"Life. We use this term so loosely, what truly defines life? It is a question that has been asked and pondered upon throughout the ages, yet nobody truly knows the answer. Some people define life as meaningless, just a process that we all share. We breathe the same air as one another, eat, sleep, laugh and cry; just like we're designed to do. Some people would say that we're all working towards something great, that every life has purpose and that we'll one day make a better place for the lives that come after our own. Sometimes, we think too much, our minds are racing with questions, answers, we feel emotions and can't express or describe them just as we want to.
Life, for those reading this is something more, and less than what we believe. Some people strive for power and money, others strive for love and happiness. The truth is, we will never truly know what we are doing here. Speculation leads us to believe that life is a series of events that will finally lead us to what lies beyond, whether religion dictates our souls rest eternally in a place not yet truly explored or that we come back to try again, to life as we once did and to feel every emotion, every hardship and triumph just the same. The truth in the matter is, we are all lost in life. People look for the best jobs, great income and fancy houses. Some people want friends, companionship and care from others.
Life is a series of hard events that can break us all, what we do dictates who we are and tells others what we strive to be. In honesty, life is not about money, power, greed or even finding purpose. Life is about spending the time we have with those we love, people should never want what they don't have, but make time for the things we possess, they should spend time with the people closest to them and live life to the fullest. What we want is irrelevant, what we need is all that matters. Love, happiness, sadness, kindness and most of all, compassion. These are what make people who they are and what they will eventually become, and in wise words, our actions decide not only our own fates but the fates of those millions of others that we see every single day, working towards their goals in life and spending their time how they deem it worthy. All life matters, to live is to suffer, yet it is far greater than to never have lived at all.
I know how foolish it must seem, that these words are all just generated by a mind that could come out with some of the silliest things you've ever heard. Still, to take into account, the words of another that is pouring their heart out, that is true selflessness. Sometimes all we have to do is stop for a minute, listen to the voices around us and decide, never be unsure in your actions; but to decide to make a change. We spend our lives trying to make ourselves happy, in the hopes that one day it'll all turn out good. What we do, it is wrong.
Sometimes, all it takes is to make someone else smile and to let someone else feel joy. Sometimes, all it takes is kindness, compassion, love and that special, warm feeling that keeps us going throughout the day, every day. That feeling isn't just something that we can make happen on our own, it is a feeling that should be shared with others. Inspire the blood to pound and the heart to leap higher, share your happiness and remember that every smile you put on someone else's face is what truly counts in life."
He grinned some, seating himself back at his desk and taking in a deep breath before running his hands through his greyed hairs. He removed his small, rounded glasses and stared out unto the people gathered around the lecture hall before him and gave a small chuckle, wiping away a few tears.
"I realize, that in my old age I am finally coming to the end of my life. You, each and every person in this room today have one thing to take away from this. Life is sacred, let your emotions run wild and remember to share a smile just once, if only once in your life. Share your happiness with someone else, show them that you care, teach them compassion and kindness, that you might make a better life for them and that they might do the same for you."

I realize, as I write this story at 4am and the fact that I've had little sleep over the past few days can account for my poor writing quality. I do however, find that my emotional state when writing like this can be just as warm as when I see someone else smiling. I hope, truly that you can take from this what I take from the smiles of the billions of other people we share this planet with and that you remember that it only takes a shred of care, a dose of love and to share with others, compassion above all; to make someone else's day.
With thanks & a fair amount of compassion,
Callum James Taylor.
