Gerard spent most of his time with his mother, taking basic schooling starting around the age of seven years old. A few months after turning ten, his parents sent him off to the Villiers Monastery in order to join the Villiers-Eclair Order. Youth (Age 11 - Age 20) For five years as a page Gerard learned the teachings of the Conclave, spending long nights reading text and reinforcing his beliefs in unionism. Gerard learned about unionism and found a strong devotion to it from the beginning of his training. From early on, Gerard showed a natural gift at handling a blade, even so much so as to catch the attention of many of the order’s elders. When he turned fifteen, he was made a squire and assigned to a Paladin by the name of Roden Marson, an older knight who had served the Order faithfully for many years. Roden instructed Gerard through-out his time as a squire, helping refine Gerard’s raw talent with a blade into a polished art. During this time, Gerard was also taught how to handle a horse, and how to handle himself in combat while mounted. Six months after turning twenty, Gerard was deemed a Man-at-Arms by the order, and was granted the Synodical Villiers Seal. Adulthood (Age 21 - Present) Gerard lived in Basta even after becoming a knight of the order, deciding to serve the order from their headquarters. Alongside his former mentor, Roden Marson, Gerard served the conclave for years, sometimes as a representative and icon of faith, many times as a soldier fighting enemies of the faith. Gerard’s talents were noticed by many after countless battles and showings, proving himself even more after stopping an assassination attempt against an elder of the order. *When Gerard was twenty-five, he, Roden, and other knights of the order were sent on a mission to visit a couple of churches that had reported problems with local pagans vandalizing the church and harassing curates. One day, the group arrived at one of the churches being engulfed in flames. The group quickly dismounted and set to work fighting the flames in an attempt to save the church. After close to an hour, their efforts paid off as the group was able to prevent the church from being totally annihilated. Upon searching the scene during the aftermath though, Gerard turned the corner to find Roden dead with two swords stuck through his chest. Distraught but devoted, Gerard took it upon himself to help lead the group to the remaining churches they still needed to visit and help. Upon finishing the mission and returning to the Villiers-Eclaire Order headquarters in Basta, Gerard was taken before the elders and commended for his job in taking leadership of the group when needed. As a result, the elders decided to pair Gerard up with another elder in the future, to learn alongside and help develop the skills needed for leading a small unit. This partnership lasted for about ten years allowing Gerard to go on many missions with his newfound mentor.* When a letter showed up addressed to Gerard stating that his family had been ennobled, Gerard immediately sought council with the elders. After hours of discussion, it was ruled that Gerard may continue his service to the order by carrying out his duties in Regalia, but should the order need him he were to return when called. Gerard has since lived in Regalia, occasionally taking short trips into the archipelago. Upon one of these trips during a mission issued by the Villiers-Eclaire Order, he encountered a small unorganized religious militia that had banded together in order to help defend the local unionist churches against attacks. He found there attempt rather weak, but the spirit and devotion were commendable nonetheless. Upon discussion with the group, he convinced them to halt their unorganized efforts in order to listen to him while he instructed them and helped them to grow their numbers. Now, they follow him if there is ever a conflict or religious struggle in need of men. Regalia Updates! Gerard has spent most of his time in the city with Aelfric Harhold, serving as his personal protector and confidant. Gerard has hosted some small charity events and a few large ones, while also participating in tournaments between the different knight orders. During his off time, he has taken to studying various artifacts, as he feels since it was an artifact that earned him his Paladin title, perhaps it is valuable knowledge to know of other unionist artifacts. Spoiler: Earning his Title Having served the Villiers-Eclaire Order for 27 years, Gerard has taken the tenants of Gossele to heart. Having engaged in public charity efforts and participation in several tournaments, Gerard’s name began to gain note for both his military prowess, and his virtuous heart. On a mission in the Regalian Archipelago, Gerard came across a disorganized band of Unionists whose goal it was to safeguard the local abbey from local banditry. Taking pity on the group, Gerard suspended his mission temporarily to train the band into a more organized militia, offering them instruction to best preserve the holy ground. It would later be learned that the militia Gerard trained ended up defeating a band of Void Worshippers who were operating in the nearby forest, succeeding in defending the abbey much to the delight of the local Curate, who sent a sealed letter with Gerard back to Basta when the Man-at-Arms returned to check up on the group. Delivering the unopened letter to the Elder Council, it was revealed that Gerard had unintentionally protected the Sword of Heron Yvrize, a Unionist Relic that was being stored in the Abbey on its way back to the Crown Isle. For his selfless act in helping those less equipped, guarding a holy site, and unintentionally guarding a Unionist Relic, Gerard was promoted to the rank of Paladin within the Order. He was deemed the Holy Mountain Goat Paladin.
