    Life Story

Damian was born to Deacon and Virginia Teach in the small coastal town of Darby, New Ceardia. Deacon was the first mate aboard The Black Bounty, a vessel in the Imperial Navy. While his father and his brother Devante, who also worked aboard the Bounty, Damian spent his childhood exploring the mountains that backed the village and swimming out on the shore the ran along the other side of Darby. He joined the navy as soon he had reached of age, being designated to The Black Bounty. Devante taught him what all the men did aboard the ship and the basic understanding of how to get a ship to sail. As he grew up, he was trained how to wield a cutlass by a wizened quartermaster aboard the Bounty. Time on The Black Bounty past quickly, the crew not seeing much action except from the merchants avoiding tariffs that occurred everyone and awhile.

Two years since joining the Imperial Navy, Damian was assigned as the helmsman of the ship. He became an well voiced member of the crew. The sailors and him spent their nights in the hull socializing. The sun shined overhead with sweat beading off his brow. They were off in the Yellow Sea, and the heat was rising significantly. Land had left view hours past. Spirits were high as they continued their route back to New Ceardia. He noticed Devante sparring with the wizened quartermaster, the sailors forming a ring around the pair. He watched from the wheel, the crew’s attention on the duel. Devante had knocked the quartermaster into a corner. Damian turned his attention over to the sea, noticing a schooner along the horizon. He called out to his father and the captain signalling them to the incoming ship. Their black sails advanced as the crew hastily prepared. The battle seemed swift, their crew jumping aboard the Bounty. The Imperial sailors were swiftly slaughtered. Only a quarter of their crew remained when Damian reached his father. The captain’s blood was splattered on Deacon’s coat, making him the captain. Another pirate ran towards them. Damian hastily attempted to parry, but the pirate’s pure force knocked the blade from his hand, and another swing chopped his left hand off. His father gathered the pirates attention to draw him away from him. Damian looked around, bursting in panic. Devante was with two other sailors near the aft, while the quartermaster was instantly surrounded by the pirates near an cannon. The quartermaster knew that he wouldn't survive, for he threw a nearby lantern into the stockpiled gunpowder. The deck was torn to pieces, the quartermaster and pirates were blown overboard, the sea turning red. Damian gaped at the gore, when suddenly a pirate tackled into him. His feet fell from under him as the two tossed over the railings. Water splashed over his face as he sunk deeper into the sea.

The sun shined in his eyes as he attempted to rise from the wooden floor. An iron anklet chafed his leg as he got into a sitting position. Men in dark clothes were working on the deck of the ship. Damian first thought they were the pirates who attacked the Bounty, but he noticed that the ship was entirely different. He asked a passing sailor where he was. The smuggler replied, The Merry Mason.

The smugglers told him that they had fished him out of the sea. The Black Bounty was lost to the sea, his brother and father probably with it. While he was kept in chains, the crew treated him fairly. He was well fed and allowed to walk the deck at times, but he still felt weak from the shock of his left hand being chopped off. It was midday about a week later when the pirates who attacked the Bounty fell upon the smugglers’ ship. The smugglers were able to keep them from boarding. Damian was released from his bounds and ordered to man an cannon if he wished to not meet the same fate his family did. The battle was drawing to a stalemate, with only minor holes in the hull. The situation was grim until an Imperial ship sailed into view. The smugglers cheered, thinking the Regalians would surely save them. No one thought that they would run away from the criminals, but that was exactly what happened. The Imperial ship fled the pirates leaving them to fend for themselves. The pirates went to ram the Mason, the smugglers fire multiple holes into their hull. The pirates jumped aboard, their own ship beginning to sink. Damian was astonished with how the Imperial sailors had fled, but was drawn back into the battle as a smuggler fell dead before him. A pirate charged towards him. He hastily grabbed the corpse’s cutlass and parried his attack. Damian met his eyes, seeing he was one from the prior attack. With a fury he strengthen his attacks, running his blade through the pirate. The pirate still stood, elbowing him in the chest. He fell his cutlass falling from his grasp. The pirate was nearing. He reached for a weapon, anything would do. He panic as his fingers wrapped around a large hook used for carry shipments. The pirate jumped on top of him, Damian slashing the hook into the pirate’s throat. His clothes were covered in blood, his clammy cold hand still holding the hook. He tossed the pirate corpse of his chest as he went to stand. By then the pirates were mostly killed off, with only a few smugglers dead.

Damian never went back to the navy. All faith in the Empire, or at least it’s current leaders, was gone. He had joined the crew of The Merry Mason, gladly accepted thanks to his assistance with the skirmish with the pirates. Damian fell heavily into drinking, having difficulty coping with the death of Devante, Deacon, and his friends who were aboard the Bounty. He also grew fond of spending nights with woman found in taverns whenever they make dock. He found it difficult to have any true feelings for any true woman, afraid that he would be unable to protect her from harm.

The Merry Mason endured multiple skirmishes with pirates, Damian becoming skilled in combat. His left hand now replaced with the hook from the last skirmish. They didn't involve themselves with pirating, but limited themselves to smuggling. Less attention came from smuggling than most other acts happening off in sea. As the years went by, he became more accepted by the crew. Eventually he became the first mate.

The aging captain recently passed from ammonia during a particularly bad storm. Damian, now captain of The Merry Mason, lead the crew to even larger profits as he started to take on larger shipments. Time went by, yet the memory of the battle aboard the Bounty still haunted him. He thought of returning to Darby, to check on his mother, but he couldn't face her and explain why he had survived when so many others didn't. However when they sailed past Darby, the town visible from the deck, he turned sails towards his coastal hometown. His mother’s reaction was a teary one at best. His younger siblings were now living their lives as honest citizens. Seeing that his family was living a happy life rid him of the guilt of the Bounty. He is trying to improve to honor his father’s memory, now in Regalia looking for more honest work. Damian still possess some of his more roguish attributes though, The Merry Mason and crew made their way to Regalia seeking out new opportunities.

In Regalia, Damian first got a job working for Cassius Paloin as an transporter for his growing trade empire. However, with Cassius heading into war, business got slow and Damian was forced to find other employment. He was employed into the service of the Noble Christopher Black. Now a Captain in his navy, he spends his evenings protecting Black and his kin.
