Hearty Drinker: A heavy drinker, Kailu often uses alcohol as a means of numbing his inner turmoil. His tolerance for drink is high, allowing him to handle even the strongest of spirits. Backstory
Kailu Pastina was born as an Ailor, hailing from an upper-middle-class family in Regalia. The Pastina family was proud, always striving to appear more prestigious than their actual station. Kailu's parents raised him and his twin brother, Kit, to reflect that ambition—demanding that they carry themselves with poise, dignity, and refinement. From an early age, the twins were groomed to present themselves as members of the nobility, despite their family's more modest status. Kailu, however, never fully embraced this life of elegance and polish.

Where his family prized decorum and status, Kailu longed for something more tangible—adventure, freedom, and the open wilds beyond Regalia's gilded walls. While Kailu could never quite fit into the sophisticated world his parents expected of him, Kit thrived in it, at least on the surface. The twins were inseparable, sharing a bond that went beyond the expectations of their family. Kit, while outwardly conforming to their parents' wishes, shared Kailu's desire for adventure and a rugged life, free from the societal obligations that weighed them down.

As soon as they were old enough, Kailu and Kit left their family behind, eager to carve their own path through the world. Together, they roamed the far reaches of the Empire and beyond, traveling to distant lands, exploring ruins, and facing dangers most Regalians only heard about in legends. Their adventurous spirits brought them closer than ever, making them partners in every sense of the word. They were two sides of the same coin—Kailu, impulsive and wild at heart, always ready for the next thrill, and Kit, the steady hand, with an eye for planning and caution, balancing his brother's recklessness with careful strategy.

For years, the Pastina twins earned a reputation as skilled explorers and adventurers, venturing into ancient ruins, dense forests, and treacherous mountain passes. They survived harsh environments, strange creatures, and powerful magical forces. Their bond seemed unbreakable, but as time passed, the cracks began to show. Kit wanted more recognition, more stability—a way to cement their legacy, while Kailu sought nothing but the thrill of the next challenge, the next unexplored frontier. Their shared journey began to diverge, as disagreements over what path to take became more frequent.

Despite their growing differences, the twins continued adventuring together, until one fateful expedition changed their lives forever.

The brothers had heard rumors of an ancient, forgotten city buried deep in the wilderness—isolated and dangerous, yet full of untold treasures and lost knowledge. Kailu was eager to explore it, pushing Kit to accompany him on what would be their greatest discovery yet. Kit, though hesitant, agreed. They set out, their bond strained but not yet broken. As they delved into the heart of the city, the atmosphere turned eerie, with an oppressive, ancient magic lingering in the air.

Unbeknownst to the twins, they had entered the territory of the Oorl Worms—dangerous symbiotic creatures. The twins had no idea what lurked in the shadows of the ruins. As they split up to cover more ground, Kailu stumbled upon an Oorl Worm nest. Instinctively, the worm perceived Kailu as a good host and attacked. Before Kailu could react, the creature burrowed into his body, piercing through his chest in a horrifying and agonizing process. The worm fused with his heart, and Kailu was transformed into an Urlan—a beastly, horned creature driven by primal instincts and wild urges.

The symbiosis was violent and chaotic, sending Kailu into a blind, animalistic rage. The Oorl Worm's instincts consumed him, overriding his mind with savage desires. In the confusion, Kailu lost all control of himself. The gentle, adventurous Ailor that he had once been was drowned in the bloodlust of the Urlan. Desperate to escape the torment of the transformation, Kailu roamed the ruins in a fury, destroying everything in his path.

Eventually, his rage brought him face-to-face with Kit. Kit had no idea what had become of his brother and was horrified to see the monstrous figure before him. In his blind rage, Kailu attacked without hesitation. The battle was swift and brutal, ending with Kailu delivering a fatal blow to his twin. As the primal urges began to subside, the realization of what he had done came crashing down on him like a tidal wave. The body before him, broken and lifeless, was his own flesh and blood—his brother, his best friend, his other half. Kit was gone, and it was Kailu's hands, transformed by the Oorl Worm, that had taken his life.

Devastated, Kailu buried Kit in a makeshift grave among the ruins of the ancient city. Kneeling before the unmarked mound of earth, he swore to himself that he would never allow the beast inside him to take control again. The guilt of what he had done weighed heavily on his soul, and from that day forward, Kailu was a man consumed by grief and self-loathing. His twin, the one person who had understood him, was gone forever, and there would be no forgiveness or redemption for the crime he had committed.

After Kit's death, Kailu wandered aimlessly through the wilds, no longer the adventurous spirit he once was. The thrill of exploration had turned to ash in his mouth. Now, he traveled only to escape his past, but the memories of his brother followed him wherever he went. His new form as an Urlan made him a stranger to himself, a creature torn between the primal instincts of the Oorl Worm and the fading remnants of his Ailor identity. The call of the wild, the need to hunt, and the violent urges of the Urlan were a constant battle, one that Kailu feared he would lose.

Eventually, his wanderings brought him back to Regalia, the city of his birth. But this was no homecoming. Regalia was full of ghosts—memories of his family, of a life he could never return to. Kailu's purpose in Regalia was simple: he wanted to make sure his family was safe. He couldn't allow them to discover what he had become or what he had done. His presence in the city was secretive, a silent guardian watching from the shadows. He would never speak to them, never let them know the truth of what had happened to their son and brother.

At the same time, Kailu knew that the primal instincts of the Urlan would never truly leave him. The Oorl Worm had become a part of him, and he would always struggle with the beast inside. Now working as a tavern hand in the Golden Willow, Kailu keeps his distance from others, yet the haunting memories of his brother and the fractured pieces of his former self are never far from his mind. His life is one of quiet turmoil, as he tries to balance the man he once was with the monster he has become.

Plothooks
The Ghost of Kit: Kailu's guilt over killing Kit is a constant shadow over his life. This guilt could manifest in strange ways—perhaps hallucinations or dreams of his twin haunt him, driving him to seek some form of closure. Patrons or adventurers might catch Kailu muttering to himself or notice how distant he becomes at the mention of brothers or family, piquing their curiosity.

The Watchful Protector: Kailu's desire to ensure his family's safety is strong, but his need to remain hidden from them is even stronger. This could lead to dangerous encounters as Kailu secretly watches over them from the shadows. If someone threatens his family, Kailu might be forced to reveal himself, creating tension as he grapples with the potential consequences of being discovered.

Redemption through Others: Despite his inner turmoil, Kailu's compassionate nature still lingers beneath the surface. He may seek out others who are similarly lost or struggling with their own inner demons, becoming an unlikely mentor or guide. This could lead to deep friendships or conflicts with those who are curious about the mystery of Kailu's past.

The Hunt and the Beast: As an Urlan, Kailu has an undeniable instinct to hunt. This could lead him into dangerous territory, where he must balance his humanity with the beastly urges that drive him. Kailu might be approached by other adventurers for his hunting skills, leading to potential internal conflict as he tries to suppress his more violent tendencies.
