False Hope

As Peggy entered the estate, she could feel an odd sense of tension that was foreign to her home. All that could be heard were the sounds of a shoe pressing into the ground. Peggy peered around the corner to see Amelia crushing flowers under her shoe.

"Amelia, are you alright?"

"N-nothing..."

Her older cousin stood to leave the lounge as she put a hand on Amelias shoulder. She felt Amelia rise and fall from her crying. Peggy knew how to comfort the gentle girl, but even after many tries, Amelia refused to explain, only saying,
"Ask the others upstairs."

Up the oak stairs, Peggy approached Marias room. Even with the doors held open, she felt as if she wouldn't be wanted. Peggy knocked on the door sill before entering and taking a seat at the end of the bed.

"Tell me what's the matter."

The two girls sat there, one in worry and the other in uncertainty. Peggy had never seen her cousin this way, in such despair. She could tell her cousin meant her words. Words that spoke with a loss of hope.
The girls discussed options, plans, and schemes to which none pleased the other. Until they decided on a plan to try, even when the odds were against them.

"Well, if we are going to do this, we need to begin now. Come along."

Maria stood quickly, moving out of the room. Maria's attitude turned to one of determination.
Peggy remained sat on the bed, watching her cousin leave. She was not sure if she had helped or just led her to false hope.
