Descending from the warrior dragon Songalay, Ibra’s family was zealously proud of their lineage. Their parents both had an extensive military career, having trained in the prestigious School of Melaak and serving in the infantry. From an early age, Ibrahima was taught to be a warrior, training in spear combat from the age of six up until adulthood. Ibra’s parents also heavily stressed the importance of taking care of one’s body, drilling them in nutrition and fitness. Unlike most Songaskian parents, they rarely allowed Ibra to eat desserts, a rule that produced bemused looks at restaurants and dinner parties. However, because of their obligations to the military, namely their service in the First and Second Songaskian Wars, the Camaras spent less time with their child than the average Songaskian, and Ibra was mostly raised by their paternal grandparents. The Camara elders ignored their son and daughter-in-law’s strict guidelines, feeding Ibra dish upon dish of savory and sweet junk foods. Eventually, when Ibra was old enough to help around the kitchen, their grandmother showed them how to cook and bake. She taught them how to prepare traditional Songaskian treats such as meat pies and Sfenj doughnuts and snuck recipe books into their room when their parents weren’t looking, inspiring a love of cooking in Ibra from an early age. A former hoofer, she also taught Ibra traditional Songaskian dances when they weren’t in school or practicing martial arts. Ibra’s grandfather, a musician, was initially hesitant to pass on his musical knowledge to their grandchild, but after months of nagging, he began teaching how to sing and play the kora, a 21-string lute. Upon reaching adolescence, Ibrahima also received more abstract lessons from their grandparents. After a formative experience in their early teens, Ibrahima gained a deeper understanding of their heritage. Following a physical altercation with another student in their martial arts class, Ibra’s grandparents lectured them on how Songalay was a lover as well as a fierce warrior and to not mistake senseless violence with strength. They also instructed Ibra to embrace their naturally androgynous features, as these characteristics were the mark of their lineage. It was around this time that Ibra’s parents, having returned from the Second Songaskian War, began to spend more time with their child. Ibrahima’s grandparents moved away from the city to retire in the countryside and Ibra began seeing them less often, visiting them every other weekend as opposed to living with them. Having little in common with their parents, Ibra got away from the house by working part-time in restaurants and shutting themselves in their room. In their alone time, they also started experimenting with their gender expression and general appearance, shaving their hair to mimic high-status Songaskian women and frequently inviting an artist friend over to show them how to use Tawhroon, traditional Songaskian body paint, to enhance their features. The Camaras, though accepting of these changes, were at a loss for how to parent their now free-spirited and sugar-loving child. Ibra had grown into a completely different person than they had envisioned and the three often butt heads. Eventually, once they reached adulthood, Ibra started learning how to bartend and began earning a decent wage as a cook. Given that Ibra could now live on their own, the family mutually decided that it was time for Ibra to leave home and explore the world. After receiving a letter from a distant cousin asking them to visit them in the Holy City, Ibrahima packed their bags and set off for Regalia, not realizing that they would soon fall in love with the place and eventually choose to live and pursue a culinary career there.
