    || Life Story

    • Marco-Luis Verdugo was born to Valentina Verdugo, a single mother who worked as a tanner in the lower slums of Daendroque. Marco had never met his father, and the stories he got from his mother rarely painted a good picture.
    • Without a father figure, and with a mother who was far too busy putting food on the table to attend to Marco’s behavior, Marco grew up unchecked and unsupervised.
    • Being in the lower slums, Marco often ran with free Varran and other slum Ailor children in small packs, causing mischief among the street vendors and outdoor markets.
    • This is where Marco first began what would inevitably be a twenty-year streak of conning and theft, often playing as a distraction for his friends to snatch what food, clothes, or other valuables they could find in the stalls.
    • For a while, what guards were about turned a blind-eye to what was perceived as a group of kids causing trouble, but this wasn’t to last.
    • As Marco matured into his teenage years, his spree of petty-crimes became more and more common. From conning foriegn merchants into lending him money, to pickpocketing guards and soldiers alike. The more ill-gotten wealth the Ailor received, the more reckless he became with it.
    • Marco had picked up a pension for gambling. Cards, dice, roulettes, even wayward bets with strangers on the street. To him, the thrill of gambling was unlike anything else. While he was content in leaving it up to luck most of the time, a series of unfortunate bets led him to changing his outlook.
    • From his time on the streets, Marco had been quick with his hands. Whether it be in the occasional knife-scrap, or pickpocketing, Marco found it almost supernaturally easy to perform sleight of hand techniques. This led to him fixing decks that he gambled with, or setting up events in a way where he’d land himself on top.
    • One particular guardsman had found out, after a game of cards. Needless to say, he wasn’t pleased. After arresting Marco, this led to a long trend of him being in a cell every other week for some new petty offense.
    • Desperation and frustration in his common imprisonment, but unwilling to give up a life that had proved profitable this far led to him turning towards more sinister means of survival.
    • After having a large portion of his ill-gotten goods and coin confiscated, Marco had turned the rest of his savings towards an opium and alcohol binge. Days on end, he found himself in worn out taverns with no company.
    • On one particular night, a woman had been conversing with him over a drink. Unknown to Marco at the time, this particular drink had been spiked with Sanguine blood. A void-riddled cocktail that would bring him out of his stoop.
    • After the initial sickness, Marco came out reborn. With his confidence not only returned, but tripled, he found himself travelling all over Daendroque in elaborate scams and gambling.
    • Finally, he had gathered enough debt from almost every major city, and found it impossible to travel anywhere within the nation without being hounded for his fees. Seeing no opportunities left in his homeland, he made a voyage to Regalia, where a new life awaits him.
