Personality and Abilities

• External: To the stranger, Hillo is fairly mild. Although humorous to an extent, he largely refrains from crass or otherwise inappropriate jokes, keeping to light verbal jabs, taking great care in the words he uses around others. Hillo tries his best to be cordial with strangers, seeking to create the best external image as possible so as to deflect any trouble away from himself, and get in peoples’ good books. Resultantly, Hillo frequently assists total strangers in utterly menial tasks, just hoping to get himself involved in a collective that could offer him protection, or purpose for the time being.
• Internal: Hillo’s internal opinion is bad. Being short, weak, and not at all built for anything but the scholarly pursuits he partakes in leads Hillo to believe that he’s simply on offcut; a leftover of something greater. As a result, he constantly seeks to identify himself with groups, searching for the collective identity that might just cover his insecurities about self enough that he might forget about them. Indeed, Hillo worries about having a purpose in life, a worry which drives his desire to circumvent death via Soul Magic, in the hopes that he may at least prolong his already long lifespan for long enough to discover the greater reason for him to exist.
• Friends & Family: For Hillo, family and friends are meant to be assisted. His loved ones receive as much assistance as Hillo can give them, whether or not he really agrees with their motives deep down. All the same, Hillo believes that there is a great loyalty that should be owed to family, one that just about extends to friends and lovers. Indeed, this loyalty compels Hillo to comfort and reinforce his loved ones as much as possible, even if at his own expense.
• Morality: Being a city-born Cielothar, Hillo’s morals and values are far removed from those of what may be considered an ‘authentic’ Cielothar, though he does share some facets of their beliefs, mostly stemming from his mother. For example, Hillo would much prefer to avoid violence, but understands the reasoning behind why some people use violence to achieve certain goals. In general, Hillo’s morals revolve around indifference, largely because he simply isn’t capable of intervening in most situations. Only in matters of the Soul will he actually step in to assist.

Life Story
Childhood

• Hillo’sie Ssolas’trella is born to Lle’veia’no’ajo, a Cielothar woman, on the 7th of September, 267AC. He is raised in the Lusits city, Portimao, without a father.
• Despite his single parent upbringing, Hillo grows up with at least the bare necessities, due to his mother’s skill in tailoring. He picks some of it up, enabling him to mostly make his own clothing in later life.
• Throughout his childhood, Hillo is plagued with dreams of a vast, empty white space. He seeks to find out what these are, but doesn’t find a suitable mentor until later on in his life.

Teenage Years

• Hillo abandons his mother’s culture alongside her; they no longer see any benefit to maintaining beliefs that don’t give them anything but hatred in Ailor settlements. Instead, they pick up Unionism to a minor degree.
• Still plagued by his dreams, he goes looking for answers. Eventually, aged 14, he stumbles upon a back alley book shop with precisely the books describing his issues. He reads up on the matters of the Void and the Exist, passing into Planar Essences later on.
• In the same year, Hillo finds a mentor in Soul Magic. He begins with the first spell, Ellon Form, then begins his advancement through three of its spells, focusing particularly on the matters of Soul Essence, and how to collect it. Wanting to provide his own Qatils for himself, he takes up Clockwork Engineering as a hobby.
• Hillo progresses through six of the eight Soul Magic spells, seeking the ability to manipulate and understand Soul Essence over the more physical benefits that the Ellon spells would offer. He does, however, take up the Ellon Communion spell, in case of emergency.

Adulthood

• Hillo spends the next years of his life pursuing knowledge of Soul Essence, eventually accruing a collective 20 years of knowledge on the subject. He takes up the trade of selling various clockwork trinkets to fund the creation of yet more Qatils, so he can continue harvesting Soul Essence.
• Around age 25, after reading up on the irreparable damage caused to a Soul by death, Hillo decides he wants to find a way to restore the soul without the use of Soul Bridging. He wants to discover a method of circumventing death.
• At the advent of the Bone Horror Crisis, Hillo flees Lusits, fearing for his life. He heads to Regalia, setting up a new life in the Holy City. He struggles to find a place in the Holy City, but manages to eke out a living selling Qatils where possible, or selling his services as a Soul Mage. From there, he has no clue where he might end up next.
