A Mother's Fear

Merina laid in the darkness, her lover lying besides her in a deep slumber, the other Claith unaware of the fear seeping off her. Her gaze glanced to the shadows around her, searching for the boogeyman just out of sight. She squeezed her eyes closed a moment before a creak in the woodwork, the house settling in the night, startled her back to watching the darkness as she pulled herself from bed with a gasp.

Her eyes were wide in the cool air of the house that followed after her like a ghost from the past as she moved towards the door. Merina closed her eyes a moment, calming herself with a few breaths as she placed her hand on the knob before she twisted and darting back towards the cradle in the end of the room. Her fingers held tight to the wood of the cradle as her face paled, twisting into an expression of absolute horror before the insomniac released a scream, her hands pressing to her mouth.

The man in the bed sat up with a start, confusion written over his face as he staggered from the bed and to Merina, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her to his chest.

"Merina?" The name was a whispered question against the curls that had fallen against the woman's cheek, his left hand lifting to brush the accusing lock from her face. The expression across the male was clear worry, fear even for what had caused her to scream as she had.

"Shane, my baby," she whimpered, glancing away from the towering Claith and instead to the empty cradle her youngest called home.

"Your baby?" Shane's gaze drifted to the cradle and he tightened his hold on Merina, resting his chin on her head. "Merina, he's with Ren, remember? You'll see him again tomorrow." The woman shook her head, fighting against the hold of her lover, which she eventually beat and stumbled back from.

"No-! I have to make sure he's okay! I.. I have to," the woman let out a brief sob suddenly, her hands pushing through her wild curls and then she snatched up Shane's coat that sat hanging off the desk in the corner of the room. She pulled it over her grey nightdress as Shane continued to try and persuade her otherwise.

"Merina, you can't go."

"I have to."

"What if you get hurt?"

"I'll be fine."

"It's dark, Merina! Don't go-"

"-I have to go, Shane!"

The woman gave him a last look, one marred with terror, before she went darting from the house with worn boots pulled haphazardly onto her feet. She raced through the streets, slowly after a bit to catch her breath as tears began to stream down the terrified woman's face. She glanced around at the all too large shadows before pulling the coat closer, breathing in the familiar scent as her jade eyes continued sweeping ahead of her as she moved on.

She eventually reached the house she was looking for and the woman beat her hand against it's door several times as she shivered, finally noticing the biting cold on her face.

"Ren! Ehrendil!" She shouted the name with raw fear before she choked back another sob as the door finally opened.

"Merina? What happened to you?"
