As any other would, he smiles and laughs heartily. He is at his kindest when content, possessing mercy and generosity that would otherwise be a rarity of his. How would your character respond to experiencing Fear? In the world of fight or flight, Hengest does both. His instincts tell him to rid himself of the perceived threat so he can make a retreat to safety if no other options present themselves. His bravery is up for debate, but his will to persevere is undisputed. How would your character respond to experiencing Stress? Silence. Stress causes the man to contemplate his moves carefully, maintaining a calm exterior while he digs deep into his mind to decide on what to do next. How does your character view Law and Authorities? A mere plaything. Hengest understands that law and authority must be backed by might, and he is quick to probe out the strengths and weaknesses of the people he meets. Power, in his opinion, is worthless without a powerful personality holding it. He will obey the law and authorities, in his own way, assuming that they are not detrimental to his goals or interests. How does your character feel about Races other than their own? They need to get back to their own countries. The Regalian Empire is the Empire of Mankind, and they need to remember that. He holds general disdain towards the ‘lesser’ races, though will tolerate them if they prove to be useful in their fields of expertise. On a sidenote, he doesn’t view dwarves as a different race, treating them simply as he would his fellow humans. How does your character feel about Religion for themselves, and other faiths? He doesn’t actually care much for it at all. Those who know him more privately are aware of his disinterest in religion and general apathy towards other religions. He thinks of it more as a political tool he’ll gladly use to gain advantages and boons. How does your character feel about the Arcane and Magical in the world? Disdain to the fullest. Hengest believes that any and all magic corrupts, regardless of how much good intentions are being shown to him. It is an evil that cannot be tolerated or be proliferated. No exceptions. How does your character feel towards their family? Hengest’s relationship with his family is difficult. The House Harhold of Vlissinghelm has a wide variety of different personalities in it, and they don’t always see eye to eye. He is harsh and strict with his children, but never cruel, his intentions are always good. All in all, family is important for him, and he is adamant to make sure that the enemies he makes only come for him, and not his kin. What is your character the most proud of about themselves? His fame and notoriety. The fact that he knows his name is known throughout the world, and that his actions have impacted so many people makes him feel very accomplished. He strives towards making himself an even more legendary figure. What motivates your character to move forward and better their life? Ambition. There’s always something else to do. As long as he lives and breathes he can always get stronger, wiser, greater renown. What is your character's biggest insecurity? His terrible literacy. Hengest mostly relies on a team of scribes to write for him. Though he is capable of reading and writing himself it is an arduous task for him that takes time and considerable effort. Those who have had the pleasure of watching him read know that he relies on pointing his finger under the words and mouthing them out faintly. He hates it, and knows it is the one thing that people will use as firepower against his reputation. He’s not stupid, he swears. What is your character's biggest fear? Hengest is no stranger to defeat or loss, but what he fears the most is losing those he loves because of his actions. Contrary to popular belief he isn’t utterly heartless, after all. Life Story (Required) Hengest was born in the Gaekgraan area of Vlissinghelm in the late autumn of 265AC as the second son of the Lord of the House Harhold. He was granted the usual upbringing of a highborn lad, living frivolously and carelessly for his first few years. Reliable sources claim that he has had a temper from a young age, though his cruelty and often-time malicious behaviour came about when he was beginning to learn to read and write. He lagged behind all the other children of his age, much to the frustration of Hengest, the court tutor and seemingly most of all Hengest’s father Lord Elric. Dozens of slaps he had to endure, his father’s disappointment incarnate. He was accused of laziness and stupidity time and time again, finally ending with getting ‘relieved’ from his classes so he could stop bringing shame to the family. The humiliation of the decision and the increased sparetime became a nasty combination when dropped into the lap of an already short-tempered boy. Hengest spent his time being a delinquent, sneaking out of the family castle to be a bad influence on the other youngsters of Vlissinghelm’s high society. Hengest’s innate charisma along with his violent tendencies went hand in hand with this period of his life, having formed himself a small band of fellow miscreants consisting of squires, the bastards of his father’s vassals and the sons of merchants. The young Hengest and his posse would strut around the capital of Vlissinghelm, causing trouble he knew he could get away with. His father was, as per usual, not pleased with his son’s direction in life, but he was glad he did something at the very least. Lord Elric rarely chided his son’s bullying ways, rather encouraging it as he saw some potential behind it all. Despite the negative attitude and behaviour he was displaying some true talents for leadership and a high social and emotional intelligence. With a little unrequested help from his older brother it was decided that Hengest would be enrolled into the military academy so he could put his unique perspectives and particular skills to good use. It was the first time Hengest had been to the imperial capital, an experience he’d never forget. So many of his expectations were crushed when he came there, not particularly fond of the great diversity of races present. It was something he simply had to power through. In the city he would come to know figures such as William Howlester, a fellow he’d only speak to in passing though never truly forming much of a friendship. Ten years were spent in that city, from age 14 to 24. In his spare time he would exercise his unarmed combat skills, sparring and fighting to let off steam or to simply enjoy himself. Generally a rather uneventful part of his life, nothing too drastic happened during these years other than his arranged marriage to Vivienne d’Eluise at around 16-17. The Lord of Vlissinghelm’s son graduated the academy as a vigorous, ambitious twenty-four year old man who was quick to get himself involved with the Imperial Military. He and his father lobbied hard to get him commissioned as he didn’t have the benefit of a famed name like the sons of the other high lords he graduated with. The attempts were a success and Hengest would come to find himself in every Regalian war ‘till the current year. His father was pleased to see the results of his ‘investment’ after he received word from the front of his son’s skill and cunning in war. Quite so, Hengest thrived in the chaotic and uncertain world that is armed conflict. Some would even say he found it highly amusing, or simply far too proud and unafraid of using force. The Chrysant Wars would be where he first met his match, a war that would change him into the man the world knows him as today. A series of defeats and horrible skirmishes with the scaled foes filled his heart with an unbridled hatred for all things foreign and non-ailor. It was at that time he would become acquainted with the unscrupulous individuals he would be a notorious lackey of in future years. War after war he became more adept at his craft. The danger that was Hengest Harhold grew with every year, as he rose both in titles, wealth and manpower. The Hound Lord of old may not be as powerful as he once was, but the threat lurking within him hasn’t gone anywhere. With his influence back on the rise there is no way of knowing where this unstable warlord may go next in the world.
Here's my review - Your weaknesses are very lackluster in description. Just as you did with your talents, make sure these are at least three sentences each. The third paragraph of his personality should differentiate between friends and family more clearly, as obviously he wouldn't treat them the same. Please make sure you add in the School of Bloodcast as one of his talents as a balancing measure. Mark these changes in red and tag me when you're done.
Firstly, the formatting needs work here. There are a lot of broken bullet points and odd breaks in paragraphs. Try to clean this up a bit. Are you sure this is still a relevant personality point in Hengest's current position? How has he evolved since those days when he was just a follower, but is now a leader? This needs a few more sentences of expansion. Talents have been removed from applications now. There is no need for this section at all. Merge this together into one formal paragraph detailing his lack of education and such. Substance abuse is not a valid weakness, so simply just remove this. It wouldn't hurt to build the life story past this point, as so much has happened since the Montagaard days. Makes edits in purple and @ me when done.
Edited to be more compliant with the new proficiency rules, and some other changes to proficiencies. All marked in red. @Mooffins
Re-written his backstory to fit in better with the new Harhold lore. Also made changes to the proficiencies. Changes are made in blue.
His body build stat would only be 13 with current proficiencies. Racial and cultural boosts do not factor in to this. Also, as with your previous reviewer, please remove weapon of choice. It no longer fits into the current template. @Jonificus
@Jonificus Only note is that the birthdate doesn't line up with his age, please match these and tag me once complete.
Minor prof change: Removed Statesman education pack and put the 3 points into Two-Handed Blunt Combat, raising the total points invested to 7. EDIT: After two minutes of reflection I've changed it to 3 points into Sword Combat instead.
