Character Information
Emmerich is a zealous, but somewhat naive, man who genuinely believes in the benevolent power of the Unionist college as bringers of enlightenment and prosperity, perhaps willfully blind to its corrupt and often despotic tendencies. He is dedicated to spreading the faith's influence and increasing its power so as to more quickly bring about the Great Way. He uses diplomatic means to try to bring about a stronger, more centralized empire under the guidance of the faith and the Everwatcher's vessel. He generally avoids violence but has an immensely practical side that is usually hidden, believing the ends justify the means when working to bring about paradise.

Background
-
Emmerich was raised on the border of Osteiermark and Calemberg by a family of fur traders. As the second son of the family, it was always known he would be sent off to seminary and as such he studied devoutly under the local celate as a child.
Emmerich attended seminary in Drachenwald studying between the ages of 16 and 20 under a group of celates who believed their purpose was to guide the hand of the lay rulers to strengthen the centralized empire under the Everwatcher. These celates saw the political involvement of the Unionist College not as a sign of corruption, but as a tool for the guidance of the empire to expansion and purgation of all that prevented the Great way.
Emmerich's first assignment was to a temple in Osteiermark, which strengthened his purist beliefs. He was then sent by his superiors to Regalia to turn the eyes of the city towards its own and the empire's divine betterment. -
-Emmerich's overarching principle is that of worldly benediction. That the empire is meant to be a holy blessing on Aloria that acts to minimize suffering, cruelty, and tyranny so that it can unite all in paradise. He will push the empire to act benevolently and avoid what he sees as overly selfish politics that degrade its holy status. This makes him relatively politically accessible to anyone who can make a case that their policy fits with a definition of a strong, benevolent holy empire.
-All other faiths are considered misguided and he believes eventually all citizens of the empire will convert to Unionism prior to the achievement of the Great Way, but the timeline for that is extremely nebulous which makes him willing to cooperate with most other faiths to better the empire.
-Emmerich believes magic to be a corruption that seeks to hamper the journey to paradise and will treat any magical beings with some distrust. However, he also believes it can be used to aid the empire and that this burden can be put to use as a blessing, making him relatively open to being swayed by both pro-arcane characters as well as purists depending on the implications for the empire.
-Emmerich is a diplomat and so tries to find common ground with almost any person, thus he is easily approached by many. -
In no particular order and in the form of journal entries
Eydis:
"When I first saw her, I thought I should need to brace myself for combat, but now I think we may understand something of each other. Something important."
Leandre Delmotte:
"The only picture I can have for the man is a flame. Oh, he tries to hide it all under civility and idle chatter, but I cannot help but see the light peek through the hazy gauze of it all. And I think it may be just the kind of burning hope we all require."
Adagio Von Rolanthe:
"When one imagines a knight-lord, I think they may come to a picture very similar to that of Count Von Rolanthe, but I am curious as more and more the man seems a thing cut of idiosyncrasies. Regardless, he has been a friend even when our duties may diverge."
Kaya Sorenvik:
"The gods provide in unusual ways, particularly to those of us in their service, but I never would have imagined my most experienced and generous guide to the capital would be one such as the famous, or rather infamous, Grafin Sorenvik."
Henrik Osmont:
"I can say that the Viridian Order seems to provide a point of consistency in our ever-unusual capital, particularly one Ser Osmont who is as much a standard bearer of his order as any story."
Kreiger Von Karlisle:
"The work of a celate is not unlike the tending of a garden. Finding a seed of potential, nurturing it, protecting it from the harshness of the world. I am excited to learn from one so devoted to it."
Ignac Lavis:
"Through all these tumultuous times I think the hope of the faithful supports me as much as I do it. It should be I offering Mister Lavis my thanks."
Ishika:
"It has been an enlightening endeavor, finding common ground in this city of so many. In fact, I believe I have learned more from disagreement than agreement."
Melvena:
"... I saw something terrible today."
Joules Donay:
"I think one must always keep an open mind when walking in the path of the Great Way. She is certainly unlike those with whom I've strode alongside in the past, but does not lack in sense of duty."
Aphelos:
"No matter where I may go, it seems there are always wicked things."
Erwin Braunschweiger:
"There are things I dare not write about even to myself… I fear tonight that the greatest threats to our holy college come not from outside its faithful."
Myka:
"While a celate has many friends and allies, none deserve such trust as our colleagues. Celate Myka has been a constant source of guidance and reinforcement through the great deal of challenges and questions that have arisen in my short time here."
Dante Salvatore:
"Yes, all things can be forgiven, but one must wish to atone before such forgiveness can be achieved. I should have told him that, I will have to next I see him."
Ana Cervantez:
"The aspiration of us all is to better mirror the gods' virtues, but what of their vices that we so often join? I cannot truly fault Miss Cervantez when she shows such desire to be good even if she may err. For while she may stumble publicly, do we not all do so in the privacy of our own hearts? Perhaps then she is more honest than the lot of us."
Vittoria Von Rolanthe:
"Without conviction we are adrift in a sea of relativism and indifference. As for Lady Von Rolanthe, she is surely not adrift that is certain-- though perhaps some careful guidance to shore may be warranted."
Jhavartal:
"Apathy and selfishness are the ugliest of vices."
