Ill be using easy numbers to work with as to make the working out easier. I do not know the answer if you do please share it with me.

You and two friends go out for a drink, the bill comes to $30. The waiter then checks the bill again and realizes that it actually only comes to $25. Realizing this the waiter decides to take $5 from the original $30 and he gives you and your friends each $1 keeping $2 for himself.

So this means that you and your friends only paid $9 each because the waiter each gave you $1 dollar back , don't forget the waiter still kept $2 for himself. So $9+$9+$9+$2=$29 not $30 which is the total you are meant to come to. Does anybody here know where the $1 dollar went as it is driving me crazy.

Isn't it $8 + $8 + $9 = $25 (Which they paid) He then gives them each a dollar so $9 + $9 + $10 = $28 (so that's their money)
Then the $2 dollars she kept. $30 dollars, simple. (I think it's confusing because one of the one dollars splits into 0.3333333 so that they each get the same amount.)

No it wouldn't be $8+$8+$9 because the waiter gives them each one $1 back from the $10 , $10-$1=$9.
So back to square one ?

They each payed 10
10+10+10=30
Then the waiter took 5 off
30-5=25
He gave 3 dollars back to you and your friends and kept 2 for himself
3+2=5
There for the 30 dollars is made up of the 25 you should have paid, the 3 the waiter gave back and the 2 he kept
25+3+2=30
Or if you want to work out how much each paid then
8.33+8.33+8.34+3+2=30
Or
8.33+8.33+8.34=30-3-2=25
So the dollar didn't go anywhere

That is essentially what I said but I gave one person an extra dollar because I didn't want recurring money :P

He gives them each back a full dollar though.[DOUBLEPOST=1364763103,1364763059][/DOUBLEPOST]or am i not understanding correctly ?

The $5 dollars at the start cannot equally divide by the 3 people, hence the missing dollar is hidden in 3, 0.33333333's in what each person paid.

Thank you , would've helped my self esteem if you had taken longer to figure it out xD but thanks you two.

I know I just did it with more working out8-):P

Yes he gave them back a full dollar each (total of 3) but he should have given them back and total of 5
This means you need to add to dollars to the amount paid and 2 dollars to the correct price
8.33+8.33+8.34=25
8.33+8.33+8.34+2=25+2=27
9+9+9=27
This means the amount that was paid was 9 dollars each but It should have been 8.33 each (with one paying an extra cent)[DOUBLEPOST=1364763527][/DOUBLEPOST]Its so annoying when you post something that makes no sense because someone posted before right before you.
