So! You are in need of a Minecraft skin; either for your roleplay character, or one you can regularly use
while grinding at factions work, or something else. Maybe you've already found someone who skins that has a style you really like, and you want to commission them to make something for you. But how do you go about this? It's important to make sure your interactions with whom you're commissioning are pleasant, so here's a little guide to help you with that, as well as some tips and things to consider towards the end.

  1. Provide references.
  • This is absolutely essential. It is really frustrating as a skinner to try and decipher what you are wanting through words. Long paragraphs tend to cause their eyes to gloss over and they won't want to read all of it. Short descriptions paired with reference images are best. Images needed include (for humanoids):
    • Gender representation/leaning
    • Preferred model (Alex or Steve)
    • Hair color, length, and style
    • Skin and eye color
    • Clothing, colors,
  • For non-humanoid skins, it's situational, but just try to be AS DESCRIPTIVE AS POSSIBLE.
  • IMGUR ALBUMS HELP! Instead of clogging your dms with lots of images, compile them into an Imgur album! This is optional of course, but super helpful, and appreciated.
2. Once the skinner has received your references, try not to rush.
  • I understand, it's really exciting that you're getting something customly made for yourself. But try not to rush the skinner, or be too pushy. You can definitely ask for a time estimate, but poking them every thirty minutes is really going to drain their will for the skin. A good time frame is every couple or few days to check in.
  • The skinner SHOULD send you updates, also called WIPs. These are usually work-in-progress versions of the skin, such as the base of it unshaded. This is an opportunity for you to correct anything you don't want/don't like (please be nice when making corrections). After shading is done, try to refrain from requesting more changes.
3. Payment
  • This is something you should typically discuss with the skinner beforehand, but always make sure to actually pay them. Some skinners prefer PayPal or Venmo for real life money, some prefer Regals, some prefer other goods such as a server donation (Premium or Supremium ranks) or something of the like. Just always be prepared and have your payment at the ready when the skin is complete. Don't try to trick them out of their worth.
4. Enjoy, and show it off!
  • Once the skinner has received payment and you have received your skin, ENJOY! Recommend the skinner to your friends if you really enjoyed working with them, and wear your skin proud, show it off.

  • Monotone outfits are hell for some skinners. Black on black, white on white, absolute pain and suffering. It may look cool in the reference image, but it doesn't translate well onto a skin. It does work sometimes though, so just show your reference image to the skinner and ask if they're comfortable with it.
  • Don't send an overly/needlessly complicated reference and expect every single detail to translate onto the skin. There is only so much a skinner can cram into a limited amount of pixels!
  • Allow for personal interpretation from time to time. You as a commissioner have every right to want something in a specific way, but if you have no preference, allowing some leeway to the skinner once and a while to design a portion of it for you is a good thing. Don't just leave the whole design up to them alone, as this is overwhelming and a little stressful.
  • BE NICE!!!
  • If the skinner in question has their own artist's thread on the forums, and an application template, always follow it. Chances are they have it that way for a reason, whether it is for ease of access, organization, etc.
  • Ask if the skinner's commissions slots are open beforehand. If they are not, let them know you'd like to be notified when they will be.
  • Keep an eye out for skin auctions! You can get some pretty baller outfits that are already pre-made. All you have to do is bid and then pay the due amount if you get it.
