I remember the first time I joined Massive, I spawned into Regalia and was blown away. Though I never really walked past the first archways of the city. Instead, I was drawn to the docks, where many ships were docked, each set to a different world. I don't remember if I though that the server was on one big map or not, but having the ships there really was a welcomed sight for me when I was a new player.

I would like to propose to the World Staff that instead of the water portals currently being utilized in regalia to showcase a faction world here and there, perhaps maybe expand the harbor a bit to include some fast travel ships like before.

I see this change having a few benefits:
  • It makes the regalian harbor seem more like a harbor, and less like a 6 ship dock.
  • Despite going against the centralized RP thought, it may encourages RPers to use the survival spawns for their RPs. I know I had to RP in Jorrhild recently for a progression, and it was enjoyable.
Though at the same time, there are a few consequences:
  • There's a lot of faction maps, and that would mean a lot of ships. and a lot of ships means less space for housing and so forth.
  • Even if building wasn't an issue, there is no good place near spawn to place ships. The southern district being designed could potentially house ships, but the traffic to said district would be small.
  • It defeats the centralizing RP to Regalia. While surival spawn RP probably wouldn't do much, it might not be worth the effort if only 12 or so people might use it.
I leave the rest up for discussion.

Ships were cool, I remember the ships, they were cool. And that's all I'll contribute at this point. *thumbsup*

Ships were cool, the wierd hub we have now isn't (and makes massive look like one of those generic mini game servers).

Im down for this. It might make the cities more appealing for casual RP. I recently had RP on Pack Isle as well. It might be a project, but if the docks get expanded massively, adding ships for each factions map, and the quest worlds, would be nice. Makes everything feel more connected.

I miss the ships too.

When I first tp'd to the new hub my first thought was "wtf is this?" -sorry whoever built it.

I mean, I think they were trying to cut down on confusion? But now I'm just more confused.

With the boats, that illusion of travel was there. Which there is so little of these days with the overuse of portals.

At least Ithania still has roads.

Could have ships designed after the cultures they're based on. A Long Ship for Jorrhild, things like that.

Oh the ships. How cool they were. Just a line of ships full of portals made me full of curiosity. Favorite part of Regalia. Hands down.

The issue is the ships would probably be in a place far removed from RP but not near spawn.

They connected our world and made it feel like one place that you travelled around. I miss them too.

For people who are familiar with the server, they were great, but for new players they were confusing as all hell and detrimental to their ability to understand where to go early on, one of the most crucial aspects of keeping a player hooked in the first hour.

What if they don't need to be in Regalia? How about redesigning the hub itself to a ship port, or any other transportation station, instead of what it is now? No offense to whoever built it, but I agree that aesthetically all the current hubs feel like a step back from all previous designs and kind of a turn off.

A more aesthetically pleasing hub for factions would be great even if it didn't include ships (I really like the idea of traveling to different worlds using boats though) because right now we have a very flat/green hub with some villagers that stare at you while grunting (no offense to whoever built it though). If the boat idea really starts to float and gets built, it will hopefully start to connect RPers back to the faction worlds.

I thought each ship had a sign telling where it went and a short description? Would it be possible to have a villager standing in front of the ship that describes where it takes you?

For the hubs, how about adding these bits below each Gamemode:

PvP: On/Off
Building: On/Off

idk man when I first joined there were ships, and it wasn't that confusing.

The ships made Massivecraft give it the feel it was supposed to have, and as BenRekt said, stopped it from looking like 'one of those generic minigames servers'. +1 Agree

I like the idea of a harbor style hub, though ships in Regalia were cool, yeah. My problem is it connects Survival with Roleplay too much, and blurs the lines. Starting off in RP, I owned a faction, and thought that that meant I was a "king of a far away land". While I love the idea of ships in Regalia, it should be clear that Factions =/= Roleplay.

I love the harbor hub idea, though.

Or maybe it's finally time that Factions and Roleplay are no longer mutually exclusive?

I would love a way to make Factions compliant in the lore, though it could take away the fun of having freedom to create lore for factions.

Factions to me should have a mix between Roleplay and PvP, while overall being about building. Factions, though, is up to the factions players.
IMO, softcore roleplay should take more of a place in factions, but that's got nothing to do with this, really, so forgive my brief rant.

I loved the ships! I totally agree with everything here: I think they connected roleplay and factions a little and really made the server seem special.

One suggestion would be to have a small sailboat that teleports players to a larger area, either a ship or a harbor, that has all the teleports.

Another thing: I thought this thread was for having individual rentable ships for each faction, and that might be a cool idea (like a ship rental where you ARE allowed to have portals, so that factions can kinda advertise their builds and have warps without an alt faction.) this is a strange idea that I thought I would throw out here and that could be done in addition.

This wasn't the original idea. It was to suggest bringing back a warp system to travel to faction hubs like before. Though if you wanted to make a separate thread, go ahead.

A portal hub would be better. Each portal surrounded by things from that world like it's bleeding through the portal.

Think we had that right after the boats but before the thing we have now.

I mean ships were BEST but portals better than sign room.

If only you could make it snow only around the Jorrhild portal. Awwhh yiissss.

what we have now is aesthetically pretty great. BUT it doesnt have the personality that the old portal room or the old ships had

Portals would probably be much more convenient and easier to understand since the teleports are just a few steps away from each other. I feel ships are more immersive and aesthetically pleasing though, moreso if it was even airships. The Ellador airship hub was quite fun to prance around in.

If you position the portal on the edge or corner of a snow chunk, you can pinpoint it more.

Can you only adjust weather per chunk? I know biomes are not strictly defined by chunk.

Yes but. As far as I know, it'd still have to be raining everywhere else though. So noisy. Do not want.

Oh, hm. You can simply disable pearling in the area.

Maybe.

I'm sure there's some sort of world editing wizardry to make it easier than all that but I haven't been messing with small biome brushes or weather in my world editing to know what it is.

Sure would be nice.

Since we're suggesting stuff, would be nice if there was a bit of continuity and the hub vehicles are the same one as their respective faction spawns. For example, the ship to Hyarroc is the same airship currently at Hyarroc spawn, the ship to Fendarfall is the same ship in Fendarfall spawn, etc.

aight, this is slightly getting off topic with the discussion of portals. I'll just leave my two cents here to get it back on topic, and addressing the one comment that I have been meaning to get to, but have been lazy and tired until now.

I know my first time on the server I jumped on the ships and traveled around. I left a few minutes later, but that impression let me return even after I forgot what massive's ip was.

Would it be a possible consideration to still plop some ships down in the harbor areas, or that new housing area south of spawn? that may not be ideal for saying "hey, look at our server maps" but it gives a little more nautical atmosphere to a city based around trade.

I kinda liked this idea. While I prefer the villagers in terms of simplicity and lack of confusion, the design of the hub could use a bit more design instead of just the generic warp system many servers use.

I guess maybe you spawn on a dock and you see abunch of villagers next to various ships? It would be work intensive, but hey, food for though in future plans.

I forgot it wasn't chunk specific. :P

Though, you could set the rest to the Desert, End, or Hell(Nether) biomes, all of which prevent rain.

I like the boats+villagers ideas. Maybe make the Villagers be quest NPCs that tell you about the worlds that the represented ship takes you to?

Maybe make the NPCs captains of the ships with fun dialog like: Arrr so ye be wantin to sail to Jorrhild? Brrr, tiz be shivery thar! Make sure to take yer warm undergarments ye hear!
