Harhold and The Angle Veer Coalition
Harhold and The Angle Veer Coalition
The Angle Veer Coalition
At the turn of the year, as 305 AC gave way to 306, war still raged in the far south. The Regalian Empire fought a bloody stalemate with it's southern Neflin rival. Meanwhile, in the Archipelago, Anglia saw the rise of a new prominent family, House Harhold. It seems almost out of thin air that Harhold rose to power, rapidly acquiring Imperial favor and land between Kade controlled Anglia and Dragenthal. Angle Veer saw the growth and rise of new and smaller noble houses among its people over the last few years, and by 306 AC, the isle possessed four major houses; Augustat, Artiemus, Carwell and Claudio.
By January, 306 AC, Harhold made demands to the Anglian Veer noble houses; become a vassal, or face imminent invasion. Augustat and Artiemus sought to work together in ensuring their mutual security, and by mid-January, Artiemus proposed the formation of a coalition, inviting the other houses of the Veer. The Angle Veer Coalition early on was a defence alliance to the threat of Hengest Harhold, known as the Hound of Anglia. To signify their stance, the coalition displayed bilateral functionality of it's naval and army forces, and to voice it's opinion as an entity to be noticed.
The Hound of Anglia
In mid-February of 306 AC, House Du Pont invaded Peirgarten Lands, occupying them to force the hand of surrender. As Du Pont forces moved in from the south near Lorhauser, Harhold forces came to aid their ally from the sea, landing on the northern coast and pillaging the land of it's cattle and food. This terrified the Angle Veer Coalition, on the note that not only could Lorhauser represent a potential reality for Angle Veer, but that House Harhold, already a force to be reckoned with, had a massively powerful ally; House Du Pont.
To prepare for what the coalition saw as an inevitable eventuality, three major steps were taken to strengthen the Angle Veer position. Being an island, Angle Veer could use its naval force as a deterrent. However, it's combined fleet was less than desirable and would crumble under Du Pont. Thankfully for the coalition, the vast majority of Harhold's fleet was to the far south, in the Regalian-Elven War. What ship's Harhold did have, were used to move what forces they possessed to occupy Peirgarten lands. This essentially left no forces to attack the coalition, unless they withdrew from Peirgarten lands. With Du Pont's fleet focused on Lorhauser, their was a realistic chance to take on Harhold at sea. An ally of Artiemus, House Valeur was also to join the coalition through it's navy to control a sea between Valeur lands and Angle Veer known as the Veer Sea. This became known as the Anglo-Valorian Alliance.
Unite or Die
With invasion on the horizon, the Angle Veer Coalition sough to quickly strengthen its position as a way to deter invasion at all cost. This was first done by forming the Anglo-Valorian Alliance, an alliance to maintain naval dominance in the Veer sea between Angle Veer to the North and Valeur lands to the south. Second was House Artiemus conducting naval and military joint training exercises. The Anglo-Valorian Fleet did such in the Veer sea while the coalition drilled it's army around the isle, then to the eastern shores of Angle Veer. As this was done, House Augustat vassalized House Winslough. This would bite back when House Winslough's army arrived on Angle Veer for joint exercises and their undefended home was properly pillaged by another house.
Undoubtedly, the greatest boaster was the plan devised by Augustat and Artiemus to use the Valeur fleet to ferry over Dragenthal refugees who had only prior, been a mob army of some 35,000 strong, to Angle Veer with the promise of protection from religious persecution from Harhold and Du Pont in return for their protection of the Angle Veer Isle, their new home. This was all done in secret, timely so only a week before Harhold arrived on the isle with 15,000 men, only to be completely over run by a force of some 35,000 pagans and 14,000 Anglian Veers. The pagans properly routed the enemy army and captured Hengest Harhold, sending him on a raft back to mainland Anglia filled with severed dog heads. This humiliating defeat of Hengest Harhold, the Hound of Anglia, solidified Angle Veer's stance and granted it recognition through the archipelago as a fearsome, innovative and determined force that was here to stay.

Shifting Power
Shifting Power
Post war Growth
Having survived against all odds, the Angle Veer Coalition came out stronger then ever before. It had entered into existence with 4000 men, and after repelling Harhold, stood at nearly 108,000 Strong, which included Augustat's rising army, the Houses of Artiemus, Carwell and Claudio, and the 35,000 pagans.
All growth wasn't just military, the war still provided a vast market for food production and with control of the Veer sea to its south, and Harhold no longer a major threat, the Coalition refocused its efforts to diplomacy and trade with Daendroquen House Woodenstaff, Ithanian Valeur, and Northerne Viddugla, seeking to even form alliances, though, many falling short as more so non-aggression pacts coupled with trade. The Empire was now stabilized and focused on it's major war abroad.
Augustat Dominance
House Augustat, over the next few months, established itself as the dominate military and political force on Angle Veer, soon forming the other member houses of the Coalition into vassals. This, however, upset the balance and lead to the ending of the Coalition and merging of Artiemus into Valeur, and soon, Valeur into Augustat. The House Augustat came to dominate Angle Veer, however, viewpoints between the more liberal minded Artiemus and Valeur drifted and due to a stagnation of execution of actions and ideas, Artiemus and Valeur broke off of House Augustat, forming House von Brühl and allying themselves with House de Letoirneau.
The Companions Uprising
Amid the rising of old houses in the Veer in the early summer months, House Valdepoort's final heir passed away. The Baron held no next of kin, sending the barony into political quagmire. Luckly for the people and the isle as a whole, the next most powerful family in the land quickly seized and filled the void with little opposition and a bloodless transition of power. The family of Longsae, which translates to a trusted friend, lead a merchant and mercenary company for the barony known as the Companions. The Companions and the Longsae name was one of common knowledge to the other Patriarchs in the Veer, as many in prior decades have hired them for logistical security and efficient delivery of produced food.
It was naturally so that the other houses did not oppose them filling this void, and rather, sought to establish relations with their new brothers, welcoming them into the Second Angle Veer Coalition, organized by Robert Carwell, patriarch of House Carwell, General and war hero of the isle in the Elven War and the defence against Harhold in the first Coalition. House Longsae operates similarly to the other Veer houses in it's military, in that it consist of levy units with many archers and a small core of elite knights.
Hail Angle Veer! Hail Regalia!
Hail Angle Veer! Hail Regalia! The Motto upon which the houses of Angle Veer carry their formation and purpose to. The call for a hailing to the nation, the people and what makes them unique; the people hold a sense of nationalistic pride. The Anglian Veer Council stands as a vanguard to that very way of life, thinking, and values, gaining over the generations through its collection of houses, a sense of patriotic respect and pride for the Isle of Angle Veer. Through their many cultures, they are one on this land, to which they hail their Nation, and hail the Empire.
With this, a Declaration of Identity was proclaimed by House von Brühl, symbolizing the national identity of the people. Angle Veer is home to many, from it's native Anglian Veers, to it's welcomed Dragenthal Refugees, and even it's Ithanian brothers and sisters. Of these, Houses such as House Augustat, House Carwell, House Claudio and House von Brühl, form the face of the people, and their will. They represent a profound sense of national pride and culture with roots deeply embedded into the land and its people, defining Anglian Veer Culture as unique to it's mainland Anglian counterpart. Through this, the many people of Angle Veer see themselves as just that, a singular identity, however different, they are the people of Angle Veer.

Tides of the Synod
Synod influence spreads new roots through the land, as holdings are granted to Reverends. In the Veer, Stephan von Brühl is named High Reverend. As the noble patriarch of House von Brühl and the High Reverend, Stephan gained both a noble holding and a Synod holding. The Synod holding however was not established in Angle Veer, but deep within Hinter Calem, to the far east of the Archipelago, in the holding of Blumenwald. And so, it was decided that the nearby port city and holding of Herbsthafen would become the new capital for House von Brühl. The move to Hinter Calem was undoubtedly a difficult one, with it being so far from the homeland, let alone the cultural difference. House von Brühl, a mix of Anglian Veers and Ithanians, now found itself settled with a Calemburger populist. However, not all was so, for in Herbsthafen, the port city had a rather rich history, and diverse background ripe for Anglian Veer philosophy. As tides change, so does the Synod, and with a change in leadership, the Synod found itself with a new High Reverend, before shortly after, deposing of him as well. One thing was certain, Angle Veer culture now found itself outside of the isle, slowly but surly spreading to new parts of the world.
OOC Info
This was part of an effort to really grasp the history and culture of the isle of Angle Veer. This section is a brief event by event history of this year for Angle Veer, in-game 306 AC. The culture part, talks about Anglian Veer culture, and it's shifting views from Anglian culture, establishing it's own identity while still quite similar.
There may be parts that are numerically incorrect, or historically incorrect. This event listing was done to the best of my ability while keeping it generally simple. Individual sections can be analyzed for later elaboration at a future date. Currently, this and the Anglian Veer Culture page are the main focus. Hope you all enjoy.
