The frail old servant was ushered down the stone steps to the face of an reinforced cellar door.
"On now, hurry up." The escort ordered.
The servant hesitantly opened the door, entering the dim lit chamber, with only a small candle in the corner of the room emitting light.
A broad man leaned back in a chair, his legs resting on the desk in front of him and his legs crossed.
"Hmph." The man groaned with disappointment.
"You had one job, you know that?"
"I - I'm sorry, sir, I didn't know-"
The old man was cut off. "I told you, old man! I ran you through every scenario possible, all you had to do was give him the drink."
"I - I didn't mean to! I didn't know he was going to grab his own glass!"
"You didn't know. That was your mistake." The man leaned forward, grabbing a glass of wine that stood on his desk and then eyed the old man's escort, "Say, why don't we show our friend what should of happened last night?"
The escort, who was leaning against the cellar wall, leaned forward. "Heh.." The Kathar had a sadistic grin across his face, pulling a knife out of his pocket, "With pleasure..."
The seven men strolled through the darkness in caution, some waving torches around to combat the night.
"So, what do ye think the kings gonna do about that show last night, eh?" One of the patrolling guards asked.
"I dunno, whatever went down, hopefully the sick man behind it gets caught." One of the footman declared, gripping the sword on his hilt.
"Yeah, a shame what happened to Count Hath. If only it happened to the King himself."
A few of the guards paused, turning to the guard who made the statement. "What?..."
"I said..." The guard's hand moved slowly to his side, "F*** the King."
Suddenly in one swift motion, half of the guards present on the patrol unsheathed their swords, slicing down the others.
One of the soldiers fell to the ground and began crawling, "Gah! W-what the F***?!"
The soldier in question slowly walked up to the guard, resting a boot on his back.
"It's about time we get rid House Athius, once and for all."
He plunged his sword into the guards back.
Theon sat at his office chair, fiddling with a quill, jotting notes about his encounter last night.
Silvanus stood before him, pacing back and forth across the room.
"It doesn't make sense. Why would anyone do such a thing to Count Hath?"
"I don't know... That's why we're here, I'm trying to think of why.. But.. I got nothin'. Count Hath hasn't been in any controversy that I could think of, I don't know who would dislike him... There's no dirt on him... Perhaps a spy? From the Sovereign of Umbra? Perhaps Argost or Enigma?"
The two sat there for some time, lost in thought.
Silvanus paused, "Perhaps you're right."
Theon looked up, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Maybe... Maybe it doesn't make sense because what happened to Lucien wasn't meant for him."
"You think?..." Theon shuddered at the thought.
"Yes... They're trying to finish you off..."
As the sun rose over the plains of Insani, announcing the day of the coronation, only half the size of the patrols returned home.
