A Moment in Time: A Flashback like None Other
It seemed like a normal day for Velruin as he worked behind the bar of the Nook and Cranny inn. He was with two friends and an acquaintance when someone brought up the recent clicker attack. Velruin would listen for a moment before finally speaking up.
"Well, it can't be as bad as when the meteor crashed near Petal Court back in October. I remember that day like anything else."
"What happened on that day Vel?" One of his friends would ask as she sipped on some of her tea.
"It seemed like any other day with Andreas: my first husband. I forgot what we were doing but there was a really loud explosion. I saw him start to run to the source when I asked what the sound was. Being just as curious as him, I chased after him and that's when we saw the meteor. He went up to the meteor to collect samples while I tried to get him away from the damn thing so he didn't die. I remember hearing a loud crack from the rock and that was when Andreas started to run out of the crater. I remember seeing something scratch his ankles before I was impaled. I let out a loud yell that could've been a battle cry. Adrenaline alone got me the rest of the way out of the crater and when I reached the top, I collapsed. I told Andreas to get me a medic and then I blacked out. The rest was really hazy but the one thing that I remember is the fact that I'm not dead yet."
Not even a minute after finishing the story, Velruin would fall into a trance. That trance being the flashback of this story.
"Everything alright Vel?" The same friend would ask.
Nothing came from the Sundial. He'd hold the fabled thousand yard stare as the memory played. The acquaintance would recommend that they either shake Velruin out of the flashback or let it finish naturally. About five minutes later, the Sundial would hold his chest right about where the clicker impaled him and then the flashback would come to an end, allowing him to join the world again.
"Are you okay Vel?" The second friend would ask.
"Yeah. I was just having a thought." Velruin would say as he scratched his neck.
"Don't worry… I get those 'thoughts' some-what often." The acquaintance would happily chime.
"Vel, Amira. Want to go do something?" The same friend would ask.
"We could go to the Old Gods temple and overlook the city. It's a really nice view." Velruin would suggest to the two.
"That sounds like fun. What do you think, Kio?" Amira would ask cheerfully.
"It sounds alright to me. Let's head off." Kio would say with a smile.
From there, the trio would go to the Old Gods temple and they would be joined by two other people. One of the newcomers would say something of the experiments regarding the clickers. Everyone would be on board with the exception of a begrudged Velruin. The group would then go to the science hall and as time went on, they would slowly dwindle. The first to leave would be the Kathar, who had to go check on a few personal things. Kioshi would be the second to leave as she had some business to attend to. The next person would be Velruin since he had a few errands to run. As for the rest of the group, it would be unclear who left and for what reason.
As Velruin walked into his home, he'd get the same flashback from before but it would pick up at the very moment he was impaled. Instead of the stinging sensation he normally gets when having this flashback, he'd feel the pain and it would be nearly identical to when he actually got impaled. Velruin would fall to his knees, hold the exact spot he had been impaled and then start to gasp for air as he then fell onto the floor entirely. Upon impact, the flashback would stop and the pain would linger for a brief moment. He'd take control of his breathing again and then slowly rose to his feet.
"I should've died that day…" He'd wheeze before going to his bedroom.
Upon entering his bedroom, he'd lay on the floor and fall asleep after a few minutes. He'd be plunged into the same flashback and he'd wake up at the very moment he was impaled. He'd fall back asleep only to have the flashback start over. This would happen once more before he finally fell into a deep sleep with an empty dream. From there, Velruin would sleep until the morning sun rose and when it did, he'd get ready to start another day.
"Today will be better than the last."
He'd say to himself before setting off to face the world as usual.
