Hmmmm A hacking group called Anoymous, and they hack stuff? Well they could be causing Chaos since they are making people really pissed.

I'm quite unsure on my standpoint regarding Anon. On the one side, they expose what they deem to be corruption in governments and have even exposed paedophile rings. On the other hand, what they are doing is illegal and many of the principal leaders of their large scale projects have been arrested as a result. Meh, it's an ambiguous area; depends on whether you believe you can fight injustice in every way possible. I would say that they often have good intentions, but their attitude and methods aren't overly pleasant from the perspective of some.

I don't think people should really vote / comment if they don't know who Anonymous are or what they do / have done.

You have a group of people hacking governments because they feel like they should have a right to for "justice."
Which to me makes them feel bad, however, it's hacking the governments that can be a "good" thing too. If a government is seriously serving constant injustice, you've got a group that can sniff them out and let the world know that they do that, with all of their personal information, so others can stop them.

When anonymous started, they were trolls of /b/.

Simple as, they were doing it 'For teh lulz'.

Then it went mainstream, and during 'project chanology', it gained a lot of attention and average every-day people, most of which had never even heard of 4chan partook. This is when it changed from a force of 'Bad' to a force of "good".

(Old anonymous hates the new one, if it means anything.)

Vigilante group of black hat hackers who (more often than not) cause more problems than they fix. With that in mind, I do believe we need the right to question our government, we do /not/ have the right to DDos them, or other governments/companies, to prove a point.

Bad. Hands down. Unfortunately, of course. I did respect some of the child pornography website attacks, but then I stopped respecting them once they supported the Occupy Wall Street Movement. *facepalm*

Well they helped solve a rape case, and they do stand for some good things, I think just how they get it done is a little bit extreme.

Well they do certain good things, but a bunch of masked men trying to resolve issues in society... could most likely turn out to be criminals in the end that are just looked for excuses to continue their own gain in fortune.

In my opinion I think that they are doing good but seeing as what they are doing is not within legal boundaries that would cause most people to think negatively apon them

I believe that they are good, but it does not matter for we are ALL Anonymous, that's the idea, they are all who believe in Liberty, not just hackers, but all of us.

Also, remember this: We are Legion. United as one, divided by none. We do not forgive, we do not forget. We are Anonymous. Expect us.

Old Anon, I'm down with. The cp website raids and exposing along with the digital ruffing up of those whom deserved it or peeved them off. New Anon... This is pretty much them. image.jpg

But, aside from any major disruptions they and the other /b/rothers out there that fight for digital rights.

Well, that's my bitcoin on the matter.

Majority of Anonymous.

They're forcing their political views on people, which is bad, but some of those views are just, which is good. It's not really a yes/no sort of thing, almost everyone will think they're a bit of both.

Anonymous isn't a concrete group or "organisation" per-se, so it's immensely difficult to pass judgement on Anonymous as a whole. Members can join just by stating that they're part of Anonymous, and leaving would go completely un-noticed.

Not to mention the conflicting interests of the different groups that make up Anon; you've got people like LulzSec that post pictures of fast-flashing black and white squares on epilepsy forums. Equally, you have new groups, such as MalSec, who are more interested in fighting censorship and whatever they deem to be unjust.

Holding a poll / thread on these individual groups would still be someone what unfair / unreliable, as, just like the Anonymous structure itself, members don't necessarily conform or agree to the majority of the group's actions.

I personally believe that there are good and bad things about Anonymous. Here are some facts that I paraphrased after doing some research.
  • Anons lie when they have no reason to lie. They weave vast fabrications as a form of performance. Then they tell the truth at unexpected and unfortunate times, sometimes destroying themselves in the process. They're unpredictable, really.
  • They're small groups of hackers who stole the limelight experimenting with new ways of being in the world.
  • They oppose internet censorship and control, which I personally think is necessary to a degree (control).
  • The group's few rules include not disclosing one's identity, not talking about the group, and not attacking media. They commonly use the tagline, "We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."
  • Because Anonymous has no leadership, no action can be attributed to the membership as a whole. Some have criticized media coverage that presents the group as well-organized or homogenous, and some have written that there was no single leader pulling the levers, but a few organizational minds that sometimes pooled together to start planning a stunt, basically.
  • I personally characterize it as a movement. Anyone can be a part of it. It's a crowd of people, a nebulous crowd of people, working together and doing things together for various purposes.
  • Anonymous has no strictly defined philosophy, and internal dissent is a regular feature of the group.
There are more facts about Anonymous, but my opinion does not affect you as individuals as much as your opinion does.

You make fair points, however, censorship of the internet should not be tolerated on any level (in my opinion). Censorship of the internet can do more harm than good. Free media news sources, as in not mainstream media, shows things that are hidden from the people and the people should know about. They fight any anti-free acts. Like Op Avenge Assange when they shut down PayPal amazon and so on after cutting off funds for WikiLeaks. In that operation they were protecting government transparency, that is the ultimate goal of activism. And they are Hacktivists. Now, what I'm saying is only my opinion, everyone has the right to their own mind. Some things I say might spark controversy, but, I just want to put my opinion out there for you all to hear.

With some of the fabrications produced by both media and misunderstandings of situations, it's hard to get the truth. One of Anonymous' many philosophies is that if you want the truth, you should get it straight up.

Anonymous does this by hacking.

Anonymous aren't all skilled hackers, some are complete skids. But Anonymous does retrieve this information just like Julian Assange did with his WikiLeaks website.

They also enjoy proving points. Ominous YouTube videos and the like. they don't like organizations with conflicting views. They DDoSed the Westboro Baptist Church websites, and also the Church of Scientology's websites. Old news, but still quite interesting for those who haven't heard of the attacks.

One of their more prominent philosophies is that what they do may not be legally correct, but they consider it ethically correct.

Which sparks another debate for another thread :)
