The clan he was born to, the Cuffberts, were a classical depiction of the typical Aldruinian dwarves. Hair the colour of blood and fire coated their heads and draped down to their knees, and they were well-respected for their contributions to the wartime weaponsmithing fervor of the Dwarves during the breaking of the Great Fiery Peace and the reignition of the war with the Dakkar. In his adolescence, he saw dwarves of all shapes and colours seek refuge in Aldruin from the disasters that befell their people. He spent his childhood playing tag in the midst of the long lines of Stout Folk refugees that stretched into the outer customs tunnels as far as the eye could see, their eyes shrouded by hoods and caps drawn low over their thick brows, everything they have wrapped in flimsy bindles and carried on their shoulders. His father, Hroarr, was a carpenter who was dead-set on his work, so he spent most of his time at home hunched over cutting boards at his mother's side. His mother, Sigrun, was a far brighter character, taking more after his cousins Bronwyn and Folcard than anyone else in the family, which was fascinating to Joff, considering she had married in. All the time in the kitchen though, took its toll on Joff early. Like all dwarves, he packed on weight quickly, and soon enough he had reached a prodigious weight, so round as to require custom-tailoring on all his clothing. In a time of great famine amongst the dwarves, his weight was a badge of shame and favoritism from his mother and so soon enough, he wasn't included in any of the tunnel-running games with the other children. Joff took that rejection rather hard, and withdrew from the work expected from him. His mother tried everything to pull Joff out of his mental rut, from teaching him singing to a pair of equally short-lived apprenticeships with an alchemist and a carpenter friend of his father's. This conflict came to a head when Joff's mother inadvertently mentioned that she was actually a Dredger by birth, and she had simply settled down with Joff's father when they had met on a trading expedition. Joff was appalled, not only was his mother not a Ruin-Khuur, he felt as though she had outright deceived him for all the years that they had been together. That night, Joff strapped his belongings into a bindle like the refugees he had seen, hefted it onto his shoulder, lumbered out the window, and started walking down one of the thousand warren-tunnels that dotted the walls of the Hold. [ Adolescence ] After days of wandering the outer warrens (and having exhausted his meager pack of mushroom-biscuit provisions), Joff happened across a curious scene. Instead of the usual carved-stone streets with slits carved in the ceiling to let in air, Joff saw a fascinating scene: An open-air auditorium, and an assortment of oddly-proportioned dwarves prancing around in curious costumes, shouting in strange tongues. It was a theatre recital, populated by a group of Aldor who travelled through the warrens, offering shows to the poor and disenfranchised members of Dwarvish society as a matter of civic duty. Their leader was a tall half-dwarf who went by the stage name Fisterlig the Fantastic. Joff fell in with the troupe, and when they journeyed away from Aldruin to the coast on some mysterious errand, Joff was more than happy to come along. He was utterly in love with the theatre, and he acted as a chef for the troupe at the young age of sixteen, crafting meals out of foraged mushrooms and lichen. For a year they travelled through the tunnels while Fisterlig taught him every trick of the stage he knew over the firelight, and soon enough, Joff was a practicing member of the troupe in addition to their chef. He learned to speak d'Ithanie by his mentor's hand, and by the time they arrived at the coast, Joff carried himself with all the pomp and bravado that can be managed by an overweight seventeen year old dwarf. But what lay before him, standing like a monument to just how much metal can be wrenched out of the ground, was something he hadn't ever anticipated. Instead of a ship waiting to take him to the far off lands of Vixhall or Ithania, something far more grim bore its coal-stained teeth at him on that coastline-- A Dredgefleet ship, a hulking city of metal, belching smoke into the sky like some great metal dragon. A huge pitted iron plaque upon its side read "Vostvjakr - 81 AUF." Joff had to be dragged onto that boat, but before long, it too became his home, even if it was a dreary one. Preforming in soot coated halls became routine, and he travelled with the ship up and down the coasts of Ellador. He even grew to love the rocking of the sea and the howling of the rowdy crew after their performances. Eventually though, the wanderlust felt by all Dredgers took hold of him, and with the blessing of the Captain of the Vostvjakr, he took a small retrofitted boat and sailed off to greener pastures, to explore a whole new world of food, tastes, theatre and wonder.
