Hello everyone,

I'm sure that you, just like many others, are growing increasingly annoyed with the disappearing item issue.
Therefore, I have a proposal on what we can do to start hunting it down faster.

My proposal is to have a plugin monitor inventory activity, keeping snapshots every 1 to 5 minutes or so, and then keeping track of item changes from that point. After each minute or so, it would create a new snapshot and start another log from there while the old one can be deleted. However, if you should notice that something happened, you would run a command which flags your current session to be saved for review. This could also allow for a comparison between the history of your inventory and what it has ended up like. Yes, this means that it might be safer for staff to give items that were lost in the bug, however, as it has been kindly pointed out, that would not be a good use of their time. The more important part is that it makes it easier for the dev team to see what is going on.

However, this does come at a cost. It has the potential to create a bit of lag, I do not know if it would have a large impact, but that is the main down side I could see to this system.

Now, I would like to hear from all of you, those who have suffered from this issue, if this is something you would like to try out in hopes of getting it resolved.

Personally, I find this very interesting. However, I don't see it a good idea to repay what items disappear, as that would really eat up the time of the staff... Though with this idea, it actually could be easier to identify what might be the cause. Say Teled Methen had a large chunk reset, and by doing so, items in your hand disappeared. Because they happened at the same time, one could possibly connect the issue with it {though it obviously isn't, this is an example}.

I see this more as a problem killer, not really a refund maker. Cool idea!

Yeah, but then make sure not everyones inventory will get saved at the same time since that will make a laggspike for sure.
And about the refunds.. No. Too much fraud and in all honesty useless.

Updated to reflect the sanity of having items returned as you have pointed out that it really isn't practical.

Also, good call @Nioxed about staggering the saving of player inventory data.

Now I'm curious, what are the thoughts of having this be an 'opt in' system or a global system?

If you experience the inventory issue, you should make a ticket in game and submit as detailed a bug report as possible here:

forums.massivecraft.com/forms/bug-report.7/respond

The more detailed the reports we receive, the closer we can get to resolving the issue.

In all honesty, coding a plugin to track inventory would probably take more time than finding and resolving the issue itself, which are Tech department is trying to do. They require more information to pinpoint the exact issue in the code, however, so bug detailed bug reports are a necessity! Please submit them.

I don't see this as a single use tool, I see this as a possible supplement for resolving many potential issues. Something that can be enabled when things stop working within the field, as we all know, it isn't the first time inventory glitches have happened.

Furthermore, user generated bug reports only can go so far, there is a lot of information that most people won't even think of listing or may not even have access to. This by no means is intended to replace bug reports, just to provide more detailed and accurate information by means of partial activity logs which can be used to do more with the report.

pls explain me how a couple of snapshots can find the isue?
as far as i know tehy are a image.... of a specific moment... that doesn't register what happend....
so, explain to me like i was five years old cause i know nothing of coding (or what you mean at that, rly, otherwise i wouldn't be asking this): how would this be even beneficial/work in the slightest?

I lost Catcat's head to this bug.
IT MUST BE STOPPED.
I've lost a God bow, 3 stacks of gold blocks, and 2 stacks of Silked Diamond ore blocks. I've noticed at least for me it happens when there are a lot of lag spikes going on and I try to shift click the item into or out of my BP. I've also noticed during these same periods of high lag sometimes when I manually drag and drop an item in or out of my BP that item will get duped. So far the only thing that's been duped for me is my own head, a couple stacks of torches, and a bed. Not really a fair trade off for the things I have lost but hey easy come easy go.

This is not a snapshot in the sense of being a literal graphics file, and what you missed what the part about tracking inventory changed from that point. I feel that a good comparison would be the git system for handling source code changes, after the initial posting, it keeps track of what changes are made, in order and with time stamps. But in this case, instead of trying to revert to a prior state, as git would be used for, it would be used to track inventory changes that may be related to the bugs. Essentially, you could start from the snapshot and reapply the changes to see what happened that wasn't expected. Either by the results not being identical or something along the way seems strange.

A fix to this bug might have been made. If you still encounter this issue please fill out the form for a bugreport and name your circumstances as detailed as possible. (What world were you in? How was the tps, low or high? did it repeat itself?)
