization, Puppet Magic. The explanation is the same as the basic abilities of Strings. Strings Magic only works on non-living things, which in theory can mean corpses as well, but not animate beings. Strings magic is very popular among circus performers. A novice may move simple things like door handles, while an Expert Mage can move an entire set of armor by himself.
· Puppet Magic:The ability to animate an inanimate object, as long as they are movable.
Hex Magic
Hex Magic allows the user to trick the minds of others to make them believe things that are not real. Hex Magic has an unknown amount of specializations, many of them have been lost to time (that does not mean you get a carte Blanche to invent your own form) There are a few known forms however. The first form is Charming Hex. This form is used by mages tricking others to believe they are in love with them, asking them to do for them whatever they want. The second form is Twisting Hex. It allows the Mage to disguise a person or object into something else, making others believe it is not what it actually is. The next form is Nightmare Hex. This is the rarest form of Hex publicly seen, where the caster changes the view of their target into a demonic nightmare version. Any and all Hex forms require the Hex Mage to be in viewing range of the Item or Person they are influencing. Breaking the line of sight will cancel the effect. Hex magic is very popular among spies, charlatans and street artists. As such, it is relatively easy to learn Hex Magic on the street. Most novices can do simple things like hexing a butterfly to have a different color, though Expert Mages can hex people to look completely different or change the color of whole streets.
· Charming Hex:The ability to hex someone into believing they are in love with you.
· Nightmare Hex:The ability to hex someone into thinking their worst nightmares are around them.
· Twisting Hex:The ability to hex something to change its appearance or touch.
Lyre Magic
Lyre Magic is the art of casting spells with a Lyre or Harp. This Magical form is unique in the way that is must require an instrument to be cast. Lyre Magic knows two specializations. Hymn Lyre being the first one, allows the caster to play notes on their instrument to weaken targets. Targets will become drowsy, heavy and weak. The second form is Perseverance Lyre, the caster fortifying the defenses of others. Their targets will feel additional strength and are able to take more hits than usual. Lyre casters are also unique in a way that they are unable to cast their magic on themselves. Lyre Magic is often taught by bards and is the only non illegal form of Magic in the Regalian Empire, as it is hard to say whether it is the magic behind the Lyre, or the skill of the artists, that causes an uplifting mood.
· Hymn Lyreis the form of using instruments or voice to weaken opponents.
Perseverance Lyreis the form of using instruments or voice to bolster and strengthen allies.
Blood MagicBlood Magic is a form of the Dark Arts which doesn't require years of study, but years of worship to the realms of the unknown. Blood Mages cant cast anything with Blood magic nor control anything, but place a curse on another. Blood Mages use Ritual Tables to perform blood sacrifices to please the demons of the void to draw curses upon others. Blood Magic is a dangerous commitment and failure to please the demons you feed will result in your own blood in place of the blood you owe. Blood Mages require a Gold Blade doused in pig blood in place of a Wand or Staff used by many other Mages all across Regalia. Blood Mages use Lapis Lazuli in there Rituals to break any type of defensive magic preventing the Ritual from continuing. The only weak point in Blood Magic is the amount of time required for one Ritual. Rituals can take from a week to several years depending on the curse attempting to be drawn. To perform these Blood Rituals Blood Mages must have a Ritual Table set up like the image below. Minimal items required are "8 Lapis Lazuli Blocks, 12 Redstone Blocks, 8 Redstone(Wire), 1 Enchanting Table" (Redstone(Wire) must be surrounding Enchanting Table)
(Other Magic Arts that should be Implemented into Massive)Necromancy (Necromancers)
"Summons the dead to do thy deeds"
Void Magic (Void Casters)
"Cast voids to call out minions or to pull in others to another realm"
