Shortly after birth, Ashera abandoned the child with her father, unwilling to take on such a great responsibility at the time. ★ Growing up in a poverty-stricken district of the city in a shabby apartment, Josephina had a relatively short childhood. In order to help her father pay for rent and food for the two of them, the child would scam random passersby on the street, so that her father could rob them of their loose regals. ★ Around the age of thirteen, Josephina began searching for work around the city. She was met with prejudice, however, due to her Kathar heritage. It wasn’t until-- at a tavern near the harbor-- she spotted a notice about a man looking for deckhands. The Captain was at first, skeptical of the young Halfling, but she persisted, promising to the captain that she would prove her worth. With some consideration, the captain ultimately accepted her into his crew. ★ The crew-- like the captain when he met Josephina-- were also critical of the Halfling, feeling a girl as young as she was would not be fit for the rigorous tasks of a deckhand. Josephina would start off by doing small errands for the crew, such as fitting into tight spaces for them or helping with small ship repairs. As she grew, the work became more labour intensive. Becoming closer to the crew and its captain, she was given the opportunity to learn Common, albeit from people with little education on the language themselves. Chapter II ★ After working with the crew for almost fifteen years, the captain had no more use for her, letting her off along with a few other crew members. With sailing being pretty much the only thing the Halfling was proficient at, she opted to look for another crew to enlist in. She eventually stumbled upon a pirate crew, preparing to leave the harbor. Convincing them that she’d be a perfect fit for the crew, they accepted her in. ★ Josephina was unaware of the crew’s lack of care for her wellbeing, and was subjected to even harsher treatment from the deckhands and the captain himself. Nevertheless, the Halfling would not let this crush her spirits, determined to make this occupation work for her. She did anything she could to prove her worth, eventually earning her place in the crew. ★ Once she was trained in combat by the pirate, Josephina participated in her first ship raid: A small merchant ship. Unable to fight back, the merchants easily surrendered once the pirates boarded. The crew had a successful set of raids throughout the years-- that is, until they raided the wrong ship. ★ Spotting a Regalian Naval ship off in the distance, the crew thought it was the right idea to plunder it. They thought wrong. Their ship was in shambles by the time they were close enough, the Naval ship obliterating half the crew with their superior firepower. The crew was forced to retreat with their tails between their legs. Though beaten, the Naval ship pursued the crew, continuing to rain fire on the already vulnerable ship. Josephina was forced to abandon ship, swimming off to a nearby island. ★ The island was uninhabited. Josephina was on her own. The Halfling was forced to live off the land, hunting and killing any animal that crossed her path for food. After about a month on the island, a merchant ship happened to be sailing in the vicinity of her. She found a way to signal for the boat, and was finally rescued. It wasn’t long before she was dropped off on another island-- the Crown Isle.
