    THEME

Riftan couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned in the bed, sweat beading across his face. It was oily, thick, and heavy. No one was there to calm him, no one except the shadows. Red shadows; red fangs, red eyes, red claws. When his loved ones were not there, his friends went home, and his battle brothers and sisters left to fight their own fights; Riftan was left alone with the shadows, never leaving his side. Like demons, they attached to his soul and slowly drained the life away like a dark poison—the Sanguine. They were never truly there physically, but they were always there in Riftan's mind. It started when he first came to the City, a bright young Knight of Bloodcast that wished to make a difference in a different way. The sword second, words first. Be kind, be brave. He wanted to make the world better, bridge the gaps of peace and bring people together. Riftan was rewarded with pain.

In the name of the Empire did he serve. Riftan turned into a Sanguine because of an ambush, and those memories forever haunt him. The rush that came from feeding, how he attacked people he once loved, how in the moment it brought near-sociopathic joy. "Vampirism just brings out what's inside of you, there's something wrong with you." Sybs said to him afterward, and those words stuck with him ever since. All of that violence was inside of him, and the Sanguine just brought it out. That's not how the story was supposed to go- Riftan was a Knight, meant to protect the people. To save them, to help them. Not be a murderer, a warrior of bloodlust. Yet, there did his friends say he was. Cheering as Riftan was beaten by Calibur in the Arena Court, even his fellow Knights such as Sera Avael. Where was the fairy tale? When the Knight in shining armor saved those he loved, and was embraced as a hero? There were no songs sung for Riftan. For rather than bright-silver armor did Riftan don black. He always walked in darkness, and he just never realized it.

Riftan got up. It was early in the morning, but no light shone through the Vaedra Estate as he moved to the mirror which beset itself adjacent to his bed. Covered in sweat, Riftan tried to wash his face; yet in the mirror, he saw that same pair of red eyes over his shoulder. "You're an outcast. They don't care for you. You're a terrible Knight. You failed everyone." He slipped into his armor then, each gold and black-plated piece fitting him perfectly. Like he was born to wear it.

The lone Afflicted traverses the road, passing the Crookback Graveyard to walk upon the bridge. The last time Riftan was here, he was a Sanguine- hunting two lone travelers to feast. Now, Riftan donned the Knightly colors of the Bloodcast Order. He drew his sword, the audible -SHINK- of the black steel as it screamed against the sheath. Afterward, the Knight charged forth- and what swayed in the wind was the crimson cloak of Riftan's armor.

Was it all in his head? The thoughts that he was a bad Knight, that he was an outcast. Riftan didn't know, and perhaps he didn't care anymore.

    Thanks for reading! >:)

The Bloodcast Order got reworked to be more protective of the common people, which sort of plays into the ongoing threads for Riftan. Though, as all things, Riftan is a constantly developing character!
