"I want to protect them. Not just from monsters but from the things people can't always see— worries, bad dreams, and restless nights."

— Ser Bedhead

🌟THE KNIGHT LIGHT🌟
Ser Bedivere Somnus

Core Concept | "Does it know that we love it? That the universe is kind?"
1730869687709.webp
  • Ser Bedivere Somnus (also known as "the Knight Light" or "the Good Knight" or "Ser Bedhead") is a Star-born of the Mother.
    • His Orion name is Star-child of the Misty-eyed Maiden, drifting away to an old lullaby.
  • His theme revolves around lullabies, bedtime stories, and getting a good night's rest.
    • Bedivere's appearance is a big focal point for his concept despite being rather simplistic! His heavily-armored form creates a daunting silhouette… but upon a closer inspection, one can see how the holes of his helm resemble silly little stars through which starlight projects such shapes upon any surface he turns to face (It makes him look like a night light!) and that the cape draped across the knight's shoulder appears to be nothing more than a woolly blanket. His star-crown is a garland made of starry lavender.
  • As an Aelrrigan knight, Bedivere aspires to do good for the people of Aloria. More aptly, he wishes to grant some peace of mind to those in need of it, offering his aid and protection, so that everyone may afford a pleasant slumber at the end of the day. In turn, he hopes to earn the right to hear their stories; they make for good daydreams.
  • I imagine him to be quite passionate, though idealistic and impressionable. He may take most things at face value, especially when it comes to orders and requests, approaching each with utmost dedication! Overall, Bedivere is a kind person— a grateful person, even, who was raised in a small but loving piece of the world where he cherished every warm, peaceful night. Now, he wishes to give back to the world in its entirety.

Backstory & Plot Hooks | "and the universe said you are the daylight"
  • Bedivere was raised by a blacksmith in a remote village atop frosty Gallovian mountain peaks, a place where the stars seemed to commune with the land (in a poetic sense).
  • His caretaker had a mysterious curse that prevented them from falling asleep. It was not the worst suffering imaginable, but it did seem to make their mind age quicker.
    • The curse may have originated from an unnamed Arkon.
  • A cure for the curse seemed unlikely, but after Bedivere reached adulthood, he left the village in search of one. His caretaker's parting words to him were, "I have not slept in a long, long time, child, and so I have lost my yearning to. You need not spend the precious beginnings of your eternity like this, seeking a cure for me… But I beseech you: if you must travel for my sake, travel far and wide. Be a good knight and collect tales from all corners of the world. It will enrich you. When you've found a good story, come back and tell it to me. Perhaps that shall be the cure itself."
  • And so, Bedivere set out to travel across the kingdom of Regalia!
    • He has joined the ranks of the Aelrrigan Order, hoping to protect the common folk as well as expand his knowledge about magic— especially curses.
    • Operating primarily under the Penn Archwilio chapter, he often finds himself on expeditions to faraway lands. For this reason, he has not entirely familiarized himself with Regalia's main city.

Extra Lore & Trivia | "and the universe said you are not alone"
  • He tells the best bedtime stories.
  • His singing could use some work, though.
  • Bedivere's armor may be partially forged with the very same Orionite fragments that he descended upon the land with.
  • Following the trend that the Orion tend to fear things that have to do with the poetic endings of their namesake, Bedivere has a rather ironic fear of falling asleep, which extends into his poor habit of neglecting to meditate. He is somewhat of an "insomniac" in this regard.
  • Every so often, Bedivere can be caught staring off into space, seemingly unattuned to his surroundings. These moments are often swiftly followed by a loud "C L A N G - ! ! !" that resonates from the impact of Bedivere's gauntlet meeting his helm. His strange brand of insomnia, as one might wager, is ill-suited for a knight. Sluggish movements and an unclear head can lead to dire consequences, after all. Therefore, he has adopted a nightly routine to circumvent these obstacles: when afforded the proper time and place, Bedivere will transcribe his most recent experiences as well as the stories others have shared with him onto paper, allowing them to guide him through the meditative process.
  • He also enjoys the occasional cup of coffee!
  • Bedivere can be rather strange at times, particularly in how he might shed tears over the most mundane of miseries, yet handle morbid matters with remarkable calm.
  • Once upon a time, there was a feast thrown in Bedivere's honor after he had bested a terrible beast plaguing a small town. Amid the celebration, he was offered a mysterious brew that he later believed to have been laced with a magical potion. None the wiser at the time, though, he drank it, became incredibly intoxicated, and blacked out.

That night, he fell into a dream. It was a long and incredibly vivid dream— so convincing that he never suspected he wasn't in the waking world. As far as he knew, he had awoken and continued to live out what felt like years, decades even. In the dream, Bedivere achieved his heart's utmost desires: curing his caretaker's curse, becoming a renowned knight, sharing in sorrows and joys alike with his brethren, and, at last, reaching the fairy-tale ending he had longed for.

But when he awoke, the life he had cherished vanished with the morning light. He was left with the broad strokes of those midnight memories, and tears welled in his starry eyes for all that had never truly been. In a world full of real hardships, Bedivere's greatest sorrow became the simple act of waking up.

It was a strange sort of pain, to grieve for a fantasy... and yet, perhaps fate had shown him kindness in its cruelty, revealing what could have been to prepare him for what may come.

Bedivere carried onward, treasuring the fragments of a life he would never truly regain yet couldn't fully forget. Grateful in his own way, he believed he had been spared from a first grief rooted in reality, offering instead a more gentle, bittersweet heartbreak.

Still... waking from a dream too sweet leaves a lingering mist in one's eyes, doesn't it? The strange experience sowed into Bedivere a gentle detachment from life's hardships, for he felt that few pains could compare to losing the life he once believed was his.
