Well, here I am. I intended to make this thread earlier, but whatever. I started a hardcore world, and then I died. Then I made two more, and died there too. This is the fourth one, and I don't plan on dying. I'll post screenshots and other records and plans here, maybe to keep me on task enough to follow through with this world all the way to the End (which I may go to). At the time I'm posting this I've lasted up to day 13. My record's 22. So far I have:
    • Got a house
    • Got a good mine shaft going
    • Got a supply of iron and coal that's unlikely to dry up soon
    And here's the pics:
    2017-09-03_15.38.56.png
^ House. As you may see from the big log post near the back, I'm making an expansion.
    2017-09-03_15.39.20.png
^ Better view of planned expansion. It's gonna be two stories.
    2017-09-03_15.40.29.png
^ Planning to set up a mining base here, and a minecart up to the entrance.
    2017-09-03_15.41.05.png
^ As you can see, I have a fine supply of lava. Will look for diamonds later.

Don't expect regular updates, sometimes I forget then I remember again. If I don't post for a really long time just comment something here and I'll get posting.

Yeah, I've started carrying around a stack or so of dirt or cobble in my hotbar to quickly make a barrier against the arrows.

Oh no this wasn't gravel or sand this involves red stone and a few pistons.

I finally built my base it was a mountain fort kinda, with walls and rooms burrowed inside the stone, it was nice one bedroom with a whole kitchen/living area. Outside was the wall, a six block high spruce wood wall, with fence to keep the spiders out. And my general farm and chicken area. So I decided to try something new and make a redstone door.I think it was the second time checking to see if it was closed is when I got trapped.. and died.

Minecraft's hardcore mode is a wonderful cathartic experience in beautiful yet terrifying existentialism.

You are placed into a world, a world you can only ever experience once, and that no-one will likely ever experience again. A truly unique and wonderful world that you have only this one chance at. Yet death in Hardcore mode can come easily and quickly. Rarely do you die in some brave or heroic manner. Much more likely you fall off your roof one day, or accidentally step into lava. You stay out too late and are shot by a skeleton. Or you're blown up by a creeper. It's unceremonious, uneventful, and sudden.

You could stay inside, lock yourself in a room with a food source and be safe. You could survive this way almost forever. Yet eventually, you will lose the world. It could be something breaks into your safebox. Or more likely, you lose interest and forget the save. Besides, remaining inside is dull. You want to do something, accomplish something. And yet the game gives you no direction. There is no reason to do anything. No win state. You alone are left with the choice of what to do.

Do I build a cool base?
Do I try and slay the boss monsters?
Do I get all the achievements?
    Do I explore this world?
    Do I protect this village?
Do I live a quiet life in a small farmhouse?
Do I go hunt as many monsters as I can?

All of these choices are yours. There is no correct answer. _Torivor chose to go to the Nether, possibly because they enjoy the danger and are willing to take the risk to get rewards. Bearacuda chose to try and build a piston door, possibly because they like making cool or complex bases, it gave them a sense of accomplishment. Yet neither of these people truly 'won' Hardcore. In the end they both ended up dead, their worlds gone. The work they put in for naught but a good laugh and fond memories.

And so one must ask themselves, is there any point? I began by breaking and placing blocks, and in the end I am still breaking and placing blocks. When I die, I will not see how the world progresses without me. And in the end it is simply one hardcore world lost among the hundreds of others who have had the same experience. And yet, to truly enjoy Hardcore mode one must overcome this problem.

In the end your choices and actions aren't imbued with any grand cosmic meaning. They aren't held as a pedestal to your accomplishments. Like the Buddhist practice of sand mandala (sand painting) your work is blown away when it is done, never to be seen again. And yet, you have made something beautiful. Not to look back on, but to enjoy now, in the moment. You do not choose to do things because you must, or should. You do things simply because you can. You must make your own meaning, and value your achievements based on that meaning as you do them.

It is both a beautiful but also frightening thing. We must decide how to spend each day of our Hardcore worlds. We are not responsible to anyone other than ourselves. Eventually it will tragically, but without fanfare, be taken from us. And in the end what we do is a reflection of ourselves. It is perhaps best put by Existentialist thinker Jean-Paul Sartre.
"Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does."

    Enjoy the Hardcore world Beetletoes!

I have never seen someone look so deeply into the soul of a game based on nothing but blocks and basic AI. It's a deeply intense and frightening thing but genius at the same time.

Nice speech, you could be a preacher one day. But lmao I went to the nether to get blaze powder and glowstone for healing potions because I was playing hardcore mode on another server where you can't regenerate naturally.

Tips I found useful. (emphasis on "I")

The things a Bucket can do
A bucket of water or fire pot is always good to keep at hand, if your ever in a sticky situation these can be live saving items, +1 for Water bucket for doubling as a traveling system on long drops.

    Priest Villagers
One of the most common villagers this guy can help you a lot, when you get his trading level to 3, you gain the access to buy GlowStone (1-4) for one or two emeralds making pots stronger and last longer, aka (Water Breathing 3:00 > 8:00)

    Chickens Chickens Chickens
Forget cows, pigs, and other animals Chickens are your safest bet as a food source, they give off materials to make Arrows, a whole chicken to satisfy your hunger, and their own little 10/100 chance spawn egg, also to add they are easy to breed and small in size making for just a small pen needed.

    Nether Better
The Nether, your bane of existence but also one of the greatest resources in the game, including, potion making and an infinite source of gold nuggets from Pig men, Rule one of the Nether, Don't F*ck with the Pigmen. They will F*ck you royally, so build a makeshift DR base, basic walls to protect you and give you ample room to attack to farm the group of pigmen. Potion make is another thing, after you find a Nether base your honestly set. Just stay safe and prepare for the Nether before you go.

    Stock up
Its good to have an over abundance of food and items, be greedy and make enough to feed a family of 7. Your one goal is to survive so do so give no sheer lack of will to this game, once you turn your back you'll be bamboozled.

    Mountain Men
A mountain is like your big bro, he's bulky and protective. Mountains have a built in home waiting for you to carve it out, strong in walls and great in protection. Theres also the fact it can't burn down. +1 for a mine already built in.

    Day 22
This is the day I died in my first world. I'll survive it in this one.
The village has been contacted, and traded with.
    A cave was discovered.
    The farm is going well.
This will be a good life.
I have plans to explore the odd rock spire to the west of my house.
    The mining base is beginning.

Beginnings of the farm. I don't have a solid number but it's more than twenty crop blocks.
