Allow me to make a prediction: Most of the people on the server are going to disagree with me on this!

If your unaware, Capture the Flag was recently added to the server. There is a Portal in the middle of Silverwind that will take you there, where you can fight and die and such.

Here's my issue. If Massivecraft is indeed a RP server, does it make any sense that a magical portal in the middle of a port city can lead you to another place where you fight to the death but in reality ( normal Massive world) nothing happens? Bit of an immersion breaker, to be honest.

Unless you wish to back it up with "This is a wizard's illusionist test that creates a lifelike battle environment yadda yadda yadda", the CTF thing seems glaringly out of place in a medieval fantasy setting. I feel (espically as of late) that Massive is become more of a pvp server with a bit of RP on the side, instead of a RP server that also has pvp.

So yes, I myself would prefer it if people who wish to play CTF go to another server for that, there are plenty out there. If you wish to RP however, and have battles that don't just have to do with loot, then Massive is your server. Let's not mix the two.

I agree the same as the other two, however i do think it's a fun addition that should stay and maybe be edited a bit.

Capture the Flag is a form of battle training, as is PVP or grinding mobs. I find it difficult to believe that most people can't find a way for training for battle to be part of their role play. Treat it as a practice raid, require recruits to participate as part of their training. Role play the drill instructor ... Or don't participate if fighting isn't a part of your character's role. This is an RP server and each player has that choice.

In reading your post, your biggest complaint seemed to be that when people died, they didn't really die. On this server people recover from mortal wounds, it seems to be part of the magic of these worlds. I have heard that there are worlds where when you die, you are dead and can never exist again. If this be your wish, then I wish you well finding it.

I it is where the intrest lies, as long as pvp has it place then maybe RP and pvp can co-incide on the server :)

We are expanding the Massivecraft franchise to include minigames and in the future also different less or more heavy rp servers as well as different time settings.

I hear you with regards to the less then thought trough portal placement. I will present this to the others.

It seems to me that CTF is gauging an interest from the server and semi-testing the waters a bit.

Maybe an official site post or thread could clear up some things regarding the actuality of what's going on, lore-wise, here.

Let's start with in-game death:
*) You didn't actually die. Often, you weren't even mortally wounded and defeated. It's roleplay and so it's more likely that when you die via OOC means (such as being ganked while afk), then it's a part of the meta that you -can- place into the rp. If I die (and I do, several times a day), I've either been wounded, snuck away from a tactical defeat, or that was never me in the first place.

*)Some people may feel like the later is cheap, but I find it to be the best answer. I pretend that I witnessed a face-less NPC's death. That wasn't Alibarem that was eaten by the Orc. Ali was watching the Orc eat his friend from Edosaku. It was traumatizing. Death is a meta mechanism used in the game to represent loss.

Capture the Flag:
*) Let's assume that Capture the Flag has been incorporated by Silveredge as a means to work out aggressions, bring some entertainment to the people, and is even being used by some factions to gauge individual's efficiency in team-settings.

*)Ignore the OOC mechanics. I think we should just agree on what's actually happening as opposed to what our screen is telling us.

*) Then what's happening? Easy. We're abiding by rules. We can assume that an in-game death (the game being CTF, not MC) can be tried as murder. No killing allowed. Mayhap working with fixed weapons made of wood and/or rubber. We could even take it a step further and say that there are referees watching from outside, as well as medics and healers on standby. We could say that after you've been 'hit', you lose a point and after so many points, you're forced to walk back to the starting location for a brief time-out (the spawn). Thus, your death and respawn is actually an automated way of forcing your character to walk back and start over.

Losing RP and becoming PVP oriented:
*) I don't believe that ridding ourselves of pvp minigames is a step in the right direction. In fact, I believe the opposite, in which minigames can help breath fresh life into a game that can easily become stale.

*) We should instead focus on incorporating both roleplay into our meta-games, AND new ideas that encourage RP.

- What do I mean by that : Arenas could be seen as a gladiator type deal. Where official public challenges can be played, and I could see it evolving into this gambling type of deal where there are favored fighters and wages being placed on regular matches. That's why the stands are there, right?

- Also : Beside pushing rp into our current ooc minigames, we should work to create new events and games with an in-character theme. Jousting would be fun, were there ever a way to come up with that. I could see factions championing a player and pitting them against others in tournaments.

+ : Besides 'games' that include an RP theme, we should come up with more inclusive global story-lines. Jared, you were telling me the history of Mrs. Vampireface (forget her name x.X). That sounded awesome. I feel like we could unite more if there was a progressive story that could potentially engage all the Roleplay commmunity. Maybe a global threat, or the mods could have some special faction that's been terrorizing people and burning down villages.

I'm new so this is probably something you've all been doing, but if strengthening the RP community is a goal, then these are trends that need to continue. Right?

Long post, sorry.

I see how this could seem like we are favoring pvp in this situation, but allow me to put your minds to rest on this subject by explaining the reasoning behind why we decided to implement this plugin to the server.

1. Roleplay was one of the most important issue we knew we needed to satisfy, but it hasn't really been explained well enough yet.
We wanted large scale battles between factions to be waged in a, more or less, equal arena. With mcmmo skills disabled a "weaker" faction might take on a "powerful" faction in the arena yet still be equal. Also, each arena that has the plugin enabled will have a story to it or be part of a series of arenas that all detail past events in Massivecraft history. Large scale battles between ancient kingdoms or empires. And you get to re-live the events of the past.
Instead of factions raiding others when they are unprepared, you can take the fight to the arena and settle your differances there.

2. The pvp aspect is, of course, present in a large way in this plugin as we know that alot of people acctually go to other servers to pvp instead of comming back to Massivecraft after a server restart. We wanted to bring something more to Massivecraft that would sate the hunger for pvp more than the current arenas do.
The fact that everyone has the same weapons and armor to choose from then everyone is more or less equal. This would allow for more balanced and interesting gameplay within the arenas. If you were new to the server, you could still go in and kill the strongest people which normal arenas or raiding doesn't allow you to do. Also, there is the issue with you loosing all your things in a normal raiding situation. This is not present in the war plugin as each world features a seperate inventory that does not require you to bring anything to the battle other than your character and the will to survive.

3. The idea we are currently discussing is a background story as to how these arenas are accessible since some of them happened long ago. But also make a story and arenas that detail a more current event or something that is happening right now.
A roleplay story will be available soon.

To add a few final words on this plugin, I will take most of the responsibility for it's rather quick release without proper testing and stories having been made ready. We did, however, add it to the server so we could begin testing it and see how it worked together with the other plugins we have on Massivecraft. I was, along with other team members, spearheading this project to get it out to you as quickly as possible. This was a mistake on my part for which I apologize for. We should have taken some more time to make sure that all aspects of the plugin were in place and also the storylines were ready before releasing it to you guys.
I personally think this plugin will work very well for the more war-oriented factions that RP most of the time. Imagain this:

Large open plains lined with a forest on one side and a river rolling through it.
Two armies, ready to fight for what they believe in on either side.
Their generals giving the final orders and battle speeches before the carnage begins.

Battle commences, each side races forwards to fight their enemies, one platoon breaks out and heads off to the right flank ready to come in behind the enemy to take out their archers and leaders.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this plugin will let you do so much more in the aspect of RP wars. Broaden your minds and think about what this might let you do. Think big. Think battles that consist of 50v50 or 100v100 or more when server sharding is complete.

Here is an idea:
We could host an opening event using the CTF arena. It could be Faction vs. Faction.
Just a thought! :)

Firstly, I'd like to thank Mon and Belly for their responses, as I feel this is indeed a very important issue.

I don't feel justified to complain until, as Belly said, this RP backstory is put forth. At the moment, my original opinion stands, this is an out of place feature in the world that we have built. In time, I would hope that would change and as an extension, we will finally begin to make this server a server predominantly about RP, not PVP, which at the moment, it is.

As far as the idea "battles from Massive's past go" I would love a reenactment of the Lukkerdamm tragedy, and the other Baver battles. Would give new players a chance to witness Baver's horror first hand >:)

So i'm answering having only read the first post.

If you think ctf will make the server less RP then i'd disagree.. by setting up arenas and warbattlegrounds we give our pvp'ers a chance to go there instead of raiding your factions and killing your members. Wouldn't that make more chance for RP and less worry of getting Raided when holding an event?

My internet connection is too slow right now and I can't get on the server, but for me CTF on Massive sounds like a big mistake.

Zanip, no offence, but I don't think you're seeing the possibilities this plugin allows you. The RP aspect can be encorporated into it with ease. So I truly believe that Massive + War Plugin is a very good match.

While I agree that this portal to CTF (of all things) in spawn is kind of lacking in the RP factor, I also believe that it CAN be worked with to BENEFIT the RP factor.

Right now, it's still in the early testing phase. It can eventually be a fantastic addition to the MassiveCraft that we all know and love. You just have to have a little bit of patience... Give it time.

I have faith in the concept.

Massivecraft is a provider of entertainment, we try to cater to a very large population that is also very diverse. We are trying to improve and emphasize rp more lately, but alot people joined the server in the past for PVP. It is unfair to the people who made the server what it is to completely shut out new fun gameplay for them.

I have had a word with cayorion, and the portals will become more abstract in the future. The silverwind portal room is temporary, we are currently modeling a concept where you can reach the lobby trough the use of a command, to emphasize it is not part of the current Massivecraft universe.

That crap is DOPE.

I still have a problem with the idea of pvp without RP, so I am eager to see the changes to the current system. If the "people who made the server what it is" your reffering to are the same shitheads that ruined Tax's RP event not long ago, then I strongly disagree more reckless pvp "fun" should be given to them.

So basically Monmarty, your saying people like Stven, Insidious, and Mtoby made the server what it is.
