After a bit of time watching the ways people on the massivecraft server roleplay, I wanted to make a quick survey of how people prefer to do so. There are many styles of RP that I've seen, and I've given them all labels and examples.

Action RP: So far this is the most common form of RP I've seen where people have their characters dialogue without any indicators, and then have their actions with indicators.

Example: Good morning, love. *he says as he offers them a pancake*
Story RP: Less common, when RP is played out as if being read in a book, where descriptions of the surroundings, and the dispositions of each character are noted without indicators, and then dialogue is placed in quotation.

Example: He looked up as they stumbled down the stairs wearily. "Good morning, love." He says, offering them a pancake.
Active RP: I have not seen this as it's very hard to pull off cleanly. This is when someone does not use action or descriptions even with indicators. Everything they type is dialogue, and the setting is the space their character on the server inhabits.

Example: Good morning, love. (then in-game the player goes to their chest, and places down a cake, meant to be a pancake)

I also wondered how immersed you preferred to be when roleplaying. Do you constantly keep in contact with everyone you are currently roleplaying with, ironing out details of what is happening in the situation, or do you avoid OOC like the plague, letting the situation fold out naturally (or un-naturally, in some cases) and adjust your actions to match them?

I alternate between Action and Story RP, It depends on the mood I am in and the amount of time I have.

I haven't RP'd in ages but it would be nice to make use of my character for once. I used to be fairly active in RP during the old AOL days. For me though I guess it was story was there was no player to control visually.

I usually use action roleplay for the fact its my own character talking not really a book. However, I still story roleplay here and there, but not too often.
-Seransic frowns, as he looks up to Ozgho, who is peacefully smiling- "Watchdog is best pony." -Seransic still upset at the fact that the face is only shopped over another ponies face, instead of an entirely real pony-

Don't believe i've ever story roleplayed. But I have active roleplayed when i was trolling a friend once.

Well, when I do roleplay (which isn't that common, sadly) I usually use the first option. All of my roleplaying is spontaneous roleplaying, so I'm almost never in contact with people outside the roleplay itself. I've also gone with a few of the last option, usually as a joke when it's easy to get (like when a buddy of mine rang a bell I was sitting under and I pretended not to hear them for like 2 minutes, just shouted "What?!" in local).

Well I like to be balanced. the choices remind me of Mass Effect 3 choices where you can choose how you play

Action. But if I am "reading a book" I will hold a book in my hand, so I guess that would have a touch of Active.

I really don't know what I roleplay like I think I mix them here's my explame:

-She gazes off into the distance her blind eyes holding a bit of longing as she wished to see one more sunset- (Action) And when I'm speaking along with doing an action:
"What do you mean he's dead? He was alive yesterday?" -she held a look of confusion as her palms nervously sweated-

I use all these things just depending on what's appropriate for the situation, but I think when I'm just talking to other people, for the most part I do Action. I do like to incorporate as much Active stuff as I can, but if it's not possible, there have been times where I've been like "(just pretend that this is ___)" or whatever.

As far as your question about immersion, I like to keep that mixed as well. A lot of times more major things will be discussed as far as the direction we'd like to go or something like that, but a lot of the fun of rp comes form it's unscripted nature, imo.

I use action role-play, with a few aspects of active role-play, such as actually taking out a sword with -Draws sword-.
I do it the same way, but would like to do more story RP with more descriptions. The problem is that my english isn't good enough to write faster and more fluently.

I don't use OOC that often. Mostly to ask something or to give little hints. But most of the time I let the situation fold out naturally and try to direct it with my RP actions.

I do all three, but I do story the most. It set's up plot for future event's and you can actually understand the characters and enviroment around you.

I'm a bit of a mix between Action and Active. If someone is asking me for something, ex. Reaver for underwear, I'd usually do something along the lines of, "Fine. -looks rather worried-" Then I'll hand him, for example, a piece of wool.

90% of the time I do a mixture of action RP and active RP.
I will typically say the things I am doing, and if it is possible to express the action in game to add to immersion, then I will do so. For example something something like this:

Golemlord: Blah blah blah bananas *nods at the drunken pig*

I would in game move my mouse up and down while looking at the drunken pig, to simulate the nod in addition to saying it.

I rarely do OOC chat unless something needs to be defined. For example if something says:

Misinformedroleplayer: -looks at his pointy ears- hello, elf.
golemlord: ((actually I'm a human. now that I look at my skin, I guess the ears kind of do look pointy. Sorry for the confusion!))

And then we would just continue on. If I was feeling up to it, maybe I would try to play off the racial confusion in RP, but I normally blow it off.

I always do strict RP on the forums, but I don't do forum RP as much as I used to.

Personally, I use the Action-RP, as it best fits my character.
On occasions, I use all the above,
but with William having Schizophrenia, it makes more sense and adds to the RP when William is facing a random corner and seems to be talking to it. There are few chances William truly interacts with his hallucinations, unless you consider speaking one of them. Every time I do, I try to make it give little as hints on the hallucinations as possible, I want people to legit think either William as crazy or truly wonder what it is he seems to be arguing with.
In fact, if someone wanted to have their character mysterious, I'd actually encourage the Action-RP, as it gives less hints and clues as to what you are with, what you do, however it on some occasions can make people think you're smacking a table OOC.

I didn't know your char. was schizophrenic, though we never roleplayed a ton when we were together at Osai. That sounds pretty interesting.

I also agree with you, though I think you meant to say active RP, which is the one where the character physically does something. My only problem with it is it is hard to do some things as you are limited by what you can do in minecraft. Though again I agree with what you said about people having to guess more about things. I mean, in real life you don't automatically know what everything that everyone does means. It adds to the immersion of actually trying to connect with another being, and say the right things, rather than just following scripted dialogue because you know exactly how they feel at the moment.

I usually combine action and active, stating when I do an action prior to physically doing it.

Yeah, if you actually want to know a bit more about my character, you can check out my RP introduction. I constantly update and arrange it however,
but yeah, the barriers of Minecraft do make it harder to do things.
And the barriers of jokers.
Every time it rains or it is night-time in Regalia or IC {And yes, in snow too} I purposefully toggle my crouch key and crouch everywhere, to signify William being a snake and beginning to cool down, during the day or in a warm area, such as the bathing house, I have him walk normally, however in places like Gana-Isha or certain hot locations, I sprint as my basic movements to show him becoming heated.
But when I crouch, it sometimes ends with Kandane finding me and following behind me doing the same.
It's quite funny in some cases, actually. :D
