Ok, so something I find really weird on Massivecraft are cross-gender characters. Simply a character of the opposite gender as the player. There is a simple poll whether or not you find them weird, and leave a comment of why you chose your decision. I just find cross-gender characters because... well it should be self-explanatory.

I don't find it werid, because that is the point of Role Playing- to be someone who are not. You can make a character with different personality, backgrounds, skills, and wealth. All that but not genders? That notion seems weirder for me. If you have to stick with what you are then the majority of the server would have to play asocial teenagers.

I find it weird, but I'm not judging. I just don't think that I could pull it off. But I'm not saying not to.

What's really strange is people that try to pick up (normally underage) girls online, which is what most people that have made this type of thread tries to do.

Be what you want to be on a place were no one can judge. For some people Massive and other rp servers and stuff are the only places for people to truly be themselves without fear of being shunned by society.

So... I made an interesting character that is a strong, vicious, and sharp character.

It is a girl.

I am a straight white male.

The only issue I have with making a character of the other gender is that it's a pain to get right.

That's why I did it.

@Korgex12

I play male characters because they offer different opportunities, and I'm trying to be as different from myself as possible. While I understand how some people find that as weird, I really hate when people have to vocalize it in a negative way.

People thought I was a guy for the longest time and that was really funny.

Just to clarify, I don't mind if you do this, and I wouldn't stop role playing with you or anything like that if you do enjoy doing it. I just get way too into the mindset of my characters, and I really don't want to think like a girl when I am brainstorming on how to progress my character.
Like many have said above. This is a roleplay server. A clean slate where you can be and do whatever you want.

Wait...
What's wrong with thinking like a girl?

one of my characters is literally a walking plant without an explicit gender
an old one was a snakeman
i don't get what's weird about playing a character of the opposite gender, really
most of my recent ones have been female, but i used to play more male characters, and might well do so again soon
so nah, it's not really self-explanatory what you find weird

I tease my friend lizmun, because I thought he was a girl for the first 4 months I knew them'

Because I joke that they never play any male characters, but then they list all their male chars which he incidentally rarely plays.

Also for future notice: I really hope people don't dig too deep on someone finding cross-gender chars "weird".

It is weird, but that doesn't mean its bad.

Being weird isn't bad, its just a neutral adjective as far as I'm concerned, but if people find it negative: then whatever'.

Honestly for the longest time I thought there was a different mindset on both genders so I felt awkward even in Yanar territory because I felt the need to get it absolutely right. (still awkward tho)

There's a super ton of positivism on this thread, so I'm going to come down on it with cold reality.

  • Guys playing Girls are stigmatized, especially when their characters attempt to get into relationships with Guys playing Guys. I've witnessed first hand people OOC messaging others with "Dude, that's a guy, he must be gay and trying to erp with you". This is a reality that will occur and most cross gender roleplayers eventually have to deal with.
  • A large minority (majority) of Guys playing Girls oversexualize their characters to promiscuity or emote a bit too much with breasts for social comfort. This usually results in the response above, as people become second hand uncomfortable and feel some sort of social need to "protect" people who are ignorant to who is behind the keyboard.
  • A large minority of Girls playing Guys often make really well rounded characters, who initially come off really authentic and realistic, but slowly slip back into a very stereo typically weak character. This doesn't necessarily imply that girls can't play strong male roles, rather it implies that the success rate of that is exceptionally low, or is often a slippery slope that goes down.
What does this all mean? It doesn't mean that cross gender roleplay is not-done. There have been more than adequate examples of people who did a really good job, myself not included. I attempted to play female characters a couple of times and could never quite get the hang of it, largely because I saw a double standard when certain characters dealt with me, because they knew that behind the keyboard was a gay dude. Like any roleplay experience that is unconventional or unpopular, it comes with it's own challenges that (while not discouraged) I believe anyone should at least be aware of.

It provides a faint sociopathic pleasure to see how different people act when they think you are a girl OOC. If you ever doubt feminism (even 3rd wave), I sugget you give it a go.

But in other terms, any male character I ever had turned to be an author avatar soon enough which barred development and entertainment.

And think about it, if it weren't for us cross-gender lad-to-lass RPers, you'd have a 4:1 male to female ratio for characters due to the statistics of online communities.

Literally this is so right, I have a load of Human characters, male and female and when I play as a female character, no matter how generic or boring she may be, she is approached %500 more than any of my male characters and ends up engaging in so much more rp. This hurts because I'll make male characters to get out of my comfort zone and I will not end up in any rp because there are 1000 insecure 14 year old boys who are making a B-line to the cutsie female character with massive eyes and cute hair.

HELLO I AM A GIRL IRL AND I PLAY EXCLUSIVELY MALE CHARACTERS

legit. i literally cannot play female characters it pains me so much.

but anyways, whenever i try to it will result in me being extremely uncomfortable in my position and just getting out of it. i've toyed with the idea of having a tomboyish character and might go through with it in the future. if it works then, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for now i shall stick to being a guy ic c;

@Suzzie ALSO I HEAR YOU SUZ, I GET MISTAKEN AS A DUDE ALL THE TIME but it's probably also because i sound slightly androgynous in skype calls, if at least a somewhat deep voice for a girl oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think it's weird at all. I don't do it myself, (althought I have).

The only thing I find rather annoying is people who play the opposite gender purely for erotic purposes. I don't have anything against that, it's fine, but not in Massivecraft where public erotic content is not only forbidden but also discouraged.

Guess I am one of those insecure 14 year old B-line boys Muahahahaha!!!

Anyways I always wanted to try out to play a female char to diversify my RP experience since sometimes both of my male chars can be so similar in personality it's just frustrating to me at times like they are the same person but just with a different name and different looks while I'm starting to have more differentiation between my chars with some of my new additions, I would like to do something radically different by roleplaying as a female character and step out of my RP comfort zone... Though I would need some tips on that..

(P.S. Regarding the issue of social stigmatization issue regarding males rping as females, If you ask me a few months ago my response would be sth immature like: "WTF you are a guy and you have a girl skin?" So I can definitely see that stigmatization is definitely an issue that crossgender rpers will face and can be annoying :P I can simply say that it is a shame, but oh well anyways I'd love to meet you lot in the rp scene whether crossgender or not LOL)

I have had first had experience with this, I play a female character, and have several times come into situations were they were being romantically pursued by male characters. Now at that point it really bothered me OOC because I personally am not attracted to men, one of the big reasons I play females is because of my love for the female form. Because of this I made my female character a lesbian, so that I didn't have to deal with it or feel uncomfortable OOC. Although it kinda feels strange to admit it.

I also felt that my character shouldn't have to be alone forever because the person playing them was uninterested in having them in a straight relationship with a character of the opposite sex.

Offtopic: But wtf does white have to do with it? lol 0.O
I was more pointing it out for absolute clarification of the situation-- Often in the social groups I involve myself with it is more... It just goes as habit when stating sexual preference/orientation. It is a habit that I myself have no need for, but in my original emotions (which were rather charged by the silliness of the og post), I didn't look over it for anything that good be perceived as odd or not needed.

Such as stating that I'm white.

Which in hindsight is not needed.

oh...You're one of those people...
There's a simple way to deal with insults and shit, play shooters the community is mostly amazing in that toxic assholery...
But repeating simple points others have said,It's fun to see people react when they think you're x or y,people stick in their comfort zones too much and you shouldn't give a shit.

I care about my public image. Let's not clutter another discussion thread with our differing views regarding social situations... Again. Lol.

plenty of people do it and it's not weird unless you make it weird

what are you talking about? he made a comment that he admitted was not needed and originally was intended as a joke, so it looks like you're just arguing for the sake of arguing

And here we see someone who needs to stop waving such edge and calm the hell down

and @Parz1vol, I'm sorry. But I had to do this, I cannot resist it.

I feel like a quick fix to this would be finding a male character being controlled by a female.. Could be quite enlightening, I feel. Tell eachother what the other was doing wrong, and improve on the character as things progress.. Wait, why am I replying t..
Scampers off.

I myself don't typically play characters that are dudes, because I have trouble with that. If I try to roleplay as a guy, they will act like a woman. But that's just me. I definitely don't think it's weird though, unless someone is making a character only because they want to play as a sexy elf of the opposite gender. That's definitely strange. Honestly, I think roleplay should be a way to become someone else. I like roleplay communities because no one is gonna judge you. I don't want my character to be just like me, I have to act like myself every day!

@Lizmun does a phenomenally well done job with his female characters to the point that they seem real to me. He is truly fabulous and I absolutely adore his character Abigail, who acts feminine and more importantly, feels real. As if Lizmun was a girl xD

I am a female, and play only females as all the males I have drawn, written, and created are extremely feminine. The only male I have written about that wasn't extremely feminine was Eric Black in Elizabeth's Life Chronicles fanfiction but he was created as a papa bear role model and best friend for my character, Elizabeth. (@Film_Noir has credit for the entire Black family. Not me, him. He's the cool one <3)
I really have to applaud those who can convincingly play a male character. Perhaps its because I am very feminine (despite my masculine-like voice lol) in my real life, that it makes it challenging to play male characters, to the point I've just given up.

Why is this even a question that someone has to ask? I mean, unless you're the kind of person who feels weird knowing you're ERPing with another guy playing a girl or something, then why would you ever care?

Idk why you randomly started talking about picking up girls online lol.

Obviously xD ^
