Xanthippe's beliefs are largely agnostic, but the faith of Estel is the only religion that they've benefited from learning from. He has grown up in the world of Unionism, being born in Regalia, and in his later years took up some of the practices of Spirit Sorcery. ⋞ 〈 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━〉 ⋟ ○ (0-12). ▻ Xanthippe was laid in the slums of Regalia on November 14, year 272AC. The clutch was found by an elderly Kathar woman named Lutha in extremely poor condition. They were left in the back of an abandoned house, covered haphazardly in plant matter while their recently deceased father lay next to them. While the eggs were cared for to the best of his ability, it was clear that the Ka-Maraya had died of starvation. ▻ Though they knew next to nothing about Maraya, Lutha took the eggs in using what spare materials were left in the squatter’s house. They were fairly large, but Xanthippe’s egg was slightly indented at the side. For this reason, Lutha was inclined to care for it more closely. In turn, the other ailing eggs never hatched. In the following days, Xanthippe emerged a runt with their left eye significantly smaller than the right one. ▻ Growing up in the disease-prone back-end of Regalia, Xanthippe took an early interest in everything that would promise good health. Already a welp of a child, Lutha taught the child to take special care of their well-being. Frequent trips to charity clinics were a staple of the young Maraya’s childhood, though nothing could change the state of their eye. Instead, twelve-year-old Xanthippe studied under the local medicine men as a volunteer, and later an apprentice. ○ (12-18). ▻ Lutha remained day-laborer moving crates at the docks for next to nothing. Still, they managed enough to scrape by and provide for the two. Living became easier when Lutha’s older brother Tacitus moved in after his wife’s untimely death. He was a bookmaker, bringing in money by facilitating a few of the gambling rings in the area. ▻ Lutha and Tacitus belatedly tried to instill their religious beliefs in Xanthippe. Void Worship never appealed to the Xan, who was inclined to believe whatever was easiest. Unionism and Estel seemed to be the most widely accepted, and they found the darkness of the Void Prefects much too intimidating. Lutha and Tacitus didn't push much thereafter, agreeing that it might be unnatural for a Ka-Maraya raised in Regalia to agree strongly with the Kathar faith. ▻ Xanthippe rebelled further by setting out to learn more about their own culture. Even though they were disappointed to find how scattered Maraya teachings are, Xanthippe was pleased to begin studying Shalota. This caused more strain on their relationship with their kin, however. The disconnect led to infighting until they came to the mutual understanding that learning about Maraya history was their birthright. ▻ When Xanthippe developed applicable skills, their apprenticeship became paid. Xan could afford the materials to take up needlework and alchemy, and often visited the library during their spare time. At night Xanthippe tested various potions at the behest of their uncle and mother. The budding alchemist took a liking to creating volatile gasses as a form of self-defense. While weapons were never their strong suit, throwing anything that could do damage became an easy stress reliever for Xan. They enjoyed the smashing of bottles against targets set up in the back yard, often filling the concotions with colorful effects and experimental scents. ○ (20-present day). ▻ Moving into adulthood, Xanthippe devoted more time to their work. Their mother was able to retire, and Tacitus got lucky cashing out on a horse racing bet. This added quality of life inspired Xanthippe to do more charity work, marking a time where they focused less on their studies and more on helping the weak and needy. At home, Xan spent more time with their mother. The bond between them deepened, and Xanthippe learned a great deal about needlework from her. ▻ In Xanthippe’s late twenties, Tacitus became more involved with shadier gambling rings. Tacitus backed out of a hefty bet with a well-known thug. Tacitus dodged his threats until the offenders paid their family home a visit. After taking a score from the house, they proceeded to beat him to a pulp in front of Xanthippe and Lutha. Carelessly, they struck him with injuries that were too fatal for the older Kathar to endure. Outside, they poured liquor on the homestead and set fire to it. Lutha had been knocked unconscious by the smoke, and Xanthippe failed to treat Tacitus by himself. ▻ Still, the thugs returned a week later to the ruined house and were relentless in insisting that the next of kin would pay off his debt or suffer the same fate. The family’s combined savings were only enough to pay off half of the debt. Xan negotiated a deal where they would serve the gamblers so that Lutha wouldn’t have to make any sacrifices. During this time, all of Xanthippe’s clinic salaries went to the gamblers. ▻ Xanthippe took up pick-pocketing and pawning off stolen goods. Aside from pawnable items, they would steal alchemical ingredients. When they had time, they made concoctions that earned a fair amount of coin. Lutha returned to day-labor, needing to return their home to liveable conditions. ▻ Xanthippe spent years paying them off, but this gritty lifestyle took a toll. Once they were out of debt with their home repaired, Xanthippe and Lutha had next to nothing of their own. In later years, Xanthippe frequented priests of Estel. They offered her scraps of food to take home if they spent enough time listening to their beliefs. In time, they grew close to one of the priests and began learning Lightness Sorcery. Xanthippe clung to the thought that, had they known this sooner, they would have been able to save their uncle. ▻ Xanthippe promised Lutha that they would live comfortably again. Presently, they spend their days thinking of ways to bring them to wealth. Xan is willing to go to any extent to do so, as any moral compass they had in the past slowly fades away. Here is my review: For your religion, can you add a X/10 rating for their faith? This may help staff members down the line if this character gets involved in any progressions or events.
