Yes, this is the second time I've posted under Suggestions/Complaints this week but since no one else seems to be bothered to talk about this, I figure I should.

As most of you know, we recently extended the player cap to 175, from 150. This is great, it means more people can log on the servers, thus more new players will play, get premium, and help the server.

The problem is, during heavy traffic hours (when the server is full) the TPS is near 10. This is still alright TPS but it can make pvp very challenging, where as before we could have 150 people with 20 TPS. More people should be able tp play Massive at once, but not if that costs us our 20 TPS, at least not until Server sharding is complete.

So yes, my suggestion is that the cap be moved back to 150, with hopes of extending it in the future, when we can still mantain 20 TPS.

Just to make it clear, I love the team for working so hard on the server, this is just some constructive criticism.

Cheers.

A few things:
1) This only happens for about 4 to 6 hours on weekdays.
2) The reason why the cap was extended was because of all the complaints about the slots...I don't think many people would want slots reduced.
3) 10 TPS? You say that's bad TPS for PvP? Others and I have had PvP fun, raids, and we even went on a Super Breaker mining spree with only 5 TPS.

I agree. We should work towards being able to have more players on the server at once, but not if the cost is the quality of general gameplay. Although I don't think it's likely that the cap will be returned to 150, I do think it's something that should be done.

Edit: I feel like we should have maintained the higher TPS that we had not too long ago, and waited until the sharding is done before actually raising the player cap. Unless the sharding isn't expected to be done for several more months.

10 TPS in PVP will count: There is a slight jarring effect on other players and as an Archer (or any other type of fighter) it can cost you. And those "4 to 6 hours" are when I (and many others) usually play, not all of us can get on all the time. I'm simply offering a temporary solution, until server sharding is done.

Not only 10 tps, I have witnessed getting to low as 2.648 tps! I think this should be reduced till server sharding is fixed.

The thing is we don't know when server sharding would be done, and if we lower the cap it would be even harder for ordinary players to get on.

10 TPS!? You're complaining about 10 TPS!? Dude! For Months on end it was at 2-3 TPS every hour of every DAY! Be thankful its even at 10 TPS!

Lol does anyone remember that day it went to 0.0 TPS?

10 TPS is good. I don't see why to complain. Plus I like the server being at 175, means more new people can log in. Maybe there's a little bit of lag, but compared to what we've dealt with for the past month, 10 TPS is great. :)

Exactly. I always had 2 to 4 TPS on a weekday at peak hours. I could barely build, much lees mine. It became so laggy, I even gave up on PvP.

10 TPS doesn't interfere with PvP. Most people can fight through that, it doesn't matter.

TPS has never affected me, but that's just because compared to my ping it has little to no effect. Lowering the player cap always causes problems, the server is still full in peak hours with the added 25 slots, if we reduce it over 30 people will be locked out of the server at a time, and that doesn't seem very... fair...

I would rather it be at 150, at least until the sharding is gone. I do notice times when the chat is behind 10 whole seconds. I also notice that the tps is about half of what it should be. I don't care if less people can get on. Not at the cost of the game play quality. Let's go back to 150 until server sharding is complete.

Let me clear up what lag is. I'm not patronising you, but it's important to know.

Ping = The main source of lag, specifically for people who don't live in the US, ping is how long it takes for information (packets) to reach the server. If you have 10 second ping, it will take you 10 seconds for chat messages to show up. This is completely YOUR internet. The server can do nothing to lower your ping, aside from moving to your area.

TPS = Ticks per second, this is how many times the server updates everything. If the server has 20 TPS, player positions on your screen will be updated 20 times each second. TPS is SERVER SIDED, it is the same for everyone.

Symptoms of bad tps: Players jumping around, blocks reappearing after you break them.

Symptoms of bad ping time: Chat messages and commands taking a long time to activate, players not taking damage when you hit them.

All seems fine, as the others have said 10 tips is great, much better than 2 months ago when it was 2tps, I can finally lure animals into pens again ^_^

I'm still not sure which people complain louder, the ones saying the server is impossible to join for about 12 hours, or the people saying the server has become intolerable laggy with the drop of 2~3 tps.

A saying: "You can't please everybody."

Like Marty said, the crowd that wanted to have more people on the server was battling the crowd that whine about lag. And like Illo said, most of the people that complain about lag don't even know what it is. It's most likely their ping or FPS.

I guess in the end, the crowd that wanted more player slots won out against the people that disliked more lag. That's why Cayorion added more.

I get bad both when the server is full >.> I realize they're different, but I've never had one be good and the other bad... I generally blame my wireless connection because wireless is crap. Even though a wireless user may have great bandwidth, which 'should' result in good pings, their connection might have a lot of lost packets, resulting in them having to be resent. Which means even if the TPS is high, you'll still be behind on all the TPS related things as they weren't kept up to date in time on your side. (Just adding on to what you said, I guess)

Which, the server being full is probably just coincidence, because the time the server is full is probably also the same time a lot of things are going on around the house that my interfere with my wireless connection.

Firstly, I do apologize if it sounds like I'm whining, I am simply stating what I think would be best for the server. Yes, 10 TPS is much better then before but it is not as good as it could be, and the occasional bit of TPS lag (server side, not my side) can impact pvp. Nothing huge, but to me at least, it's worth lowering the player cap. And indeed, you can't please everyone, if the amount of people "whining" for a higher player cap is more then the amount of people "whining" to lower it, then keep the player cap as is. I disagree with it, but then again, I disagree with most people most of the time :P

Ready to be locked, if no one else has anything they wish to bring up.

Sidenote- Thank you for explaining what Ping and TPS are Illo, twas rather helpful.

I was under the impression that the big jump to 20 tps was because of the server sharding project. But everyone keeps saying it hasn't been finished. Why did the Tps jump then?

Also The team made the best choice in the given situation. This server still maxes out which is a major accomplishment for any server. I have faith that the team that made a server this popular knows what's best for the server.

Server sharding was being implemented as it was completed. At least, that's what I think.

I don't think server sharding has been done yet. About two months ago I asked Tom - He said it could take up to a year.

Apparently the lag was fixed by 3 plugins which were causing trouble.

Often isp's offer different services at "peak" and non "peak" hours. When the server is full, that's peak hours.
