Ulric Typhonus rode the massive first army out to meet Fatiq Isla-Mullahr in the field. Fatiq was a high ranked Saruhannan Al-Iqta. For the first time, Ulric would meet his equal in the field of battle, yet his army severely outnumbered the Qadir army. Perhaps on some level, Ulric was even looking forward to the course of this battle, a true test of skill and honor on the field. Unfortunately the battle would not go as Ulric planned, in fact more things would go wrong that anyone could even anticipate before the battle started. The men were in high spirits, four battle columns formed on both lines. Both Ulric and Fatiq chose not to employ any special tactics and fight each other head on like honorable generals. The two met before the battle started at the center exchanging honors and wishing each other favor and chance in battle.

The four columns clashed at similar times, cascading from the left to the right. The first column to engage fully was Liam Typhonus supported by Maximillian Typhonus as tactician. The battle seemed to be hugely favorable to the Regalian side until it was revealed that the Qadir hid wind mages among their troops. Liam Typhonus was quickly struck from the battle when a wayward shield bashed him in the head, channeled by a wind mage. He was knocked unconscious, forcing Thurinor Aglarebon to drag him off the field while attempting to fend off the Qadir behind him. Marek Dredros was frontally hit by a flying horse, breaking both arms and several ribs after fighting for several minutes. The army quickly collapsed in on itself with the officer gone as Maximillian could not keep the lines from falling apart. Eventually the first column would retreat, forcing the second column to fight at worsening odds.

Aron Santorski had already engaged the second column by the time the remnants of the first Qadir column clashed against his own troops. Aron was supported by his kinsman Casimir Santorski as a tactician who attempted to bolster their defences. Aron Santorski was eventually overwhelmed however by the same tactics employed against the first column, though from the side. Outflanked and with the wind against them, Aron Santorski retreated from the field while he and Cassius Montaigu had received several bruises and minor cuts. Luna Levine did however distinguish herself as a competent fighter, saving several lives of the Regalian troops.

Ulric hoped the third and fourth column could turn the chances on the Qadir, leading the lines behind them on horseback. Suddenly and unexpectedly, a row of crossbowmen turned around, aimed their crossbows at Ulric and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Regalian soldiers attacked the crossbowmen who were quickly cut down as Ulric's reserve retinues tried to protect him from further fire. The first salvo missed Ulric himself, hitting the horse in its hind legs and one bolt piercing the shoulder of Michael Corcairdhear who tried to come to Ulric's aid. The second salvo of arrows however hit target, one piercing Ulric's shoulder also, as well as his left leg and several hit the horse. The horse staggered one last time before it collapsed sideways, Ulric could not escape from the horse fast enough and shocked in the events. The horse fell down on top of his legs, breaking his feet. Rythian Belledin fought and killed the crossbowmen as Alistair Coen rushed towards Ulric to drag him from under the horse. Alistair managed to free Ulric but as soon as he did, more soldiers paced closer drawing swords with the intention of finishing the job. Alistair alone fought against the attackers, slaying them all as they tried to kill him and Ulric who was severely bleeding and in pain on the ground. Alistair then rushed Ulric back to the camp to allow the doctors and healers to attend to him while William Coen and Thomas Kade engaged the third and fourth column, completely unaware of what had happened behind them. It could not be determined who or why the traitors shot Ulric. The soldiers under William Coen's command came from various levies, Coen, Fong, Anahera, Kade, Typhonus, Fuchs, Jonckeer, Black, Zastorzy, and more. The attack certainly left the army shocked when they found out, or rather when Ulric's commands stopped coming.

William's army performed better than the previous two, William who had just recently returned from being wounded was looking forward to performing well in the field. Atilio Amaya, despite not being a very talented tactician, was able to steele the lines before the enemy mages appeared, using various shield walls to break the wind torrents. William was able to defeat his adversary in the field with the aid of Eranduril Teldallen and Darius Valor, though the latter only barely avoided being stabbed in the stomach when William deflected a spear stab from a Qadir with his shield. Thomas was less lucky however. An exceptionally large Qadir with a massive mace smashed Thomas's right leg, breaking several bones in the process and sending him to the floor screaming. Arend Alder could not prevent the attack from occurring, but he did slay the monster within seconds of the act. Together with Ramone Diaz who fought averagely, Arend was able to take over leadership of the army while supporting Thomas in a retreat. The battle was almost a victory, but eventually Arend decided Thomas's well being was more important and he abandoned the troops, causing an almost stalemate loss to occur.

With the battle columns around them collapsing and William seeing his allies retreat with many casualties, rallied the troops. He jumped on a nearby rock, urging the troops to fall back in line and march forward to press on to victory. Outnumbered and outmatched by two columns, William steered the troops onward and managed to grasp victory from the clutches of death as he faced both Plaras Usballah and Walilah Sattaqu on the field, the Qadir commanders of those columns. William was pushed into a corner by Plaras, deflecting his sword strikes with his own sword, while also holding off Walilah who kept attacking him with a spear with his shield. William eventually managed to deflect a strike from Walilah, twisting his sword and stabbing him straight in the heart. Plaras lost his footing and immediately called the retreat, making the last columns route from the field while the Regalian troops still stood victorious, though at severe losses to the nobility leading them.

The court responded in a fairly shocked manner, largely at the betrayal within its own army by levies attacking Ulric Typhonus. Ulric was rushed back to the capital while William Coen was temporarily put in charge of leading the army. Ludwig Fuchs was commanded to take over the first army to ensure the course of the war would continue, though Ulric was disabled from participating for at least three weeks if not more. He was asked by the court to nominate a replacement for the second army himself, ensuring that the second army could continue fighting for the sake of the war. The court meanwhile also expressed extreme appreciation for William Coen and Alistair Coen, both for rescuing the course of the battle as well as saving Ulric Typhonus's life. The court promised it would launch an immediate thorough investigation to find out who was behind the assassination attempt.

She still hadn't gotten around to replacing the poppies at her desk.

The envelope from the state lay neatly ripped and cast aside on her desk, its contents spilled sloppily in front of her. She had already read the letter, of course, and she was still working out how she felt. Things didn't go exactly as planned, but there was nothing to be done. The message was read clearly, for certain.

She casually wiped her hand across the desk, slowly pushing the envelope and the letter off the desk and on the floor. A servant would see to that later. Meanwhile, she pinched another parchment and plucked up her quill:

To the House Coen,

The bravery and valor displayed by one's own March William inspires the slow heart of myself. It is the glory and courage you so boldly presented in the face of evil that makes me truly proud to be human, and of the empire. Considering what you have done thus in battle and what you shall certainly achieve later on, serving under you in the name of the empire would nary be a duty, but an honor and a privilege. Your skill and perseverance in commitment to the empire and war allow my compliments and well wishes.

With due Admiration & Praise,
Teresa Esmeralda de la Casa de Anahera
Commissioner of Trade in the Imperial State Council
Mother to the Viceroy Alejandro of the House Anahera

With a few practiced folds and a blob of wax stamped with the Anahera poppy, the letter would be sent off to the Grunnplicht Estate -- just across the way from the Bayeri Estate. Meanwhile, Teresa began on yet another letter:
To the Lord Ulric of the House Typhonus,

I am thoroughly saddened and despaired at word of the savage betrayals that have befallen you. A man of prestige and honor such as yourself simply should not and can not be treated thus, especially in recognition of your service to the Empire. I wish to visit you, my Lord, to pay my respects and appropriate greetings -- should you allow me I would be most grateful.

With Sincere Respects and Expressed Sorrows,
Teresa Esmeralda de la Casa de Anahera
Commissioner of Trade in the Imperial State Council
Mother to the Viceroy Alejandro of the House Anahera

By the time the little courier boy was on the little boat and rowing towards Typhonus Burgh just across the skinny waterway, Teresa was watching him atop the Bayeri Estate's balcony. The sun was setting, and the waters were glittering most beautifully. Such serenity in times of impending chaos and terror seemed to be the moments of true peace. She looked down over the balcony, a fresh bed of poppies bloomed and ripe. She'd have to have Mateo pick a few more. She thoroughly disliked stale flowers in her home.

The last rays of sunshine disappeared into the horizon as the sun set over the Typhonus-Burgh. The doors of Lord Ulric Typhonus' study creaked open, the soft tapping of wood upon wood echoing through the halls. Ulric himself limped to his desk, his cane tapping in succession with his slowed steps as a servant paced steadily behind him, attempting to synchronize his pace with that of the injured Lord's. Pain was evident on Ulric's expression. The servant had offered his assistance, but Ulric had turned him down. What use was a man who couldn't maneuver through his own home by himself?

Finally reaching his desk, Ulric unceremoniously plopped himself down, winching as a searing pain shot through his left leg. Gritting his teeth as he attempted to mask his discomfort, he propped his cane up on his chair, turning his attention to the servant with a raised brow. The servant was a young man, perhaps in his mid twenties. He took a careful step forward, setting a letter down atop his desk. It was a pasty white letter, stamped with a midnight blue poppy. Ulric's expression immediately soured. Waving the servant out of the room, Ulric broke the letter's seal, pulling the parchment from within. It took only a brief moment of reading before the Lord tossed the letter to the side, letting it glide slowly to the floor. Teresa was the one and he knew it. She simply had to be. The Coens, his allies. The Fongs, certainly shifty but not /that/ aggressive. The Kades, they wished to finish the bloody war, the Fuchs with them. The Jonckeers, Blacks, and Zastorzys wouldn't dare pull a move that bold. It only left one family's levies responsible. The same family who had tried to take his own cousin to court over a forced marriage and false charges, and the same family that was trying to cripple his Lordship's trade fleet.

He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the ends of his chair's armrests. He had had enough. The House Anahera had been a pain in his side for too long. First, a
naive Lady from the palace of Avalon. Next, a Chancellor who's mind was clouded with narcotics. And now this, an elderly lady with a poison tongue. Ulric exhaled, releasing his death-grip on the armrests. If he was going to do anything, he had best start now. Grabbing a nearby ink pot and quill, the Lord began to scrawl down several names onto a slip of parchment, trying his best to ignore the burning sensation in his bandaged shoulder. Recalling his servant, he handed over the folded parchment, giving a simple instruction. "
See that an audience is set up with all of the listed names." he commanded. The servant gave a smart bow, before disappearing out of the chamber. Ulric watched him go, returning his cane to his grasp. With one war's end, another would begin.

Weeeeelp. I knew Thomas' life was too positive to not be rekt again.
